CLASSROOM 4 mu es underground '7 It looks like an oil well. It if. But as the picture was taken, the diamond-tipped bit had just broken the world's record. It was entering a brand new classroom -nearly 4 miles underground. The Ohio Oil Company had sent it there, at a cost of 8l,500,000, to find out if there are new sources of oil waiting at depths never before explored. As these words are written, it is not yet known whether or not this well will ever produce any oil. But it's sure to produce something even more im- portant: knowledge. New knowledge. And so long as we live in a country where indi- viduals and companies have the incentive to search for new knowledge . . . to find the new way, the better way . . . this nation will continue to move forward. For progress comes from pioneering . . . from a constant search with minds and dollars . . . to find what'is waiting to be found. It comes from attending classrooms that are as vast as our own minds . . . as big as our lifetimes.
