Fleur de Lis Fordson High School Dearborn,Michigan 1951 My name is Sparky and the title of my position at Fordson is School Spirit. I imagine that the majority of you are not aware of my im- portance. Well, I am so important that without me you would not win a football game, your pep rallies would not exist, and your parties and dances would be flops. Let’s take a look at the past year’s activities, so that I may prove that you do need me. j4 k I f? wBBB MET . I have been around Fordson a long while, and many times have question, “What does Fleur deLis symbolize?’’ Well, I did a little inves fgation and found that Fleur de Lis is French and means “flower of the lily.” The three petals of the flower represent mind, hand, and spirit, which are inscribed on the Fordson coat-of-arms. The coat-of-arms is on the stained glass window above the statue of Lincoln on the landing of Now, when someone gazes at your yearbook and asks you what the French title means, you are prepared to answer ijj 4 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Top Row: Richard Hespen, Miss Florence Schuster, Miss Anne White. JANUARY SENIORS Now that we have reached these January seniors let's stop and reminisce. These are just more students with whom I have worked during the three-year term, but I still remember them well. I used to sit with them at the football games, and I went to all their dances. How well I remember the J-Hop. We had a great time putting it over. It was a lot of work, but we loved it. And we must not forget the Christmas program. We had a lot of fun making the wreaths and the garlands. By Christmas week, we were all ready for Santa. Then senior week finally arrived, and we had a wonderful time! I remember how proud the graduates were to don the traditional caps and gowns, and how proud I was to put the many club and honor pins on their gowns. I handed them their diplomas the night of January 25, 1951, and said good-bye. This was the end of my job with this class. But, I must admit that I did take a little look-in at the Senior Prom, and everything was just perfect. 12 JANE ALLAN EVANGELINE ALEX White Chapter Y-Teens; ARMANDO ALVIANI DEWEY ANDREWS Dramatic club; Fleur de Lis, club editor. I sometimes wished that my shadow could have gone on part time spirit duty for me. I remember how active these seniors were. While we were having our yearbook pictures taken, we were also practicing for the operetta, “Trial By Jury.” And right about the time of St. Patrick’s Day, we were dabbling in green paint, which was being used on scenery for the All-School play, “On Borrowed Time.” And remember how we would go to club meetings and then afterwards hurry to the baseball game or track meet. Then the time came to autograph our senior friendship pictures. Senior week fairly flew by, and the class graduated. It didn't seem possible that my three years with this bunch were over already. But, we had one more time together at the Senior Prom, and what a time! Remember? 22 DAVID ABRAHAM SYLVIA ABRAHAMIAN RONALD ADAMS ROY ALLEN Football. G.A.A. Football. After two lean years on the gridiron I finally made a comeback in football. I fooled the experts who said I didn’t have a chance. My boys won the Border Cities League championship. Our record was five victories as compared to four losses. Here’s how I fared against each team: MONROE—It didn’t take long for my boys to get the year’s initial touchdown. John Turke compered 96 yards with the opening kickoff to score with the game only 17 seconds old. Before the contest was over, I had counted twice more on paydirt plunges by Turke and Dave Longridge. Monroe got one itself. Final score, Fordson 20,Monroe 6. FLINT NORTHERN—Oh, my aching backs and linemen. It wasn’t quite a track meet, but we couldn’t catch the Vikings. Result: Flint Northern 47, Fordson 6. A pass, Roger Hawraney to Bob Szczarba, was our only TD consolation. lncidently,Flint went on to win the state champion- ship. CATHOLIC CENTRAL-We won a hard-fought decision. The score was 7 to 6. Our score came on an end run by Turke. George Lubienski con- verted the point, which later proved the difference. C.C. added its touchdown in the third period, but the extra point try was no good. HIGHLAND PARK — A see-saw battle found my Tractors coming out on the long end of a 26 to 15 score. We were held to a 13 to 13 tie in the first half, but we came back in the final two periods. Roger Craig led the attack with two touchdowns, while Longridge and Hawraney scored once each. Captain Virgil Pampu ROYAL OAK—Thirteen was our lucky number as we steamrollered the Acorns. Longridge opened the scoring for Fordson, passing seven yards to end Ray McLeod in the end zone. Bolting over from the two-yard line in the third period, Long- ridge sewed up a 13 to 0 contest. GROSSE POINTE—This is where I clinched the league championship. Going into the game an underdog, my boys pounded out another 13 to 0 win. Hawraney and Art Banas collected touch- downs as we garnered the title. WYANDOTTE—“And the rains came” as did loss number two. Overconfidence and a steady down- pour drowned out Tractor victory hopes. We fell two TD’s behind in the first half. We couldn’t recover completely in the final stanzas although we counted twice on touchdowns by Longridge and Craig. The final score, Wyandotte 14, Fordson 13. DEARBORN—For the city championship we had hopes, but so did our west end neighbors, the Pioneers. They got the final nod, winning a 14 to 0 game. The Pioneer gridders were undefeated through nine straight contests. HAMTRAMCK-We saved our best for last, but it still wasn’t enough. Our boys played a valiant, scoreless ball game through the first half. But in the third quarter the Cosmos hit paydirt. We had a number of scoring chances, but when the shadow of the goal posts was in view, the Cosmos’ de- fense turned into a brick wall. The scoreboard showed Hamtramck 6; Fordson 0 at the final gun. 59 Bob Lewis, Bob Mari janovich. SWIMMERS ENJOY MOST SUCCESSFUL SEASON IN YEARS Swimming is another sport in which I made a comeback. Under the tutorage of two fine coaches, Gus Stager and his assistant, Mike Megreigan, my boys posted their best mark in many a season. They finished with a record of eight wins, four losses, and one tie. Six of those victories came in Border Cities League competition. The Tractors lost to three of the outstanding teams in the state. Royal Oak beat them twice, while Saginaw Arthur Hill and Monroe took one decision each. My boys set records in six events this season, and climaxed a successful season by finishing eighth in the state tank meet at Michigan State College. i Head Coach Gus Stager Assistant Coach Mike Megregian 65 THESE BOYS PACED THE FORDSON SWIMMERS THIS YEAR Roger Craig Fordson 48 Ford son 43 Fordson 62 Fordson 48 Fordson 34 Fordson 52 Fordson 46 Adolphe Fordson 34 Rhode Fordson 48 Fordson 31 Fordson 42 Fordson 51 Ross Thompson Jim Kruthers NEW RECORDS SET IN Captain Don Arndt Highland Park 36 Monroe 41 Jackson 22 Wyandotte 33 Royal Oak 50 Grosse Pointe 32 Highland Park 38 Monroe 50 Bill Wyandotte 33 Black Royal Oak 53 Grosse Pointe 42 Ypsilanti 33 Barney Morias Virgil Schaefer 1950-51 SEASON’S RECORD 100-yard Breaststroke-......Don Arndt 200-yard Freestyle.......... I will not embarrass her by flattery, but will just state her record. That should prove to you what a great personage she is. She won the title of National Baton Twirling Majorette Queen of America in both 1949 and 1950. In addition to these well- deserved honors, she accumulat- ed a collection of thirty-three medals and thirteen trophies. And need I remind you of the numerous times she twirled at our football and basketball games and pep rallies. I will never forget the way she twirled two batons at once. What a gal! Remember Joyce Kennedy? Fordson always will. V 83 Leading the Fordson band through formations and marching were the majorettes.
