Mr. Hughes, the only son of Reverend ond Mrs. John A. Hughes, wos born on March 8, 1898, in Newcostle-on-Tyne, England. At the oge of twelve, Mr. Hughes, his sister Gwen, and his another came to Grand Meadow, Minnesota, to meet Reverend Hughes, who hod arrived a year earlier. Mr. Hughes lived in Grand Meadow until he was graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1915. Attend ing Carleton College, he majored in biology, participated in debate and football, and was graduated in 1919. His teaching positions have been many. He taught biology at Tracey, Minnesota, Carleton College, and Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault. On July 22, 1922, he married Helen Allison Hutchings. The couple moved to Willow Lake, South Oakota, where he taught, coached football,'and was super- intendent. In 1925, following his superintendency at Russell, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes moved to Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, where Mr. Hughes taught English and chemistry and was once ogain superintendent. His numerous activities at Red Lake Falls also included coaching football, debate, speech, and school plays. In 1929, their only child Jean was born. After attending summer classes at the University of Minnesota, Mr. Hughes received his Master of Arts degree in 1940. Ten years later, he came to Forest Lake High School as superintendent. Mr. Hughes civic activities have been numerous: president and vice-president of the Lion's Club; Past Commander, State Orator, and Chaplain of the Masons, Post Commander of the American Legion; member of the Chamber of Commerce; member of the Washington County Draft Board; and past chairman of o committee branching from the Minnesota State Board of Education. Many people consider him to be the brightest and best informed superintendent in public education in Minnesota. His services as teacher, administrator, and public servant hove shown oil of us that this is a man who has devoted a lifetime to making this a better world in which tomorrow's youth may grapple with life's incessant problems.

One of Mr. Hughes's more pleasant duties was breaking ground for the new addition to the high school in I960. 'Mr. Hughes studies blueprints of the new junior high. Much of Mr. Hughes's time is spent in his office coping with the problems of the school district.
