After a term of 18 years, Mr. Harvey Failor retired and was replaced by Mr. William Letsche. Mr. Letsche’s career at Fordson began in 1954. He taught health and physical education. He also held the office of boys’ athletic director. Following Mr. Letsche’s departure in 1967, he held several administrative positions: serving as assistant principal at Lowrey from 1968-71, returning to Fordson as assistant principal until 1977, serving as assistant principal at Dearborn High until 1981, and most recently as principal at Lowrey. “It’s always nice to come home to a building you respect and love,” said Mr. Letsche. You don’t even know if you have enough credits to graduate. So who can help you? Well, our fine staff of counselors will be your friends and help you out with almost any kind of information you might need. Information including college preparation, ACT and SAT testing, career information, and the availability of scholarships is available. This year Fordson added a new counselor, Mrs. Virginia Warden, because of the addition of the ninth graders. Mrs. Warden used to be at Edsel Ford before coming to Fordson. He has improved the band with such changes as new uniforms, trips to places like Disney World, and a larger, better quality band. The Music Department combined forces in December to produce the musical, “Scrooge.” If you have ever been interested in Art, there are five courses that are available. Also, throughout the year there were art shows that students entered. The classes offered are Basic Drawing and Design, Drawing I and II, Commercial Art MV. and Jewelry I and II. F-Week 59 ‘Government Inspector’ at FHS “The Government Inspector” was presented on April 1 and 2, 1982 at Fordson High School as its spring production. The comedy was well attended and received by students, parents and staff. The play had a large cast of student actors. “The Government Inspector” deals with a small Russian town whose officials hear that a government inspector is on his way to check up on things. The town’s hospital is filthy, the judge raises geese in the courtroom, local accounts are in an incredible state of confusion, and the Mayor is blatantly open to bribes. The play’s humor revolves around the town’s attempts to solve these problems in time. The lead roles in the play were performed by Felicia Berky, Darla Wolak, and Joel Wolf. The director of the play was Mr. Richard Zimmerman. 60 Spring Play 1982 OPPOSITE PAGE: TOP LEFT: Alright, who kicked me? says Bob Suchyta. It increased its number of copies to around twenty editions compared to fifteen last year. The paper is full of student events and activities for all the readers to enjoy. It takes one to two weeks to complete a Tribune with students involved in all aspects of the production. About 1,800 copies are printed and passed out. Editor Michele Lake and the rest of the staff spend a lot of work on the paper, and hopefully the students are informed and entertained by their efforts. Through our underclassmen years, the definition of a senior was being number one. Now when we look back through our years at Fordson, the most memorable time will be our Senior Year. Our most memorable moment will be our football team’s outstanding performance at the Silverdome and bringing home the title of State Runner-up. We will remember all the fun we had with our friends. We’ll also remember the way we saw ourselves and the way we wanted to be. When it is time for us to graduate, some may not want to leave and some of us will want to proceed and fulfill our lives. A complete victory was scored over cross-town rival Edsel Ford despite attempts by the T-Birds to out psyche our players when some of theirs shaved their heads. The final: 21-7. Sweet revenge prevailed for Fordson during the state quarterfinals, where Monroe crumbled under the Tractor powerhouse, 29-7. This game had special significance to Coach Jestice who celebrated his 100th football victory at FHS. It took only one week later to enjoy 101 with a 3-0 victory over Saginaw in the semis. Going back to the Silverdome was a victory in itself. The Tractors fought fiercely only to fall in double overtime to Farmington Harrison, 17-14. Fordson, however, should not be ashamed. The 1982 Girls’ Basketball Team broke the school record with sixteen wins and eight losses. Candi and Kelly were the only seniors on the team, and they did a lot to win district. Coach John Kreger stated, For a team with only two seniors, they did tremendously well. The future looks bright if the girls really work hard. While their potential did not exceed their performance at times, the team did have some outstanding accomplishments. For example, the Tractors had a tri-meet with Edsel Ford and Dearborn High at Edsel. The Tractors defeated Edsel in two of three games, and then went on to beat Dearborn, who at the time was ranked 7th in the state, whereas Fordson was not ranked at all. Coach Joan Hitchner said, “It was the Michigan volleyball upset of the year.” One sad note was that the Tractors lost in the first round of pre-districts play to Henry Ford High School of Detroit. Going to the district playoffs, Fordson won their first game but lost their second one to crosstown-rival Edsel Ford, 5-3. During the season, Captain Mark Gaiss had an outstanding year pitching and at shortstop. This year senior leadership will have Mike Marinucci, Larry Kopchia, Mark Brown, Mark Baker, Mark Henderson, Rodwin Saad, Rick Smith, and also junior Mike Corbett to rely on. Coach Carman Morga stated, “Again, I can’t make any predictions. If we don’t get any pitching help from our juniors, we are going to have difficulty getting into the middle of the pack.” LEFT: The Fordson outfielders practice catching fly balls before the game. 1982 BOYS’ BASEBALL. The Fordson Tennis Team, with an impressive record of 9-3, surprised its opposition by taking second in the Great Lakes Eight, a big improvement over the previous year’s last place finish. There were eight of our tennis players who advanced to the finals, only to lose in an early round of play. First place finishers Wyandotte had 38 points, followed by Fordson with 20, and Monroe with 17. However, Glen Turner and Kevin Harris were both missing during the event. Some personal records set dur- ing the year were Lorenzo Vallone tying his school high jump record of 6' 5 and Larceio Pugina’s setting of the discus record. For a tenth grade class the task is made more difficult because the students have had little time to adjust to a new school and to get to know each other. However, this year’s sophomores elected four qualified people to lead them, and interestingly all were girls. The girls elected were: Lisa Wehab, president; Renee Bonemer, vice-president; Kim Tanner, treasurer, and Carolyn Adamski, secretary. Class sponsor for the sophomores is Mrs. Pat Baron. First of all, the Yearbook Class which met during the Fall Semester was the main group involved in the production of the yearbook. These thirteen people organized the sections, wrote the copy and cutlines, did the proofreading, organized the sales program, and eventually distributed the book. Putting together a 200 page book “from scratch” is no simple task. Their labors deserve recognition. Another group of students who also deserve a lot of credit is the photography staff. Mr. Carl Bengtsson directed a group of students who took hundreds of pictures, developed the film, and printed pictures. Some of these students, like Bill Kiafoulis, Ron Howard, and Rob Cwik spent a lot of their own time completing this work. Hundreds of hours were involved in their labors. Appreciation is also extended to the office staff, especially Mrs. DiRezze, who aided the staff in sales. To Mrs. Lorraine Miller the staff would like to extend its thanks. Mrs. Miller is the publishing company’s representative for Fordson, and her many trips to Fordson to pick up materials and her aid in the production of the book were very helpful. Finally, the members of the 1983 Fleur de Lis staff would like to thank the entire school for its cooperation. We realize that at times we have created a temporary inconvenience when pictures were taken or interviews conducted. Again, thanks!
