FOREWORD This year the world has seen a change in several of the world powers. Khrushchev was removed from power; Harold Wilson of the Labor Party became Prime Minister of En- gland; and Johnson and Humphrey won the presidential election in the United States. Another change has seen the Red Chinese emerge as a nuclear power. In Rome, the Ecumenical Council has met with the purpose of creating friendship between world reli- gions. This past summer has seen the World's Fair in New York City. And last fall, in Tokyo, Japan, the Olympics were held, with the United States capturing thirty-six out of a possible one hundred sixty-three gold med- als. On the national scene, the Yankees were finally defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. This past fall, Dora, Esther, Hilda, and Isbell, four major hurricanes, hit the southeastern part of the United States, leaving people homeless and causing severe damage along the coastal area. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his efforts to promote peace, became the first Negro in history to win a Nobel Prize. At home, Uncle Sam called Tony Oliva, who this year took the batting crown, and became rookie of the year in the American League. Hubert Humphrey was chosen as Vice-Presidential candidate by President Johnson and later became Vice-President of the United States. Locally, the new junior high has begun to rise from a sketch on papers to a modern school building. Hughes, wos born on March 8, 1898, in Newcostle-on-Tyne, England. At the oge of twelve, Mr. Hughes, his sister Gwen, and his another came to Grand Meadow, Minnesota, to meet Reverend Hughes, who hod arrived a year earlier. Mr. Hughes lived in Grand Meadow until he was graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1915. Attend ing Carleton College, he majored in biology, participated in debate and football, and was graduated in 1919. His teaching positions have been many. He taught biology at Tracey, Minnesota, Carleton College, and Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault. On July 22, 1922, he married Helen Allison Hutchings. The couple moved to Willow Lake, South Oakota, where he taught, coached football,'and was super- intendent. In 1925, following his superintendency at Russell, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes moved to Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, where Mr. Hughes taught English and chemistry and was once ogain superintendent. His numerous activities at Red Lake Falls also included coaching football, debate, speech, and school plays. In 1929, their only child Jean was born. After attending summer classes at the University of Minnesota, Mr. Hughes received his Master of Arts degree in 1940. Ten years later, he came to Forest Lake High School as superintendent. Mr. Hughes civic activities have been numerous: president and vice-president of the Lion's Club; Past Commander, State Orator, and Chaplain of the Masons, Post Commander of the American Legion; member of the Chamber of Commerce; member of the Washington County Draft Board; and past chairman of o committee branching from the Minnesota State Board of Education. Many people consider him to be the brightest and best informed superintendent in public education in Minnesota. His services as teacher, administrator, and public servant hove shown oil of us that this is a man who has devoted a lifetime to making this a better world in which tomorrow's youth may grapple with life's incessant problems. One of Mr. Hughes's more pleasant duties was breaking ground for the new addition to the high school in I960. 'Mr. Hughes studies blueprints of the new junior high. Much of Mr. Hughes's time is spent in his office coping with the problems of the school district. J. A. The algebra class studies the basic fundamentals which will help them in working out formulas and equations. Penny Yale and Bernard Larson display the pyramid models which were made by the plane geometry classes. Accurate measurements assure good results in home ec. cooking classes. One third of the year is spent studying cleanliness and child care in discussions such as this in Mrs. Sandager's 8th grade class. To mark a hem evenly all Sheila Johnson needs is a hem marker and a friendly hand from Suzanne Timm. 32 Doroce Dupont practices on the adding machine during her course in office practices. Donna Deskins, Sandy Johnson, and John Thorp, practice the correct use of office machines. In the beginning typing class, students are taught the typewriter keyboard and basic principles of letters and problem setup. Dan Hair and Terry Husnik cut strips of sheet metal for their shop projects. Junior high boys can make anything from a wallet to a coin purse in leather shop. Forest Lake secured first place in the district meet with a near perfect score of 16. Dave DeLong, who was the outstanding run- ner of the team, came in first in the district meet. FOOTBALL The 1964 football squad racked up only 3 wins, while losing 6. After losing the season's opener to Brooklyn Center because of fumbleitis, the Rangers were still optimistic about their forthcoming games after trouncing Chisago City 47-0. Their hopes were short- lived, however, for Coach Stan Peterson's gridders were plagued with injuries. One of the biggest losses was lineman Jim Sederholm. Although it tallied as a loss, one of the highlights of the season was Forest Lake's performance against the Osseo Orioles. Coach Peterson's superb engineering, coupled with his boys' great determination, made this one of the finest games of the season. To reward his hard-nose, football-bulldozing, Pat Casey was selected as an All-Conference defensive end, while a trio of players, Dana Johnson, Bill Franta, and Darrel Severson, received All-Con- ference Honorable Mentions. Pat Morley, next year's captain, will be minus the efforts of nine graduationg seniors. Brooklyn Center . . An elbow here, an elbow there BASKETBALL Under the leadership of capable Coach Conley, the FL cagers came through the season with an 18-4 record. Going 11 for 3 in the Skyline Conference, Conley's cagers took second place to Spring Lake Park. Darrel Severson, top scorer for the Rangers, ranked fourth in the conference. Co-captains Dave Conley and Darrel Sever- son were both voted All-Conference players, with Dave Sandberg and Greg Benson receiving honorable mentions. On March 12, at North Branch, the Rangers won their second con- secutive District 25 title by bombing the Barnum Bombers 75-50. Earlier the Rangers catapulted Pine City, squeaked by the ever- dangerous Chisago City Indians, and outlated undefeated Moose Lake. Darrel Severson, Tom Gay and Greg Benson were named to the All-District squad after the Barnum game at Cambridge. This year's Rangers performed the spectacular by spilling the proverbial apples from the carts of four supposedly undefeated teams: Faribault, North Branch, Spring Lake Park, and Moose Lake. The highlight of the season was probably felt by players and fans alike when the mighty Rangers vexed (and hexed?) the North Branch Vikings before a standing-room-only crowd. Friday, March 19, Forest Lake met the powerful Virginia team at the University of Duluth fieldhouse. Virginia defeated For- est Lake 47-45. A 25-foot desperation shot with only 2 seconds remain- ing ended the Ranger's state bid, and left one half of the stadium stunned, sulky, and sad. “Oh! Gosh! Where did the basket go? WRESTLING 1965 was a remarkable year for wrestling at F.L.H.S. It marked the first time that a regional tournament was ever held at Forest Lake. On Saturday, February 27, wrestlers unveiled the colors of their respective schools, and fans crowded the doors long be- fore they were scheduled to open. The tournament began at 11:00 a.m. and, except for a brief break for meals, continued with an enthusiastic crowd until 10:30 p.m. Al- though Grand Rapids won the tournament, Forest Lake capped third place and did very well for itself by placing Bob Westby and Bruce Saxe into state competition, with Mike Niemczyk narrowly missing the chance to make it a threesome. In the State Tour- nament Bruce Saxe was defeated in the first round, but co-captain Westby placed fifth. Although the Rangers placed second to North Branch, Coaches Matteson and Reiman boasted four district champions in Arnie Dunn (95 ), Gordy LaCasse (103 ), Bob Westby (112 ), and Mike Niemczyk (120 ). Conference champions this year were co-captains Westby (103 ). and Niemczyk (120 ). Junior high boys practice long and hard. WY Ranger Bob Westby grapples with his Brook- lyn Center opponent. Bob took the Confer- ence championship in the 103 class. Arnie Dunn was the Forest Lake Invitational champion in the 95 class. He had a record of 4-3. 77 F. L GOLF TEAM From loft to right: Jim Sederholm, Pot Morley, Jeff Houle, Barton Johnson, Greg Linnell, Tom Wegleitner. Medalist Jim Sederholm receives commendation from Coach Ny- man. This season the golf team, coached by George Nyman, had an outstand- ing record of seven wins, one loss and one tie. In the Skyline Conference Tournament they placed second to Mahtomedi. Jim Sederholm was the medalist with a score of 78. Forest Lake also placed second in the District 25 Tournament. North Branch, who placed first, went on to win the state championship. Pat AAorley and Jeff Houle qualified for the Regional Tournament at Virginia, but were defeated. Pat Morley and Mr. Nyman discuss Pat's possibilities of a win at the Region Tournament. 78 F. Second row: Coach Johnson, John Preiner, Rick Sandstrom, Bob Thurnbeck, Bill Fenton, Myron Fladland, Bob Anderson, Phil Edstrom, Jerry Larson. The FL tennis team had a very successful year, going undefeated in conference play. Coach Johnson and his seven netters added two trophies to the trophy case by winning the conference title and by narrowly edging out St. Paul Park 26-25 in the Skyline Conference Tennis Tournament at Brooklyn Center. In the Skyline Conference Tournament, Myron Fladland easily fought his way to winning the singles title, a title which he has now earned for three consecutive years. Phil Edstrom placed third in singles play, and his great second effort gave Forest Lake the one necessary point to win the tournament. Also doing a splendid job for Forest Lake were the doubles teams of Fenton-Anderson, Thurnbeck-Preiner, whose stamina in long games got them to the semi-finals, both losing to St. Paul Park in three sets. The tennis team failed to win a match in Region VII play, with Dennis Chez of Hibbing winning the singles event and placing second in the State. If he leans over the net once more. Coached by John Schumacher, Forest Lake's thinclads finished the 1964 season by placing fifth in the district competitions, fifth in the conference meet, and fifth in the conference relay meet. Darrel Severson had his second triumphant season as a high jumper. Darrel placed first in the three conference meets and in the non-conference meet with St. Croix Falls. He set a new high jumping record of 5'11 Vi in the Skyline Conference meet. Dave DeLong, Jim Osland, Wayne Skoglund, and Tim Glenn, members of the half mile relay team, also did a creditable job —winning in two of the con- ference meets. In the region, they were defeated by Ely, who went on to the finals and placed fifth in the state.
