The January 1947 Senior Class officers accommodated a com- paratively small class of 185. They successfully raised money for the Senior Class fund with coat checking concessions at dances and selling potato chips and candy at basketball games. They helped to plan the Senior Skip Day to Cedar Point with the June 1946 class. Plans for the Senior Prom were successful and many attended at the Masonic Temple. The climax to the excitement of a Senior’s life was graduation itself with the customary open house parties following. c Dave Gerald Aichler—General Band; Orchestra; Dance Orchestra; Vaudeville Dolores Madeline Alexander— College Commercial Girl Reserves; Dramatic Club: Senior Play; All School Play; Homeroom Representative Gail Allen—College Preparatory Girl Reserves; Dramatic Club; Service Squad; Senior Play; All School Play Betty M. The June senior class officers were a comparatively busy group. They secured concessions at several sports events to raise money for the senior class fund and were also partly responsible for the success of the senior play, “A Lit- tle Honey.” The class was one of the largest in the history of Fordson, and organizing this many students was quite a job for only seven people. Plans for the Senior Prom were begun as early as September by this active group. The date was set for Friday, June 20. The scene of the prom was in the Crystal Ballroom of the Masonic Temple. The evening was climax- ed with the Grand March led by the class officers. Hard work on the part of all the officers helped to make the prom a success. 16 Shirlee June Abraham—General Tower Tribune Joseph B. Adams—Industrial Frank A. They sponsor school dances and assemblies. This year the entire student body has been given greater independ- ence and have proved themselves worthy of the shouldered responsibilities. Sponsor is Mr. Russel Catherman. A comparatively new club, the I.C.C. was organized to create greater harmony between the different clubs in the school and the entire student body. The sponsor is Mr. Russel Catherman. Each club in the school elects a member to represent them. He in turn cooperates with the other members and acquaints himself with the activities of other students. 58 The National Honor Society was first founded in 1921 for the purpose of stim- ulating the scholarship, leadership, service and character of students. The objective of the N.H.S. is to raise the school’s standard to a higher plane. Fordson’s N.H.S. was organized in 1928 with five members. Approximately 1,080 students have since been named to the N.H.S. To become a member a student must have maintained at least a B average and rendered some service to the school. These fellows were responsible for receiving and recording all sales and carrying on an extensive adver- tising campaign. To them a lot of credit is due for handling the business transactions that were necessary to make this year’s Fleur de Lis the best ever. BUSINESS STAFF FLEUR DE LIS Standing: Ed. Stackowi- ak, Tom Oppat Sitting: Stewart Veit. Ron Stankey, Bob Monberg 71 The president of the Student Council is automatically the Captain of Hall Captains. He, along with the other members of the Student Council, choose a squad of seven hall captains, one for each hour of the school day. Their captaincy expires at the end of the semester. To be eligible for a position as hall captain, one must serve as a hall monitor, have a good service record, and be a 12A. During their time as a hall captain, each one trains two hall monitors to be eligible for captaining in the following semester. Fourteen are trained. Of them, seven are chosen. The duties of a hall captain are to take roll, and to see that each hall monitor is efficient in checking hall passes. This often is done by sending a fake pass around the building and checking the monitors in that way. Captains also rotate the stations of each monitor at the end of a week, or possibly two. Night recreation on Monday is open to both boys and girls. Of course, girls are the only ones in Modern Dance. The ex- ercises help posture, poise, and gracefullness. The Modern Dance Club is very active and is a comparitively new club. The sponsor is Miss Stel- la Melick. POSTURE------CAPTAINS HALL CAPTAINS Left to Right: Marion Trapp. Jim Davis. An entirely new and different club joined Fordson this year. “To promote all phases of gas model aeronautics, auto, and boat activi- ties” is the purpose of the Gas Model Airplane club. The club is limited to twenty members and follows the pattern of the A.M.A. The members pay dues of 10 cents every week. They study and build gas models which will operate. At the end of the year, if the member has successfully built and operated his mach- ine, which probably cost him between $100 and $200, he is awarded a Fordson letter with the initials G.M.C. at the top. Sponsor is Mr. Ferris Lewis. The Fordson Camera club was establish- ed by the many students who wanted to in- crease their knowledge of photography and their photographic technique. Mr. Sam Vasiu sponsors the club. Some of the club’s many activities include printing, enlarging, and de- veloping photographs. Each year they hold their own Photographic Salon. Prints are judged on the basis of general interest, ap- peal, contrast, detail, and photographic tech- nique. Other activities include an annual club picnic, at which fine scenery and out- door shots are taken. 73 THE WOULD IS THEIU INTEREST The Pan Pax Union, sponsored by Mr. Von Knisely, is Fordson’s chapter of the Student Federalists. The Student Federalists are advocates of “One World,” and the Pan Pax is carrying out this theory in Dearborn. At their meetings, panels are held on various topics which the students feel are important to the security of civilization. Their efforts go beyond the walls of Fordson High School and right into the homes of Dearborn families. One of these efforts is the film forum, which they sponsor every Thursday evening. Both young and old are welcomed. The film forum is an adult educa- tion program and its aim is to show movies of other countries, provide a speaker to talk on that country, and to allow for a discussion period to help prepare the citizens of the city for “One World.” The Pan Pax Fax, a bi-monthly newspa- per, is published and written by the Pan Pax Union. Anyone interested in improving his markmanship is encourag- ed to join. The Usher club, sponsored by Mr. Harold Hoffenbacher, was organized in the last year. The name tells the story, so to speak. It is a group of students or- ganized to act as ushers at football games. The school has provided varsity sweaters for their use. The Varsity club sponsors the annual Honor banquet for the students who have participated in school sports throughout the school year. Aside from the Honor banquet, the Varsity club is always eager to give a helping hand to any service in the school. Boys belonging to the Boys’ Bowling club, not only receive practice in skill at a game in which popularity increased with the years, they are able to receive this practice at a lower rate than is regularly paid. The Dear- born Recreation alleys are reserved for the Boys’ Bowling club once a week. At this time the club forms leagues that compete against each other. Honors are awarded to the win- ning team. ADMINISTRATION Mr. Frederick E. Mueller, new superintendent of Dearborn schools, has replaced Mr. Harvey H. Lowrey, who re- signed in June, 1946. Prior to his present position, Mr. Mueller had been a prin- cipal, dean of junior college, and a Naval officer. He believes that the Dearborn school system has as great potentialities as any other school system in the country. It is located in a city that is large enough to provide all of the services required and has the advantages of being in a city small enough so that these services do not become mere paper agencies. Mr. Mueller thinks that Fordson is a great high school and has reasons for believing that Fordson will soon rank as first in the high schools of the country. BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education has many duties, all related directly, or indirectly, to the wel- fare of the school, students, and the commun- ity. The Board appoints such officers as the superintendent of schools, deputy superinten- dent, the assistant superintendent, the direc- tor of the bureau of educational information and research, business manager, attorney, auditor, architect, when needed, and an engi- neer. It also is empowered to appoint officials necessary to the carrying out of various oper- ations, such as taking the school census. The Board chooses sites and builds neces- sary buildings, appoints the many teachers needed, arranges for and permits outside use of the schoolrooms, auditoriums, and gymna- siums of the schools in the system. Tate, our distinguished principal. His friendly smile and shock of white hair have be- come as much a part of him as his beaming personality. Mr. Tate is held responsible for everything the students of Fordson do. In charge of recreation and discipline is Mr. Russell Catherman, assistant prin- cipal. He is noted for being fair and square in all his decisions. Having been a coach here at Fordson for several years, he realizes the importance of fair play and good sportsmanship. Mr. Harry H. Huller, as- sistant principal, has the responsible position of be- ing head counselor of the advisory system and of or- ganizing the complicated planning of class schedules. Through his untiring ef- forts, the students of Ford- son are able to have author- itative advice concerning their vocational life. Conversing on important matters are the “Big Three”. The Tractors broke into the win column five times, were held to a tie twice and lost two hard fought battles to Catholic Central and the city title to Dearborn High. The gridmen showed their might in scoring 129 points but were most impressive defensively holding the opponents to 45 points. Included on the team were many eleventh graders who should help to build an even greater team next year. Traveling north, the Fordson Eleven opened the season against Bay City and came within three yards of victory but were turned back and held to a 0-0 tie. Returning home the gridders swamped a weak Monroe team 30-7 in their first Border City League Contest. Turning north again, the Tractors beat a large rough-tough Flint-Northern team 7-0. Still on the road Fordson tackled its arch rival Catholic Central and took its worst shellacking of the season 18-6. The Tractors snapped back and took the next three Border City tilts scoring 57 points and holding their opponents scoreless as they rolled over Highland Park 27-0, Royal Oak 13-0 and Grosse Pointe 27-0. Within one game of the league crown the Blue and Gold were held to a 13-13 tie by a strong Wyandotte Eleven. With keymen suffering from injuries the gridmen entered the city title tilt against Dearborn, the under-dog for the first time in history and came out losing by the extra point 7-6. TRACTORS PROVE BASKETMAKERS Fordson Cagers won more than a majority of their games and lost the Border City Championship by one game. At the beginning of the deciding regionals, Fordson had won 4—lost 2 in the city league as also did Grosse Pointe, Wyandotte and Royal Oak. The Tractors won over Royal Oak and Lincoln Park which left only Ford Trade in the running for the class A teams. The fateful score for Fordson was four points lagging behind the Crafts- men giving them 25 to the Tractors 21 and also giving the champion- ship. The team played a hard season but showed great sportsmanship for their fellow team members, opponents and for their coach. 91 Tom Saidock Ron Banish Bob Edick FORDSON CAGERS DROP Tom Saidock positions himself for a scoring shot. He rated third place in scoring points with a total of 82. Tom did a splendid job as pivotman—always on the alert. Ron Banish, making a free shot, prides himself with a total of 86 points made this season, coming in second place. Ron covered the forward position with fine sportsmanship and fast playing. Bob Edick makes a fast catch on a play to score a basket for the cagers. When Bob plays, there’s plenty of action. A FEW IN THE BUCKET Jim Allie, one of the five on the first team, played guard for the Tractors with intelligence and drive. He did a terrific job of watch- ing “his man.” Chet Poch, also another first-string man, played his guard position with typical “Fordson Spirit.” Much is expected of him and Allie next year. Norb Dittmar showed remarkable skill as a forward this season. He will also be back next year for a bigger and better basketball term. Jim Allie Chet Ploch Norb Dittmar RACKETEERS 94 Although tennis competition was resumed only two years ago, Mr. Beddow has high hopes of winning the Border City League Cup this year with seven return- ing lettermen from last year’s team. Starting from scratch two years ago, Mr. Bed- dow has encouraged lOBs on the team. This has been the cause of pre- vious defeats and low standings, but this year the profits were reaped. With the tennis season almost over the new team members have known great results. Hampered by rain, wind, and early spring floods, the racketeers have come through their season suc- cessfully. Great things will be expected next year from the experi- enced squad members. Dave Allen and Fritz Tripanoff after a hard practice game. Back Row: Rosol. TRACTOR NATATORS Mr. Kazulusky returning to his old job of swimming coach produced a good swimming team this season. Although finishing fourth in the Border City League, Fordson had many standout swimmers. Frank Alexander swam both the fifty and hundred yard free style and usually came up a double winner. He placed sixth in the state meet. Jim Ronchetto was a consistent winner in the back stroke and swam a leg in the 150 yard medley. The 200 yard free style medley did well all season and took third place in the meet, the highest of any Fordson swimming rec- ord this year. THINCLADS CAPTURE LEAGUE CROWN With fourteen returning lettermen bolstering the track team, the squad crushed all oppo- sition. Mr. Kazlusky again took over the track team resuming his old role coaching the track events and Mr. Savage handling the field events. In the individual events, Bernie Miller and Joe Suarez were steady winners in the shot put. Joe Suarez has officially broke the old school record with a mighty heave of forty eight feet and five, three-quarters inches . . . Leo Sarkany took all the honors in the mile. Hylan Moore, half-miler, was feared by all Border City Leaguers. Dave Shepherd and Jack Dunsworth were each four event men. They both run the high and low hurdles. Jack is dependable in the pole vault and Shephard in the broad jump. Each runs a lap at the 580 relay. This year a new medley relay was run. Four men were in the event. The Tractor Thin- clads captured both the Border City League Crown and the Regional meet. Kopekein, Shepherd, Morrison and Dunsworth all set for a fast hundred yard dash .... The Tractor nine played outstanding ball considering the lack of outdoor practice and bad weather conditions which greeted the early games of the playing season. Regulars in the line- up were: Norb Dittmar, catcher; Ray Wiacek, first base; George Alexander, second base; Ron Ban- ish, shortstop; Dick Isham, third base; Chet Ploch, left field; Vic Fassero, center field; and Chuck Bazzy, right field. The keystone combination of Ron Banish and George Alexander saved many runs with their breathtaking double plays. Strangely enough, with this combination the Tractors were ag- gressive in their play rather than defensive. Many a time a stolen base provided the winning margin in a close game. Supplying power at the plate with their long hits were Ray Wiacek, Victor Fassero, and Chet Ploch. These three sluggers supporting the ace pitching of Yarvin Movsessian, John Shwartz, and A1 Vecchionni combined to make Fordson rank as a top contender for the Border Cities League champion title.
