1969 FORESTER ALMA MATER Louise Sackett Class of ’72 Through the years our loyalty Will remain with thee, . In Forest Hills we'll place our trust For everyone to see. Forest Hills High School Sidman, Penna. We'll cherish all thy chosen goals No matter what fate wills,. In victory or in defeat We're true to Forest Hills. 1969 FORESTER Vol. 3 FOREST HILLS HIGH SCHOOL Sidman, Pennsylvania DEDICATION The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always been willing to pay it.” These words of the late John F. Kennedy echo in our hearts as we the class of 1969 gratefully dedicate this year’s FORESTER to the brave and loyal Americans engaged in combat in South Vietnam. In particular we wish to pay special tribute to one of our alumni, DONALD HUNTER, who gave his life in defense of human liberty. His courage as well as that of thousands of others will be an inspiration to the class of ’69 as we conclude our high school years and prepare to enter into the wider world of work and study. In the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, we. too. born to freedom and believing in freedom, are willing to fight to maintain freedom. We, and all others, who believe as deeply as we do, would rather die on our feet than live on our knees.” We keep faith with these men of South Vietnam and we pray that we shall be willing to serve when freedom calls. Society The National Honor Society is an organization based on four abstract qualities: scholarship, leadership, service and character. The first requirement is that the student must rank in the upper fifth of his class in his junior year and in the upper third as a senior. Class rank counts as one third of the total qualification. More important is the vote of the teachers. Teacher vote is based on the qualities of leadership, service and character. This counts as the remaining two thirds of the total. Once inducted, the student must maintain a B average to remain a member in the NHS. Through four inductions, approximately fifteen percent of class mem- bership become members of the society. This year the National Honor Society changed its induction procedure from a set program to a varied one. It also revised the constitution and its method of selecting new members. Service to the school and public was demonstrated by the society when it voted unanimously to donate to the Paula Pyle Fund, a fund to help finance the cost of a kidney transplant for Paula Pyle, a student from the Somerset area. The big social event of the year for NHS was the annual Snoball dance held on January 20. Music was provided by The Instigations. They're a lit- tle bit of laughs, a lot of work, short skirts, boots and football games all wrapped up in nine. This year’s squad, headed by Barb Wise, worked through the summer and all through the season to master routines in order to be ready for any event. The majorettes acquired new uni- forms which added a special touch to their appearance. The uniforms con- sist of green velvet jackets, silver shorts and a top hat. These uniforms were made with the Christmas parade in mind (see picture below). The senior members of the group are Barb Wise, Connie Bawiec. Jo Ann Burns and Sandy Theys. There are four juniors: Marsha Costlow. Ja- net Durica, Nanette Martinage and Toni Younkins. Sophomores include Suzie Johnson and Pam Crute, a Sub- stitute. StudentSecretaries Act As Aides Doric and Debbie check over the absentee roll for the day. Ten student secretaries report each day to the office of Mr. Sam Plummer, assistant high school prin- cipal. Their duties include setting clocks, checking attendance, answer- ing the phone, distributing absentee lists, checking on students who for- got excuses and running errands. Bert and Kathy check the file for some needed information. When the secretaries are not busy on a given assignment, they are free to use the time as a study period or visit the library. These girls have volunteered their services and are to be commended for their altruistic motives. Of the ten girls reporting each day five are seniors, four juniors and one sophomore. Eileen sets the clock each morning as her first duty of the day. 82 Library Club The Library Club, sponsored by Mr. Polasko, is an organization of student librarians. Its primary purpose is to aid in the efficient and proper use of the library facilities. The members of the group volunteer their services in order to help other students find needed materials for school or books for leisure reading. Book and record reviews were published in school newspaper in an attempt to give the student body a greater under- standing of the material available in the library. A book fair sponsored by the club was the largest source of income for the year. Fudge sales were also held periodically to raise needed money. Finally a one dollar dues assessment was charged per member. OFFICERS: P. Mellik, treasurer; L. Crum, secretary; G. Gallardy, vice -president; and B. Balko, president. LIBRARY AIDES: Mrs. T. Grattan and Mrs. W. Beveridge. Student librarians give up their free time to work in the library. SEATED: K. Madigan. L. Crum. G. Gallardy. P. Melick. B. Balko and B. Gabany. STANDING: G. Mervine. J. Miller. 83 The Humanitarian Club meets in the gymnasium to plan its projects for the coming year. These include: foreign exchange students, Foster Parents' Plan and Christmas packages for soldiers in Viet Nam. Brazilian Attends Forest Hills Fernando Pires de Castro, eighteen year old Bra- zilian, attended Forest Hills High School as an exchange student in cooperation with the Humanitarian Club and International Fellowship Program. He arrived in Decem- ber and was guest of Jim Dietrich during his three month stay. Fernando is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arlindo Pires de Castro of Rio de Janeiro, Guanabara, Brazil. His father is a retired doctor who works part time in a Bra- zilian clinic. His specialty is heart diseases. Fernando has a sixteen year old sister. Maria Luiza. He attends Santo Inacio—for boys only—and will be in the 13th grade when he returns. He has six classes a day, 45 minutes each. Classes begin at 7:10 each morn- ing and end at 12 Noon. His subjects include: Portu- guese, his native tongue; English, French, history, math- ematics, chemistry, religion, mechanical drawing and physical education. There the students do not change classes; rather the teachers go from room to room. Also, Brazilian schools have 13 grades. After graduation, Fernando plans to attend college to study electronic engineering. In order to be admitted to a university a student must pass a “big test. This is similar to our College Board exams. Fernando stated that the most memorable and interesting part of his visit to the United States was his tour of New York City and Washington. D.C. His most unusual encounter was the snow and the cold weather. He enjoyed most his discussions of his country at church and school meetings. Mr. Polasko outlines the Humanitarian Club’s program to Fornando as Tom Chulick, a club member, looks on. 84 James Dietrich Visits Panama Jim, the club president, welcomes Fernando Pires de Castro, Brazilian exchange student, to Forest Hills. James Dietrich, president of the Humanitarian Club for the past two years, visited Panama as an ex- change student last summer. His participation in the International Fellowship Program was sponsored by the FHHS Humanitarian Club. During his eleven week stay in Panama, Jim lived with the Jose Martinex family. He attended a Catholic all-boys school during the first six weeks of his visit. Here he found that the students took 13 courses a year but these courses were taken not more than three times weekly. Jim's greatest surprise was the lackadaisical atti- tude of the people. They never seemed to be in a hurry as we are here in the United States. There a person does things at his own rate of speed and maintains this steady pace without too much concern of how long it will take. The last four weeks of his visit was spent touring the country and it proved very fruitful. The highlight of his touring was the making of a complete transit of the canal on a Norwegian freighter. It took about ten hours. He also had the opportunity to do some deep sea fishing. Jim noted that the people of Panama are divided into two classes, the rich and the poor. A middle class, such as we have, is practically non-existent. Undoubtedly the most important result of his visit was Jim’s realizing how fortunate it is to be an American. Officers Mae Jean Plummer—Vice-President M ichcle Korenosk i—Treasurer Jennie Custer—Secretary 85 Jim Dietrich—President Mr. Polasko, club advisor, discusses the Foster Parents’ Plan with two club members, Eileen Brumbaugh and Mary Jane Medvesky. Humanitarian Club Adopts Four Children The Humanitarian Club through the Foster Parent's Plan. Inc. has “adopted four children as part of their program for the year. The children are pictured on the following page. The “adoptions” of these children will assure each of them continued benefits of the monthly grant of $8.00 each.clothing, supplies and medical and dental aid as needed. It will also ensure the children's education through elementary school, and they will have the friendly encouragement and guidance of Plan Social Workers and Director to help with some of their more difficult problems. Of equal importance to these fine children, besides the material benefits of Plan aid, are the Humanitarian Club’s gifts of friendship and personal interest in their welfare and progress. They tell these children and their families that someone, somewhere, really cares about their future and is anxious to help. Besides “adopting” the four children, the Human- itarian Club has sponsored foreign exchange students in cooperation with the International Fellowship Program. Through contributions of club members, small articles, such as: combs, Kool-aid, soap and stationery were sent as Christmas packages to area men serving in Viet Nam. In order to raise necessary funds for the above projects the club held a dance and conducted a successful sub sale. 86 Angelina is a shy and reserved little girl. She lives with her parents, three sisters and five brothers in the slums of Tondo. a low and easily flooded area about six miles from Manila. Her tather had been a boot- black until he became too ill with peptic ulcers and had several opera- tions. His condition does not im- prove. The mother also sells vege- tables in a market and earns about 60c a day. Home for this family is a room on Sing Kwan Chinese Nov. 3, 1955 Concepcion is an appealing little girl with brown hair and eyes and tanned complexion. She lives with her parents, a sister and three broth- ers in the slums of Kennedy, in the southwest outskirts of Bogata. Her father works as a watchman and earns about S28.00 a month. From this he must pay $3.75 each month on the amortization quota of their house and another $ 1.00 for utilities. The balance must support a house- hold of seven. Home for this family is a room, Dimitrios Tsimas Greek Nov. 19, 1955 the ground floor of a two story build- ing belonging to a relative so they need not pay rent. There is electricity in the building and they pay about S1.00 a month for it. There are no other facilities in the building. Water is gotten from a public faucet. They have almost no furnishings in the room, the main one is an old clothes cabinet. Angelina, a fourth grader, is an appealing child with black hair and eyes. Sing Kwan is a thoughtful and helpful young boy. He lives with his parents, two sisters and a brother and grandmother in a slum area of Kow- loon, a densely populated section of the Hong Kong mainland. The father joined the Hong Kong Army in 1950 and was discharged in 1961 when he was stricken with tubercu- losis. He became an odd job work- man in a garment factory and, when he is able to get work, earns about $21.05 a month. The mother also works and adds about $28.10 to about 1 ! xl4 in a house made of concrete, with a wooden floor and paper ceiling. Abby's reason for atten- ding college was financial. She had used up her husband's insurance money, and the only way for Susan to finish college was to use a generous scholarship which provided for moth- er and daughter. However, many complications arose especially when Abby met Professor Michaels, her zoology prof, played by Dan Perich. Other members of the cast includ- ed Carol Brenna as the housemother, Joe Krantzler as the dean, and as col- lege students: Jane Novak, Nancy Williams, Chris O'Donnell, Jennie Custer, Barbara Wise, Charlotte Ma- kin, John Wadsworth, John Bopp, Jim Dietrich and Brent Horner. The student directors were Janice Mindish and Rick Wess. Eileen Brumbaugh, Susan Horvath and Di- ane Chilcoli served as prompters. Prof. Michaels (D. Perich) kisses Abigail (K. T-he Holy Terror Senior Class Play Mrs. Sidney Herbert (Cindy Mathieson) is introduced to Florence for the first time by a mutual friend. Lady Stratford (Nancy Williams). This year, the senior class play initiated a new concept of acting into our school. For the first time, a drama had been chosen. The play, THE HOLY TERROR, was pre- sented on January 22 in the Forest Hills Senior High School Audito- rium. This is a story of Florence Night- ingale, a young girl who was a holy terror not only to her family, but also to the British Army and the War Office during the Crimean War. Florence shocked her aristocratic family by entering the degrading field of nursing. During the war, she fought for better care for the wound- ed soldiers. The play was a Hallmark Hall of Fame production in which Julie Harris won critical acclaim in her role as Florence. Mr. Yuhas directed the play with the help of student directors, Susan Minor and Alan Meden. Kathy Vrabel, as Florence, had the lead role in the play. The male lead was Anthony Ardire who played the part of Sidney Herbert. Florence Nightingale (Kathy Vrabel) tells Sidney Herbert (Tony Ardire), a member of the War Office, about her ambitions to help the suffering people of the world. Aunt Mai (Bev Fcsslcr) and Parthe (Gail Lapinsky) and Fanny (Jane Novak) are horror-stricken when Florence’s father (Rick Wess) has no objection to Florence’s becoming a nurse. Despite the discouragement Florence Nightingale receives from the chief medical officer (Bill Penat- zer), she and her staff attempt to clean up the field hospital. STAGE CREW FIRST ROW: C. THE LOOKOUT The school newspaper, THE LOOKOUT, is printed an average of eight times per year, with the advisory help of Mr. Paul Yuhas. The circulation is approximately 550 issues, which also includes thirteen area high schools and one college. There are two extra issues printed each school year, the Christmas edition, and the final edition, which is printed at the end of each school year. The modern high school uses journalism as an out- let for practice in composition. Through skills learned in newspaper reporting and editing, students can see composition and rhetoric as something meaningful to their own interests and purposes. The LOOKOUT attempts to balance good writing with good editing. The student editors seek to protect their readers from care- lessness and inaccuracy, bias and bad taste, while de- leting extraneous and unimportant news matter. It too carries the obligation of concise reporting, reliability and good taste. Has Circulation of 550 EDITORIAL STAFF: W. Plummer, Sports Editor; D. Mihalko, Art; N. Williams, Editor-in-chief; K. The Forest Hills Wrestling Team had a 1-12 record for the year and was led by senior Ken Zakraysek who wrestled in the 165 pound class. Ken sported a 11-2 record in dual matches and showed an overall rec- ord for the year of 14-4; this in- cluded the Christmas tournament as well as the sectionals. Ken wrestled for the past three years and was one of the initial founders of wrestling at Forest Hills. Runner-up honors for the Ranger squad went to Duane Toki whose dual meet record was 9-4; he showed a 10-6 advantage in the overall sea- son matches. Duane, also a senior, wrestled in the 145 pound class for three years. Gary Siplivy of the varsity squad led the underclassmen with a 5-6-1 for Rangers dual record for the season. A total of 45 boys made up the wrestling this year; 18 seniors, 14 juniors, and 13 sophomores. The varsity and junior varsity squads numbered 12 boys each. The team was hampered by five injuries throughout the year. Despite the many setbacks during this and past seasons, wrestling has proven its worth. It provides an activity for many boys who cannot compete in other sports which have size limitations. It also provides ac- tivity for those who do not enjoy other winter sports. Coached by Mr. Bcro, the team and its followers have shown that wrestling has its place in the sports program of our school. 118 FRONT ROW: Gary Siplivy, Dale Bourdess. Duane Toki. Student Council Represents the Entire Junior High At the beginning of each year 15 members of the stu- dent body are elected by their classmates to be members of the Forest Hills Student Council. Of these 15 students, six are elected from the ninth grade, five from the eighth and four from seventh grade. Each class also elects an alternate. To qualify for nomination a student must circulate a petition and secure 25 student signatures and three facul- ty members. The student council holds weekly meetings and these are held during the activity period under the direction of its advisor, Mr. Afton. This organization sponsors a variety of a c t i v i t i e s throughout the school year. This year these activities in- cluded holiday dances, showing of movies, editing and printing the “Happening”, the junior high newspaper: sponsoring intramural basketball games for boys and girls and donating money to worthy causes. This year’s officers are: Jacque Myers, president; Gerri Husinka, vice-president and Louise Sackett, secretary- treasurer. Pictured below are members of student council as they prepare to conduct their weekly meeting. FIRST ROW: (front seat to back): S. Harshberger, E. Tranter, D. Keller and J. Afton. SECOND ROW: G.
