'Tis a story that's most stirring, friends, but bcst of all 'tis true. It's the I uture as I saw it, and I'1ll telling it to you. I have a scientific friend, whose name I shall not tell VVho is daify on inventions, which he makes but cannot sell, And so when Christmas comes around he generously sends A handy, neat invention to each of all his friends. Now most of these are useless, and just lay around and rust, But the one I got last Christmas, friends, shall never gather dust. It was a pair of spectacles, but folks, I soon found out Thcy were the most remarkable that ever were, no doubt, For when you look at anyone with these specs beneath your brow You'll see him as he'll surely be just twenty years from now. Alia 1 cried I, the very thing, for now I'll surely see The Seniors in the fixture and can write their prophecy. And so I brought my specs to school to give the things a trial, I put the specs upon my nose, and turned my anxious face Toward 'thc Senior section where each one was in his placeg And the first my gaze did light on was a man in powdery denim, A-carrying bricks and still more bricks for all that e'er was in him. His brow was wet and dirty, and his tired back was bent, Yet he was Louis Hackett, now our worthy president. My gaze it shifted suddenly. This time my optics chose A portly ginghamed lady, a scrubbing dirty clothes. Her face was worn and wrinkled, and her tub was full of suds, Yet I knew 'twas Eula Tucker washing other people's duds. I took my gaze from this poor dame, and this time let it rest On a tall and lanky gentleman in a farmer's outfit dressed. His overalls were patched and his beard was long and gray, But I knew 'twas Clifford Duncan-a farmer pitching hay. Then Francis Yoder hove in sight, a silk hat on his dome, All dressed in latest Paris clothes that one ean't buy at home. His garb quite told his fortuneg you'd have known him anywhere, Our well-known Francis Yoder was a Xvall Street millionaire. Then Inez Hazlett did appear, and Oh, how I did stare! Ifor she was dressed in all those clothes that old maids always wear. Long skirts, and stiff collar, and the funniest of hats, On one arm a basket that was full of well-fed eats. Then I saw Avis Crosley and Glenn Sehooleraft, and you know They were quarrelling about something and just arguing sog I knew they'd been sent to Congress, for there is it men go NVhen they went to stir up arguments and get a lot of dough. And next Victoria Seymour appeared before my sight- A speller in her left hand, a ruler in' her right. Quite stern was her expression, for she almost frightened meg But the truth it is I saw her-an old maid school marin-she! Then I saw Esther Huhman and Ruth Underhill, as well, Their work-it was apparent-they had left their happy home To be saintly missionaries in a land beyond the foam Then our own Catherine Nicholson appeared upon the scene A stately married matron, with a family of fifteen.
