Elimination Of Chairman Affects Department’s Program

Page 21 text:

Those individuals involved in the special services' department play an important role in the educational system of the school. These teach- ers and para-professionals are vital to the life of the school. Among these were Richard Pasierb of the special education depart- ment, who followed a simplified course for his students, showing pa- tience and understanding for the slow learner. He helped those whom he instructed to fit into the main- stream of the student body. The guidance department with Steve Hrapchak at the helm assist- ed seniors in college choices while being available to all students in need of guidance. Librarian Henry Polasko, besides the many chores of library, aided students with seeking research ma- terials as well as working with the computers which were centered in the library. The school nurse, Clarann Hillen- brand, commuting between the ele- mentary and senior high, looked after the physical needs of the stu- dents. Betty Smith, receptionist clerk, lo- cated in the main office, took care of the switchboard and kept track of all student activity funds. She also helped teachers and students with zeroxing and running off tests or needed class materials. Finally the auxiliary personnel, Betty Schofield and Ruth Kensinger, who spent a couple hours each day at school, assisted Mr. Plummer with absentee records and also helped with the cafeteria sales. In the social studies' department the teaching personnel remained intact for the 1983 term. However, there was one change which affected not only the social studies' department but also all other departments as well. The department chairman was eliminated. This had some effect on the certain activities of the social studies’ program. The election of class officers which was formerly under the direction of the social studies’ chairman in his political science classes was channeled else- where. Also the survey of the pre- vious year graduates which was conducted by the department was delegated to another group. There was no change in the course of studies and the 12-week modular courses were continued. Psycholo- gy, youth and law, political science, and sociology were among the sen- ior subjects. The junior course of studies dealt with the Soviet Bloc, Oriental Cultures, the third world, and the classical world; the sopho- mores studied American Heritage, modern geography, wars and diplo- macy, and minorities and labor. Lett: Fred Vespa, at left, and Walter Calmer chat during a lunch pariod break. Left Center: Victor Balog looks for a teat for hie political sci- ence class.
