Journalism plays an important part in the school life of every student at F. L. A. It is through our publications that we really come to know our school. The school publications serve as significant means of public rela- tions. Many see our school only through the newspaper which they receive each month. For this reason, I feel that it should be the best. I appreciate the cooperation that the Reflector staff and I have received throughout the year. I would like to commend the staff for the excellent work they have done and the contributions that they have madeto promote the success of the paper. I would also like to extend words of appreciation to our advisors, Mr. H. Raymond Pike and Mr. James B. Davis. Their guidance has proved beneficial in surmounting many difficulties. It appears that a campaign for subscriptions to the paper will be held next year. The quality and circulation of this paper in the coming school year will depend upon the success of this campaign. I urgently ask each student to do his part in obtaining these subs . It depends on you! I have really appreciated and enjoyed the opportunity of serving as editor-in-chief of your school paper, and am looking forward to seeing the accomplishments that can and will be made in subsequent years. Best wishes and good luck! Mike Foxworth Editor-in-chief I can truly say that being editor of the MIRROR this year has been an education in itself. If you don't believe it, just listen to a few expressions that I have learned this year. You still nave four more pages of advertising to get!? Or this one, Mr. Pike, how would you like to just forget about my being absent from English yester- day?' one more might be, That's right, Mr. Anderson, we need ten dollars more for photo supplies. Actually, now as I look back on the greater portion of the work, I can truthfully say that there is great satisfaction in trying to bring to you the best MIRROR to ever reflect on this campus. Also let me say thank you to my staff for all the hours that you have put into the preparation of this, the 1966 MIRROR. John Lauer Editor SPORTS 59 Work, sweat, tears, Pigskin, fans, cheers. Brawn, brain, hustle, Yells, excitement, muscle. Through confidence in team To self assurance. Invincible endeavorings Entailing great endurance. Life boxed up in one hour And wrapped up in crepe-paper streamers. 60 61 Flagball was the core of the intramural sports. Four teams battled for the Championship. The standings at the end of the season were: Won Lost Tied Crimson Tide 5 1 0 Cents 4 1 1 Rams 2 3 1 Purple Hurricanes 0 6 0 62 64 65 68 The gym is the center of many activities on cam- pus. It is run like clockwork, and everything there clicks well. The interest in tumbling is here shown by the tumbling team and by an occasional Sunday gathering at the tramp . We call it talent, but it's really hard practice. It wasn't that the team fell that counted, but that it got up. 69 70 71 The picnic was a tremendous success. More school spirit was displayed on that day than F. L. A. had probably seen for forty years. Classes and individuals cheered their voices to mere enthusiastic croaks. The faculty joined in on the events when Mr. Thornton, chief cheerleader coach, was taken for a ride . Bernard ex- pressively exposes the exterior and interior forces which made the picnic: The intent interest and the sun-shiny weather. No one remem- bers races, running, jumping, and capture the flag games more than the contestants, but everyone was caught-upin the overwhelming spirit of the day. The Freshmen topped two of their opponents, but the Seniors took all. Believe it or not, they even got their flag back! The Seniors were even a little choked up because of the spirit of the lower classmen! Goats, cheerleaders, bells, amublances with orange crosses, track shoes, taped ankles, prizes, a pep-rally, volleyball, table-tennis, skating, megaphones, crepe- paper pom-poms, and even a marksmanship contest for Dean Cavanaugh are some of the events and small parts which, when pieced together, leave one happy memory of one big day at F.L.A. 76 November 20, 1965,.. You were there! The Pasture Party was one of the best programs of the whole school year. Besides the great folk talent displayed, other important features were the announcements of the Senior class officers of'66 and the Freshmen class officers. Out- standing Seniors were also proclaimed. We had some trouble singing On Top of Old Smoky (Spaghetti) , and the emcee shocked the audience by leading out in Yankee Doodle . 77 Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire , hairy hands, pudgy Cuban senoritas, a Mainiac St. Nick with a dis- tended abdomen. Beautiful decor, friendly warmth, and lovely dresses. Black boutonnieres, exacting etiquette, Mrs. D. with mistletoe! Santa's helper, a trip through a Winter Wonderland , and an all too short stroll back to the Doll House . 78 The Orange Blossom chorus transported us backwards in time to the era of the popularity of the Barbershop basso, baritone, tenor, and lead. Close harmonies, lyrical and lilting melodies, and old favorites made the evening most enjoyable. It seems that Mrs. Dickenson especially remembers this night. Some slap- stick comedy seemed to complete the evening. 80 Forest Lake Academy PRESENTS Ruhr Living Outside, the air full of a thousand odors, jangling sounds, bewitching sensations... inside, catchy slogans, practical Christianity, needed information and help, a grass floor. 81 Guatemala— land of crowded markets, sweet- smell i n g flowers, and pungent market odors; land of busy craftsmen, beautiful volcanoes, and friendly people.
