Varsity Football The Fordson High School Varsity Football team finished with an amazing 8-1 regular season record after gaining only one starter back, Mike laquaniello, from last season. They finished in second place in the always tough Wolverine A Conference, behind Trenton, which was the only team to beat the Tractors in regular season play. This year's offense consisted of a powerful ground attack as well as an effective air attack. Our senior starting backs included: Kirk Rydzik, F8, Dan Herman, HB, and Sam Sareini, FB. Our senior starting receivers included: Matt Bis, WR, Dave Crysler, WR, Eric Johnson TE, and Andy Salagan, TE. Everything was directed of course by Senior QB and co- captain, Mike laquaniello. Our defensive and offensive line improved dramatically and controlled the trenches for most of the season. This year's defensive line was one of the biggest and fastest in Fordson Football history: senior powerhouse and co-captain, Scott Lewis, Junior Hugeman Mike Kostovski, Junior Rob Slavin and Senior Gino Sesssa. Fordson is very proud of yet another winning football team. Even though they lost their pre-regional game to Catholic Central 7-2, they have nothing to be ashamed of. They not only destroyed thier competitors 52-0 on Home- coming, but they had an All-Stater in Mike laquaniello. Back Row: Rima Salamey, Kim Joseph, Nancy Veliu, Lisa Lewandowski, Coach John Kreger, Mandy Chandler, Lisa Risa, Cina Polanski, and Kelly Cialone This year's 1985 girls' varsity basketball team had another great season, while compil- ing a 19-5 record. The Tractors placed a second in the Wolverine A League, while losing twice to league foe Trenton. The other three losses were from state ranked teams: Divine Child, River Rouge, and Detroit Martin Luther King, who, by the way, were the Class A State Champions. The team also won their district for the fourth year in a row. The Tractors were led this year by senior Tri-Captains Mona Ali, Dawn Cialone, and Rhonda Saad. Also just as outstanding was junior Mandy Chandler. Next year's team has a lot of talent coming back with Mandy Chandler, Cina Polanski, Lisa Lewandowski, Kelly Cialone, and Rima Sala- mey. 14 Opposite page: The team heads down court. It was a good year for track but next season could be rough. The team is losing nine seniors, all of whom were important to the team. There were two records broken this year: the mile relay which consisted of Lori Abbas, Heather Newman, Samira Ashkar and Sandi Abbas; the other record that was broken was the 100 m hurdles by Sue Lotarski. The team had two regional champs: Judy Burke in high jump and Sue Lotarski in the 100 m hurdles. They both went to the state meet along with Amy Lance who was in the high jump. This coming year the team could have new coaches because the girls' coach, P. J. Mahar, may become the head coach for the boys' team. The team took third in the city meet, and fourth in both the regional and league meets. This year's team only has five returning seniors, but they have a lot of talent in their underclass runners. The 1986 Girls' Golf Team is looking for a bright future. Joe McKae is a wonderful inspiration for all of them. The Tower Tribune staff un- derwent some changes this year, including a change in advisors — from Mr. Ed Fryzel to Mr. Harold Derderian. Much of last year's staff has left, leaving only three experi- enced writers, seniors Raad Al- awan, Mary McComb and junior Cathy Konkoly. McComb and Al- awan are the editors. The staff is hoping to get out at least fourteen issues this year. Last year's low number was the result of many technical difficul- ties. Heather Allison, Pattie Bank, Al Divetta, Charlie Saad and Imad Hassan, make up the rest of the staff. Mass Media is a class where students learn about cameras and how to deal with people. This year's class increased from about five students to about twenty students. Mr. Zimmerman teaches the class. In Mass Media 2, students transfer from Fordson to Dearborn High. Group W Cable sponsors the Mass Media 2 class. Mass Media The French Club In Action Le Cercle Francais is Fordson's most active social-cuitural club. This school year over seventy stu- dents are involved in the club. Activities include restaurant out- ings, ushering school performan- ces, guest speakers, and socials. Club members enjoy participating in new leadership roles and group projects. Eclair sales and foreign language T-shirts are among the club's fund raisers. Mrs. Rosa Scaramucci, club sponsor states: Many students really develop great awareness of cultural differences in LCF. It's a pleasure to be involved with such interesting students and activi- ties. At Right: Treasurer terry Katinowski. He is an active member and also loves to read! It is sponsored by Mrs. Scaramucci, who with the help of the rest of the French Club, has elected Charisse Gencyuz as President, Chris Monteiro as Vice President, Linda Johnson as secretary and Jerry Kalinowski as treasurer. Members of the French Club produced a well done float which received second honors in the Homecoming parade. 69 Language Clubs . . . Last year, the Spanish Club adopted a little girl in Colum- bia. This year, they will be participating in many fund- raisers to help finance this girl. Mr. Henry Waterkamp is the head of the Spanish Club. There are no requirements for membership, but an interest in the Spanish culture can make it a fun experience. Top right: Spanish Club officers give us a good smile. Center: The Spanish Club. Below: It seems that Rose and Sandy also have the Spanish Club smile. Whoever said that you had to be of Arabic origin to be in the Arabic club? Well, they were wrong! There are no requirements for this club, but you must abide by the rules. The head of this club, Mr. Al Harp, and the members hope to improve student relations and promote cultural understanding. On their agenda for the 1985-86 school year are projects such as assisting in the Open House, going on several field trips with their dabke dancing troops and holding fund raisers for the needy and orphans in Lebanon. Arabic club officers for this year are President Alex Saad, Vice President Mike Bazzi, secretary Raghda Mansour, Treasurer Mariam Hamid, Sergeant-at-Arms Charlie Saad, and adviser, Kama! Makki. Top left: The Arabic Club. Above: Club Sponsor, Mr. Harp. Bottom left: Club Officers gather around for their picture. 71 . . . Take us Around the World! F.H.S. Clubs Show Community Pride The Y.E.S. Club has been very successful in raising money for the famine-stricken countries of the world. Money is raised through the collection of bottles, selling of fruit and posters, and other nick-nacks. The Y.E.S. Club is sposnored by Mr. Len Bloch. 72 The Beginning Alcohol Basic Education Studies program, better known as BABES, should be stand- ing high and proud! BABES, sponsored by Mr. Ver- lyn Beardslee, consists of sixteen selected members who travel to elementary schools and teach the children ways to develop their coping skills. Along with this, the members also share information pertaining to the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs. This year, BABES is working with second and third grade chil- dren. Puppet shows are put on to catch the childrens' attention while teaching them their weekly lesson. This makes it easier to introduce the kids to the different coping problems and help them turn in the right direction. Top: The BABES Club with Mr. Beardslee. Center: Laura, Sue, Diane, and Anna show their stuff. Bottom: The four puppeteers! 73 Student Congress Shows An Active Year Student Congress had a very active year. They plan to do service work for our community, donate money for needy families, Veteran's and Children's Hospitals, and Muscu- lar Dystrophy. Besides helping our communi- ty, they also help our school by holding elections, overseeing other clubs, and sponsoring school dances. Although it may seem like a lot of difficult work, Student Congress has its share of fun. This year's annual Turkey Trot was a winner, as were school dances and Homecoming Day. The people who are responsi- ble for a fun year of school activi- ties are: President, Todd Gonza- lez, Vice-Presidents, Ray Berry and Gino Sessa, Secretaries, Amal Ber- ry and Angela Beard, and Sponsor, Mr. Ashcroft. We are the first four-year class at Fordson High School. When we first came here we knew nothing about the school, and we felt like outsiders. Then we were sophomores and had grown a little more accus- tomed to the school. We began to feel like a part of the school. Then we became juniors and felt more open to the school and teachers. Finally the year is here! We are the big seniors! This is the year we will remember most. We will remember it because for once we are on the top of the totem pole, and it feels better than ever before. We've grown closer to each other, and now it is time to realize that this is the start of a new beginning. Upper left: She She Abraham and Mrs. Croves look over some prom details. The counselors try hard to work for students so they can have a good set of classes for proper education and a successful future. Working all together for the benefit of students, they are the special team: They are the ONES. Counselors Are The . . . ONES Mrs. Darlene DeYonke shows us her friendly smile. In addition to the required courses, students may choose from many elec- tive classes. These include: Yearbook, Newspa- per, Creative Writing, Accelerated Reading, Play Production, and Mass Media. Fordson's student population has special language needs, since many students come from other countries with different languages. To accommodate this need, Fordson's English De- partment offers ESL, or English as a Second Language. The goal is to move the student into regular English classes as soon as he is able to succeed. This year a new course was added called Conversational English. The goal of this course is to help students of other languages speak English more easily and accurately. All courses stress reading, writing, speak- ing, and listening skills. It not only enriches the student with the knowledge of reading, speaking, and understanding the language itself, but with the history, tradition, and culture of the country. The variety of languages ranges from French and Spanish to German and Arabic. At the head of the Foreign Language Department is Mr. Waterkamp. Fie feels that, Language study is a broadening experience which always contributes in some way to a student's personal development and makes his life richer. The Fordson Media center supplies stu- dents with material for research or enrich- ment. It also offers students a chance to take Media Training: the class that teaches students the fundamentals of working in a library. Mr. Waterkamp teaches his students that bodily language is a very important part of the Spanish language. 156 Ms. Stackpoole just realized she was Mrs. Rosa Scaramucci makes learning teaching French from a German hand- French a special experience, book. Cris just realized she was supposed to be learning French from the computer. Helping students grasp a new language, is Mrs. Stanyar's specialty. Math, the Language of the World The laws of the universe are stated mathema- tically. Math is the language of science and engineering. To better understand the world one lives in, one must understand math. With these profound words, chairman of the math depart- ment, William Podorsek, encourages students to expand their knowledge with any of the many math courses offered at Fordson. These classes range from Basic Math to Pre-calculus. Mathematically oriented computer classes taught by Mr. Kenneth Kosmalski are also offered to give students an advantage in today's ever-growing technological world. In these classes one learns to write the functions of a computer and eventually learns to write his own programs. This year we nave three new faces in the math department. Fordson welcomes newly-arrived Mr. George Stoops, Mr. Donald Billiar, and Mr. R. West, who also teaches Physics. Anyone can find a satisfying math course at Fordson, from the devout mathematician to other not-so-inspired students. Besides the required classes, such as Physics, Biology, and Chemistry, student can take courses for their personal enrich- ment. These classes include photogra- phy, aviation science and horticulture. A student may also choose to take advanced classes in each of the re- quired courses. With the future de- mand of scientific knowledge, stu- dents at Fordson are off to a great start. Mr. West has been added to the Fordson science staff. He teaches both Math and Science. O 1 tVe can tell Mr. Maas enjoys leaching his class all about Biology. Above: Mr. Carl Bengtsson 161 Mr. Allan Pearson Mr. Robert Brammer Gaining A Better Understanding Members of the Social Studies depart- ment believe that Social Studies deals with the realities of life and that students who take these courses will gain a better understanding and appreciation of their government. They would like to teach them to deal with modern problems and difficulties as well as gaining an under- standing of politics and history. Subjects to take in this department are Psychology, Personal Living, Geography, and Community Service, as well as the required courses. The Head of the Department is Mr. Fred Orris. While pre- paring students with entry level job skills, these classes also give the stu- dent a valuable knowledge and com- prehension of the business world. Fordson's programs enable students to locate jobs in a retailing or office position upon graduation, and they also provide a good foundation for continuing the study of business while in college. The co-op program, run by Mr. Frank Provenza, is an excellent experi- ence and opportunity for the students to find what type of occupations they desire, with the student also receiving high school credit for his work. Miss Marilyn Westrich stated, Everyone in business courses should take advantage of the opportunities offered at Fordson. They provide good bases for future college work and assist the student in learning and retaining important job skills. Senior loan Smith cracks a smile as she attempts to beat Mr. James Todd in this staring contest. Left: Miss Marilyn Westrich always appears to be happy. (Not pictured: Mrs. Janet Rifkin) 165 Industrial - Never Dull Never a dull moment is an excel- lent way to describe Fordson's industrial department. The idea of hands-on work gives students the incentive they need to do their absolute best. The main goal of the department, states Mr. Alan Ochsner, department chairman, is to . . . satisfy the needs of the students in the school. This includes attempting to even out the male-female ratio in the shop classes. Even though we lost the expertise of Mr. Dan Lukhardt in graphics, we gained two new teachers, Mr. Roy Curk in graph- ics, and Mr. C. Marchel in electronics. Above: Mr. J. Stergalas; Left: Mr. C. Not only does coach McIntyre have the responsibility of organizing all the athletic budget, but he also has to teach several gym classes. The department head is Mr. Pat Fairman. Physical education at Fordson is a required class for all ninth and eleventh graders, but students don't have to be a Freshman or Junior to take a physical education class. Other classes offered to students are Recreational Sports, Dynamic Flealth, and Power Sports. 168 Top Right: Mr. John Kreger pretends to be interested in the bulletin. It gives them the opportunity to work in the business field of their choice for three class credits. Through the years the number of students on co-op has fluctua- ted, but in the last few years it has stayed the same. Presently about one-third of the Seniors are on co- op. Recently a new section, Work Experience, was added to the program. Work Experience has the same requirements as the regu- lar co-op program, except that the students are excused for two hours. The co-op program has been around for about 50 years and so far it has been a very successful pro- gram. 170 Top Right: Smile Richie, you're on candid camera. An interest in doing creative work helps the student to succeed in these departments. The sound of the band thundering down the field inspires both players and fans. In addition, the Music Department offers courses in Jazz Band and Jazz Choir. The Art Department offers a variety of courses to stimulate many creative interests. Although courses can be fun, art is also a discipline. Center: The Marching Band thunders down the street. Below Left: Miss Madias; below: Mr. Phil Hespen. Bottom: Marching Band members. Mrs. Debbie Lampson, who is the depart- ment head, thinks that interest in Home Economics classes has been growing rapidly, especially with the addition of Advanced Clothing and Career Awareness. One important asset to the depart- ment is the Wheel Inn. Taught by Mrs. Pat Bunse and Mrs. Adelaide Summers, the Wheel Inn gives students great experience in the field of food man- agement. This department receives students from Edsel Ford, Dearborn, and Annapolis High Schools. Top Right: Mrs. Judy Taylor gives us a beautiful smile. The Special Services . . . The special aides and services people are very important here at Fordson. They give the students a helping hand and a friendly smile. The ESL Block has a lot to offer the foreign students that attend Fordson. The classes for the ESL students are: Citizenship, reading, language lab, Social Studies, and English Comprehension, teaching them how to read, write, and understand the English language. The special aides and services help to make Fordson a happy place to be a student. They are always willing to give their help to anyone who needs it. Even though they are not emphasized that much or are not seen walking through the halls, they are there, willing to give their help. 176 Top Left: Ms. Harry, the nurse at Fordson, smiles for the camera. hard work by many people. The primary work force consisted of the Yearbook Class which included 28 students. Each of them contributed a great deal to the production of the book. Among their duties were: designing the format, selecting the cover, organiz- ing the sections, and doing all the layouts for each page of the book. We wish to thank our photography staff, without whom there would have been no book. Under the direction of Mr. Carl Bengtsson, this group took and developed the pictures. Virtually thousands of pictures were taken. The staff then selected only the ones they felt told the story of the year. With little prior experience, the photogra- phy staff did a remarkable job. Our photographers were: Amy Lance, Jim Murray, She-She Abraham, Mac Christmas, Hani Bazzi, and Joel Hurley. Mr. John Adams also took several pictures. Special thanks goes to Bill Ciccone and Cris Monteiro for their long hours in the photo lab. We also wish to extend our sincere thanks to Mrs. Dorothy Failor who helped immensely with the collection of money. In addition, Mrs. Lor- raine Miller, of Walsworth Publishing Company, aided both the staff and advisor greatly. We truly appreciate her help. We have tried to produce an accurate and informative record of this year at Fordson High School. Although our goal was to make the book error-free, we realize that some errors may exist, and we apologize for them. John Adams, Yearbook Advisor, wishes to thank the staff personally for their dedication and commitment.
