MIRROR MCMLXVIII FOREST LAKE ACADEMY VOL. XLIII EDITOR - DEDE PICHLER ASST. EDITOR-JOE FAUGHN LAYOUT EDITOR - DON KRILL ADVISOR MR. ANDERSON The eternal process of life surges on The child totters . . . The child runs . . . While we anticipate with fearful hearts. Time is Time wa Now is the accepted time 6 we live. We hesitate a moment to develop our minds . . . “To every thing there is a season. and a time to every purpose.” 12 Our eyes look upward with new hopes and new futures. 13 Life begins All existence is but “A Pause in Eternity” 16 . . . a master teacher and friend Here again it is time to dedicate our 1967-68 Mirror to one of our faculty. As we sit here thinking of the many hours of service that each of our faculty members has given us, we find it hard to pick one more deserving than another. Although each of our teachers has contributed to us individually, one stands out as being unique in that he has made this annual possible. It is little known how much of himself he has given. He is the type of person who is willing to take the back seat and let another take all the glory. But this, Mr. Anderson, is your glory: We dedicate this Mirror to you. May it always reflect your sincerity. w . v_m_ r nni — )rive at Princeton -7611 Orlando . . . a g; beauty. ..i your sch office. . surround: you to grc Y BARBER SHOP rly Harry's •est City ing Center n. -Fri. 9 'till 7 MARK Winter Park Mai yith Flowers'' •ARK FLORIST STUBBS rs by Wire Prescriptions E er, Orlando, Fla. It is our purpose to demonstrate from the large reservoir of Florida Conference Youth that they want to be trained to finish the work in this generation. As you pause to leaf through its pages, may you visualize again the thoughts, actions, and hopes of those who attended Forest Lake Academy. As editor I have survived a unique experience. 1 have passed through night- mares of impending deadlines, unwritten copy, and untaken photographs. I have witnessed the trans- formation of layouts, copy, and photos into a bound volume of happy memories. The work has been difficult, but the results are rewarding. 1 didn't work alone. Through the combined efforts of my staff and sponsor, we have completed the task we set out to do. I am grateful to each staff member for his hard work and words of encourage- ment. Although this annual depicts but a pause in eterni- ty. its memories will be lovingly cherished in the years to come. Feature Editor Forest Lake Academy is a headlight of the future, not a taillight of the past. It is the REFLECTOR of today and tomorrow not yesterday. We try to show on-campus action as soon as it happens with truth and accuracy. This is a difficult task which develops patience, gumption, and determination in each staff member. During the whirl of activity these cries arise: “Mr. Anderson, I can’t think of a headline for the REFLECTOR this month.” “Re- member, if you don't hand in your article, you're going to get a lower grade.” “Dean Clark, you mean to tell me this won't pass?” 1 wish to express my appreciation to my staff whose articles, photographs, and editorials along with hours of proof-reading and paste-ups have resulted in a newspaper we were all proud of. I am grateful for the year’s experience, and I wish the best of luck to the one who will follow in my footsteps. Brent Parker Circulation Manager David Rose Sports Editor STUDENT SENATE RECREATION COMMITTEE 50 M.C.C. was a challenging and worthwhile experience for the ‘67-’68 recruits. For three hours on every Monday night the men listened to lectures, took tests, saw films, and marched marched—marched! The campus vibrated with the bellows of the three platoon sergeants as they shaped their men into real soldiers. The annual bivouac was held at Camp Kulaqua this year. There the men learned the real duties of a soldier, including guard duty and K.P. In addition, the men learned what being a Seventh- Day Adventist in uniform really means. si CHORALE MR. MARTIN SOTALA DIRECTOR It is early morning as we board the bus with sleep still vivid in each face. There is anticipation of coming hours as the miles and hours are occupied with vibrant singing or meditative silence. The destination is gained and the mad rush begins .... dressing in robes .... setting up risers. . . . lining up ... . warming up. . . . and at last .... performance. Once again we hit the road .... once again we go through the same things for a repeat perfor- mance. Finally we head home and darkness falls accompanied by singing, pillow fights, and sleep! As school comes into view the words and music to “Our F.L.A.” resounds throughout the bus. 52 53 54 FOREST LAKE ACADEMY CONCERT BAND under the direction of MRS. Spectators watched many exciting and unpre- dictable games while the balanced teams hammered their way through to touchdowns. Each team was led by a determined captain: Bruce Meert Packers; Kevin Gruesbeck—Panthers; Sam Ferree—Torinos; Eddie Meeks The Meeks. 70 71 Basketball is a grueling sport of high tensions, daz- zling shots and swooshing baskets. It requires style, stamina, and ability. Teamwork is an essential in- gredient in this sport with precision as the key to perfection. Although the goal of perfection is not achieved overnight, basketball still provides an en- joyable outlet. 72 73 74 GIRLS’ TUMBLING TEAM Exertion, rhythm, flexibility, precision, balance, fun that’s tumbling. The Forest Lake Tumblers have a simple goal in performance-grace and beauty. All this is mixed with the spoon of cour- age-just you and the air, the fear of meeting the ground too quickly, and thinking up-side-down. For real action, try tumbling! 75 76 77 ACTIVITIES On Monday evening, August 28, 1967, our school year began with the annual Student-Faculty Hand- shake. Although we endeavored to learn each person’s name dur- ing the evening, we were over- come with the immense task of memorization, and we realized it would take weeks to get each name fixed with it’s proper face. Refreshments of donuts and 7 UP hit the spot, and when the pro- gram began we were already be- ginning to feel we belonged. Speedy Gonzales sang “Summer- time;” Kevin Gruesbeck and Brent Parker entertained us with the comedy of the Smothered Brothers; and David Rose played his guitar sang a medley of folk ballads. The tallest student enrolled at F.L.A. is Bill Swanson with a height of 6’ 414”. The shortest is Steve Fleming, 4’ 11”. The student who traveled the greatest distance to attend F.L.A. is Dick Flaiz from Prineville, Ore- gon. As the program drew to a close and we left the gymnasium to face the forthcoming school year, our hearts were filled with anticipation, hope and genuine warmth. We were grateful to be here at F.L.A. I 82 Our school picnic day was filled with rising early, decorating goal posts, eating breakfast, having worship, running and jumping in various contests, displaying skills, eating dinner, playing softball, playing football, eating supper, enjoying an evening program, and going to bed. We’ll never forget the class flags, popped balloons, crepe paper pom-poms, cheerleaders, low- flying airplanes, spirit sticks, honking horns, the snack shack, school spirit, and warm friend- ships displayed throughout the day. 83 84 Although the seniors dominated the football game by winning 41-13, top honors at the picnic went to the junior class for con- sistent winning and highest scores in all field events. We hope the spirit of sportsman- ship and fair play which perme- ated our campus on picnic day will continue to prevail during all successive school picnics in the years to come. ss As Christmas comes, joy and anti- cipation fill our hearts. Along with the Christmas spirit comes our Christmas Banquet. The stew- ardesses welcome aboard many a smiling face. Dr. Hoover pilots the Christmas jet, 1967, out of Forest Lake, and the roar of the engines fills every ear. Each holds dear his own memories—walking down the runway; an airplane sil- houetted on the wall; banisters entwined with mistletoe; a stew- ardess at the door; red candles; green holly; a psychedelic instru- ment panel; an atmosphere of organ music and gaiety; plates of good food and banana splits; Santa Claus and Sancho! Again the engines roar and flight 907 lands at the end of a perfect evening. 89 90 91 92 93 Ted and Loretha Orphans’ Party 94 Between reels at “Huckleberry Finn” moving picture. 96 Danny Nichols - “Huck Finn” 97 SENIORS Class Officers-Front Row: Danny Bentzinger, Pastor; Dennis Ward, President; Carole Anderson, Secretary.
