“FOREWORD This year the world has seen a change in several of the world powers. Khrushchev was removed from power; Harold Wilson of the Labor Party became Prime Minister of En- gland; and Johnson and Humphrey won the presidential election in the United States. Another change has seen the Red Chinese emerge as a nuclear power. In Rome, the Ecumenical Council has met with the purpose of creating friendship between world reli- gions. This past summer has seen the World's Fair in New York City. And last fall, in Tokyo, Japan, the Olympics were held, with the United States capturing thirty-six out of a possible one hundred sixty-three gold med- als. On the national scene, the Yankees were finally defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. This past fall, Dora, Esther, Hilda, and Isbell, four major hurricanes, hit the southeastern part of the United States, leaving people homeless and causing severe damage along the coastal area. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his efforts to promote peace, became the first Negro in history to win a Nobel Prize. At home, Uncle Sam called Tony Oliva, who this year took the batting crown, and became rookie of the year in the American League. Hubert Humphrey was chosen as Vice-Presidential candidate by President Johnson and later became Vice-President of the United States. Locally, the new junior high has begun to rise from a sketch on papers to a modern school building.
