In the social studies' department the teaching personnel remained intact for the 1983 term. However, there was one change which affected not only the social studies' department but also all other departments as well. The department chairman was eliminated. This had some effect on the certain activities of the social studies’ program. The election of class officers which was formerly under the direction of the social studies’ chairman in his political science classes was channeled else- where. Also the survey of the pre- vious year graduates which was conducted by the department was delegated to another group. There was no change in the course of studies and the 12-week modular courses were continued. Psycholo- gy, youth and law, political science, and sociology were among the sen- ior subjects. With the resignation of David Knep- per, who accepted an assistant principal position in the Pottstown area, the English department need- ed a teacher. Applications to fill the vacancy were received by the board and finally midway through the year Allen Zajdel was hired for the posi- tion. He also accepted the job of drama coach for the plays and broadway musical to be presented during the second half of the year. With Henry Polasko, librarian, no longer department chairman, the English student assignments and requisition of books and supplies were shared by the English instruc- tors as a group. There was no change in the courses taught. The sophomores were taught grammar and composition, semantics, and literature. The junior studies included grammar, compo- sition, and literature and the seniors had the research paper, English lit- erature, contemporary literature which included Broadway Musicals.
