Homecoming 51 High School Problems Dramatized Depicting the lives of high school students in today’s society, “Voices from the High School” was the fall play chosen for this year. This two act play contained scenes involving high school students going through the trials and tribulations of growing up. Some scenes featured such things as: a girl on her way to stardom as a major rock star, played by Diane Jozefczyk; the new kids in town, Al DiVetta and Kim Tokarczyk; the guy (Dan Zuccaro) who is constantly hounded by his girlfriend (Kim Moreno) because all he likes to do is party and have fun. These are just a few examples of the scenes in the play. “Voices from the High School” proved to be a popular play. It had one of the biggest turnouts in recent years. Before the school’s renovation in 1979, the store was simply a small room that sold limited supplies and one T-shirt. Now the Stop Shop sells a great deal of merchandise and also serves as an outlet for clubs to sell their merchandise. Mrs. Janet Rifkin and Mr. Mark Schooshanian serve as supervisors. The students involved in running the store include: Sally Labond, Karen Lombardi, Mia Sion, Lisa Costa, Adilia Mohassen, Sandy Coco, Davey Kop- chia, Giselle Sleiman, Innam Ramouni, and Alia Mahassen. What makes this group of young people so different is that it works hard to raise money in order to help with the problem of starvation around the world. Besides its barrels around the school where students are encouraged to drop off their deposit bottles, the club also raises hundreds of dollars through its Christmas fruit sale. Two new ideas tried by the club this year to boost school spirit were its Fordson High School name-writing contest and its sponsorship of the Wheaties Champion Contest. SAVE YOLK EMPTIES v fe FOR C. Each club holds meetings and special activities for the members. The students learn new and interesting things about the respective countries and customs. The students also get involved with the school. The French Club entered a float in the Homecoming Parade and placed second. During Open House the Arabic Club acted as guides for the parents who can’t speak English very well. The members of the Arabic Club also perform around the community doing the Dabke, a folklore dance. The French Club sponsored a T-shirt sale and eclair sales. The Mass Media students, under the direction of advisor Mr. Richard Zimmerman, put out “FHS News” about once a month. The school’s newspaper, the Tower Tribune, went to press about once every two weeks, increasing its production from last year. The Varsity Football Team fin- ished the season with a 7-2 record overall and a 5-1 league record for a second place finish behind Monroe. The Tractors suffered an opening game loss to Midland but then reeled off four before falling to Monroe on Homecoming Day. The team closed out the season with style by winning their final three games by scores of 16-0, 27-0 and a 21-7 win over Edsel Ford. The Edsel win marked the fifth straight time that Fordson has beaten the cross-town foe. Although they finished with a good record, many fans and players alike were disappointed about not qualifying for the state playoffs for the first time since 1978. The Tractors’ two losses were by only a meager total of six points, and both games could have gone either way. The season had many highlights, including such moments as when David Kopchia hit Sam Arfan in the final minute of the Trenton victory with a touchdown pass to cap a great Fordson comeback. The same two hooked up for the only score in a Lincoln Park thriller. Ronnie Stewart had a memorable evening against Wyan- dotte as the senior scored three TD’s. Next year’s team looks to be very strong as such fine players as Russ Donelson, John Janowicz. I I The girls’ basketball team had a remarkable season as they compiled a sparkling 22-1 record. The team went through the regular season with a perfect 20-0 record and added two lopsided playoff victories over Edsel Ford and Detroit South- western. They finally met their match when they took on the top ranked team in the state when they bowed to Farming- ton Our Lady of Mercy. The loss was a tough one to take but it did not take anything away from the way they played in the first 22 games. The team was led by its three senior tri-captains Kim Chandler. Wendy Wygonick, and Julie Romanowski. All three played exceptionally well all year long. The supporting cast was a young one that really played terrific under the pressure of playing on the varsity. Dawn Cialone and Nancy Skubik were the other two starters while Lori Abbas provided scoring punch off the bench. Returners next year include juniors Skubik. Lori and Sandi Abbas, and Lynn Hurley. The team was simply awesome as Mo Hazemy and Bob Abraham led the squad to an outstanding season. Relying on senior leadership to see them through, the team was carried by Hazemy, Adel Ashkar, Mike Berry, Sean Call, Jim Castlevetere and Matt Suni. Coach Lyle Beardslee’s boys also captured the very first Wolverine ‘A’ title. The team also placed very well in both regional and state meet action as they boasted such fine showings as second in regionals, and eighth in state competition. Being ranked in the top ten during most of the year, the squad had added pressure on them going into the state meet, but they showed no sign of faltering as they did an excellent job against the best teams the state had to offer. Despite losing some fine seniors to graduation, next year’s team looks to be another powerhouse. Such fine underclassmen as Abraham. Donabedian also had a great career at Fordson and finished the year with a glittering 29-12 mark. The top underclass- man this year was sophomore Karl Hossein who fancied a 24-15 record. Mark Matras was the only player who saw any real action besides Hamid. So right off the bat, Matras and Hamid knew they would be the leaders. They certainly did a good job as the team raced through its first 18 games without a defeat. The hype was at a feverish point when Wyandotte came to town on the last Friday of the season and crushed all the high hopes. Fordson won its final regular season game to end with a great record of 19-1, but it was disappointing not to get 20. Along the way. This season marked the first losing season in Fordson history. Coach Joan Hitchner was disappointed with the team’s senior leadership and perfor- mance. With a better output from the seniors, a much better season was possible. Junior Laura Kuchka played outstandingly all season and was considered by Hitchner as the team’s best all-around player. Another bright spot was the play of sophomore Rosmarie Bruno. Despite the disappointing year, the season was not without highlights as the girls grabbed fourth place against some tough competition. Coach Pat Fairman’s tankers chalked up an 8-6 record and finished in fifth place in the rough Wolverine “A” Conference. The highlight of the season was the one point victory over Edsel Ford, whom Fordson hasn’t beaten since 1969. Steve Baum and Scott Montrief captained the team and both showed good leadership. Baum set a new 500 yard free style record and qualified for the state. Another strong point of the team was the diving of Jason Wisby and Mark Dean, who captured first place in 11 of the 14 dual meets. This was one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory as three of the dual meets were won by Fordson by only one point. It was an up and down season for the Tractors as they came up just short in the exciting city tournament. In the opening game of the tourney, the Trac- tors topped Dearborn High in what proved to be the most exciting game of the season. It appeared that Fordson had won the game in the seventh inning by one run and both teams went home. However, Dearborn pro- tested an umpire’s ruling, and both teams had to come back to complete the game. Dearborn tied the game at 5-5, but Fordson rallied and won the game 9-5 in ten innings. With the victory they advanced to the championship game against Edsel Ford and lost a heart- breaking 3-1 decision. Fordson then lost the next five games including a 22-5 shellacking to Wayne and a depressing 12-2 defeat to Lin- coln Park, a game that ended in a bench-clearing brawl. Despite five straight losses, the team didn’t quit and then reeled off three straight. TOP LEFT: The Fordson bench awaits something spectacular to happen. During the Washington trip, students can take part in such things as government workshops, seminars and tours, plus much more. With the help of their advisor, Mrs. Pat Baron, Fordson’s Close-Up Participants were able to take tours throughout the Pentagon and other official buildings, which are normally closed to the public. There was also plenty of free time for those curious people who wanted to see more than just what the group saw. The Fordson Chess Team, coached by Mr. Paul Simmons, consists of about seven students. Ronnie Len was first in order of board, followed by Stacey Luke, Mark Marinicci and Mahmoud Fawaz. Michelle 196 Index Credits The 1984 Fleur de Lis is the result of the hard work of several people. First of all, the Yearbook Class, which met during the Fall Semester, was the main group involved in the production of the yearbook. These twenty-three people organized the sections, wrote the copy and cutlines, did the proofreading, organized the sales program, and eventually distributed the book. Putting together a 200 page book “from scratch” is no simple task. Their labors deserve recognition. The photography crew directed by Mr. Carl Bengtsson also deserves a lot of credit. Hundreds of hours are spent taking, developing, and printing pictures that go into the book. Senior Dan Jolly, in particular, worked extremely hard in an attempt to present the best possible photography. Though not an official member of the staff. Senior Jim Flynn helped out during the Spring Semester. Appreciation is also extended to the office staff, especially Mrs. Dorothy Nabozny, who aided in sales. To Mrs. Lorraine Miller the staff would like to extend its thanks. Mrs. Miller is the publishing company’s representative for Fordson, and her many trips to Fordson to assist in the production of the book were very helpful. Finally, the members of the 1984 Fleur de Lis staff would like to thank the entire school for its cooperation. We realize that at times we have created a temporary inconvenience when pictures were taken or interviews conducted. We hope you thoroughly enjoy the 1984 Fleur de Lis and that you cherish the memories here represented.
