JiI JUA, diL cJ L JUNE 1946 FORDSON HIGH S C H O O L — D E A R B O R N, MICHIGAN U)fL (DodkcdsL T HE CLASS OF 1946 takes great pride in dedicating its yearbook to Dr. Harvey H. Lowrey—an honor wholly deserved and well earned. Superintendent Harvey H. Lowrey during nearly a quarter century of service to education in Fordson and Dearborn has eminently fulfilled the requirements of his chosen profession. The gains accrued to education in Dearborn include a realization of the im- portance of having such men at the helm. The schools under his direction have suc- ceeded in a masterly way because he is a man of strong, stern and worthy purpose whose skillful and sympathetic advice is ever sought. In his dealings he has demonstrated freedom from prejudice, hate and re- venge. A friend to all, whose affectionate and wise counsel is most helpful. He is never elated when anyone is hurt. After having given himself, for a half century, with courageous devotion and with scholarly skill to the important task of education Dr. Lowrey desires to be re- lieved of his accumulated responsibilities. J’LuakL J-LLghi. J'liqhL J Iic 6 J'lfudA n. in. ddjuHL Top left) Mr. Edmonson looks on approvingly as Laurabelle Fillmore works out a problem in one of the geometry classes. (Top right) Lorraine Sund- strum makes use of her training in office practice class by using one of the adding machines in the classroom. (Center) One of the most interesting phases of a clothing class is putting a dress together, a problem which Rose Tolocco and Lucy Jowett tackle quite easily. (Lower left) Perhaps a little difficult, but at any rate interesting, is the reaction which Nick Corpolongo portrays while attending a drafting class. (Lower right) Tom Johnson has the capable assistance of Mr. Parker while locating a currently popular location in the news, in one of the social science classes. 9 On, JhAouqpL - - (Upper left Who soys Fordson's students aren't enthusiastic about their homework? Hmmm? ? ? (Upper right) Chester Ploch and Tom Saidock, athletes themselves, are in- spired as they view athletic awards in Fordson's trophy case. (Lower left) Frances Panzoff, Louise Francavilla, Jane Ewing and Betty Ann Fede do their studying on the campus. ( Lower left) Girls aren't the only vain creatures. Proof of this is shown above: Jack Quinn takes his well-worn hairbrush through its daily workout. 10 -JhfL CDcu A typical occurrence in the halls of Fordson: (top left), Shirley Northrup comes gracefully to a landing after missing one of those stairs while two of her friends stand by helplessly. (Top right) A group of students, Barbara Garnett, Norma Turchan, Gene Shifter and Rita Karmann, view the bulletin board, engrossed in the events of the week. (Lower left) Gerry Wasilewski, Roger Harris, Jennie Pasternak, Pat Kline and Don Schoenrath take time off to read their seemingly interesting Tower Tribunes. (Center) Grace Sillars and Jo Zolin, seniors, smile sentimentally down from Fordson's banister as they realize that this con- cludes their— and many other seniors'—last year at Fordson. (Lower right) Five days a week, year in and year out, this scene is repeated. n (jib JhaditimwL (Upper left) Among the momentum of senior pictures and graduation gowns, there is the thrill of the class ring which denotes that “one has arrived. Dick Fahnestock, Jean Shotey, Ginny Strempka and John Barson are among the seniors who can't believe it. (Lower left) Honor comes to all—even to the photographers of this year's Fleur de Lis. Tom Nichols gallantly signs his name for appreciative Shirley Northrup, while Gene Shiffer stands by with his ever-ready camera. (Upper right) THE CRIME . . . Betty Ann Fede, a junior, takes of the forbidden fruit while unknown to her, Jo Zolin, a senior, has caught up with the cul- prit. (Center Right) THE PENALTY . . . Betty Ann discovers that crime does not pay. (Lower right) Donald SrulI goes through the discomfort of a Hi-Y initiation, while Leroy Anger, Eugene Lewandowski, and Sterling Bustteter smile gleefully. LEATRICE ALLEN THOMAS G. They were also partly responsible for the success of the senior play, Spring Green ' with their fine ad- vertising in collaboration with the June senior class officers. They planned the Senior Skip Day at Put-in-Bay with the June, 1945 class. Coats checked at the various school dances were under the supervision of the senior offi- cers. As their parting gift to the school the class left a sum of money which will be added to that contrib- uted by the June graduating class. Back row: Mary Lou Rafferty and Doris Hayes. Bottom row: Christine Giska, secretory; Ken Kiernan, president; Ray Goldsborough, vice president; Shirley Northrup, director. The June 1946 senior class officers had to accommodate one of the largest graduating classes in the history of Ford- son, 492 to be exact. It seems such a big task for such a limited group of seven. However, they handled their duties competently. They successfully raised money for the senior class fund with which to buy a parting gift for the school. This year a choice was put up to the seniors as to where they would hold their annual skip day. A unanimous de- cision was in favor of holding the skip day at Cedar Point on Monday, June 17, although there was an additional cost. Plans for the Senior Prom were begun as early as April by this active group. The date was set for Friday, June 21, the day after graduation. The scene of the prom was in the Crystal Ballroom of the Book Cadillac Hotel. The couples danced to the strains of Del Delbridge s orchestra. The evening was climaxed with the Grand March led by the class officers. Hard work on the part of all the officers tended toward making the prom a success. 25 JAMES J. ADAMS VIRGINIA F. The play centered around Newton Todd, played by Bill Brehm, whose main interest was collecting worms, and breeding them. He and his father come to live in the town where Major Todd (Dick Fahnestock) is stationed. They rent the apartment which Major Todd's old acquaintance, Mrs. Nina Cassell (Norma Pagnini) owns. Tony Cassell (Margaret Grisby) is in- trigued by the idea of having a boy around the house, and starts a campaign to impress Newt. However, upon hearing about his worms, she abruptly changes her mind. Since the worms create a nuisance around the house, Newt is ordered to rid himself of them. From there on in the complications oc- cur. Newton meets and becomes infatuated with Euia Hotchkiss, (Frances Van Sul I) but Eula pities him and would rather have the company of Dunk Doyle (James Steve). The highlight of the play centers around preparations for a dance. After considerable confusion . . . the turning point of the comedy is caused by Newton's worms, having suddenly become an asset to science . . . everyone is coupled, and all leave for the dance. Spring Green was under the most capa- ble direction of Miss Mary Lila Zang, dramatic coach. Other cast members were David Glenn, Lester Buckner, John Buchan, and Bob Hans. Solly Mackenzie, Norma Pagnini, Margery Martens, Dick Fahnestock, Bill Brehm, and Frances Von Sull in a scene from the play. Mary Ann Kulas watches skeptically while Sally Mackenzie, Margaret Grigsby, and Virginia Morgan give themselves a workout. Margery Mortens, Norma Pagnini, ond Paul Jones, enjoy their own conversation while James Steve holds the attention of Virginia Morgan and Margaret Grigsby. Coach Michael Savage was graduated from Fordson in 1932 after winning nine letters in football, basketball, and baseball. On the football field he won honors as all-state end. In bas- ketball he held scoring record which stood for years after he graduated. He then attended the University of Michigan where he again continued his high scholastic record and was outstanding in ath- letics. He received the Chicago Alumni Trophy which is awarded annually to the outstanding freshmen in spring practice. He had a berth on the undefeated U. of M. football team which won the National Championship in 1933. Three years he received letters for football and was named on the All-American team in that year. The Fordson football eleven ended the 1945 grid season with but eight points between them and an undefeated season. Catholic Central and River Rouge furnished Fordson with two heartbreaking losses that marred the Tractors excellent record. The Shamrocks won over Fordson for the first time in their history. The two previous games were won by Fordson 6-0 and 1 3-6. Behind 7-0, Fordson's opportunity came when John Stasevich recovered an Irish fum- ble on their own 18 yard line. Two passes thrown to Don Martin by Chuck Evans resulted in a score. A pass to Hank Przybylski from John Ewing was good for the extra point. But a penalty for offside brought the play back. The second try failed. River Rouge Panthers won 7-0 when Fordson failed to score from the six yard line in the last quarter. Ties with Monroe, Wyandotte, and Grosse Pointe were also included in this nine game schedule. Head football coach Mike Savage was assisted by Russel Catherman, Ray Parker, Joe Fleming, Del Loranger, and Bill Webber. 95 JhsL SL ijJahhi iA, OAd d t Tom Johnson—Guard Did excellent job throughout the year, kicked off and attempted conversions. JitfudAOtL Track mentor Cady opened his spring practice in March with ninety boys getting in shape for the approaching season. Their first taste of competition was April 13 at the River Rouge invitational indoor track meet held at Ann Arbor. Although the entire team did not go, the backbone of the team was well repre- sented in this the largest indoor track meet held in the nation during 1946. Fordson thinclads took ten points in the contest, in which 21 Class A and 46 Class B, C, and D high schools competed. In their first scheduled meet on April 30, the track men ran over River Rouge as they walked away with the meet 70-34. They lost their first Border City League contest in the last event. Hazel Park fell easily in the Tractors third engagement. Monroe, Grosse Pointe, Dearborn, and Royal Oak remain as tough meets for the Fordson cindermen. In addition to these were the regionals on May 1 8 and the State meet at Lansing on the twenty-fifth. The Border City Sweepstakes trophy de- pends much on how well the track team can place in the league. Wyandotte has already turned back Fordson, and Monroe and Grosse Pointe have tough outfits to beat. Upper—Mayo Arndt takes a high hurdle. Below—Mike Waypa and Norbert Kopeikin at start of the 100 yard dash. 106 JPibvdajcbu In the 120 yd. high hurdles and 200 yd. low hurdles Cady uses Mayo Arndt, Dave Shep- erd, Jack Dunworth, and Tom Saidock. Mike Waypa, Norbert Kopekin, Albert Cadry, Larry Morrison, and Leland Cross, are used in the 100 and 200 yard dashes. The quartermile or 440 uses Ted Spohn, Wm. Thorne, and Chas. Bazzy. The two trips around the track are made by Fred Little, Jim Campbell, Bernie Boyle, Joe Tardiff, and Carl Kosmer in the 880 . The mile has Leo Sarkony, Hylan Moore, Richard Nodeau, and Jack Armstrong. The field events feature Bernie Miller, Joe Suarez, and Sterling Bustetter at the shot put. Arndt, Ted Carzon, Jack Steggles, and Dunworth in the pole vault. Chuck Dubas, Bustetter, Arndt, and Emil Puliek are the high jumpers while Merle Garner, Ted Ceckiewiz and Cadry broad jumps. For their first game on April 16, Coach Del Loranger called on his seven returning letter winners: Don Martin, Bob Miller, Norm Tomas- sini, Carl Land, Ronnie Banish, Herman Schwartz, and Ernie Stratton. In addi- tion to these regulars were added the names of John Buchan, Stas Motyka, Ray Wiacek, and John Tobin. With a very satisfactory outlook the Tractor nine with the bulk of the team composed of 1945 Dearborn Class “D” city and state champs opened their sea- son with all-1 smashing of Henry Ford Trade School. Next in line was River Rouge who fell 8-3. Then came Crosse Pointe and a 12-3 victory. Hazel Park followed bowing 4-1 to the Fordson powerhouse. Monroe and Wyandotte broke the winning streak each stopping Fordson 2-1 in extra innings. In these games the Norm Tomassini (top) and Bob Miller, Fordson's oce hurlers ore the best in the league. 108 (Ja, (pAomiA jd, batters hit the ball hard but the re- sults were long outs. The prospect from here on in looks good as Miller and Tomassini pitching only allowed nine runs in the six games played thus far. Martin and Tobin have handled the backstop duties very capably. The infield is the hardest hitting in the league. It looks very promising that they could cap- ture the remaining eleven games. At the time of this writing the power at the plate is filled by the shoes of Schwartz, Tobin, Martin, and Lanci. But Banish, Buchan, and Stratton are starting to hit as the heavy end should. Besides the regulars Bill John- stone is at third, George Alexander at second, Don Bloc at first, and Al Vick- iony and Bud Sweeney are on the mound. lBaMbcdL Jsucwl Third Row — Sweeney, Tomassini, Ditmar, Ban- ish, Tobin. The powerful up and coming re- serve squad, who throughout the season lost but one game to the other reserve squads, shows a promising future for next year’s varsity team. The Grosse Pointe five were the only players that could better their baskets. Stout, smooth and accurate shooting were the high points of the well-balanced team. The Varsity five achieved the pin- nacle of success last season by taking the Border Cities League Basketball championship ... They topped twelve of the fifteen opponents in the number of baskets dropped through the hoop. Smooth working, well-balanced in agil- ity, and very versatile in ability were the active qualities of the 46 Basketball Varsity Squad. To become a member of the N.H.S. one must have at least a B average and must belong to a required num- ber of organizations within the school. During the past year the club became inactive for a few months, but it is again functioning as formerly. The first National Honor Society was founded in 1921 for the purpose of stimulating the scholarship, leadership, service and charac- ter of students. There are now more than 2,700 senior chapters and 300 junior chapters in the schools of the United States. The objec- tive of the club has become that of raising the schools to a higher plane. The sponsor of Fordson's chapter is Miss Hilda Horny. 118 JPua, 9a, SdwnJL Fordson is ranked as one of the best high schools of the United States. The design of the building is that of the English Renaissance mansions of the sixteenth century. It was built in 1927 at the cost of $1,946,000. Its fine architecture, beautiful campus and complete educational facilities serve to administer the pur- pose of studies and school activities. Two of the school’s main features are its fine auditorium and its library. The auditorium has a seating capacity of 1,420. The library with its brass chande- liers and mullioned windows is styled after the early English mansions. Fordson’s stadium seats approxi- mately 4,000 and overlooks the play- ing field in the rear of the school. The publications office is a contin- uous scene of bustling activity. Here the school paper, “The Tower Tribune,” is edited. It is printed in the school shop. The trophy room contains many trophies, one of which is the shovel which broke the ground of Fordson High School on April 19, 1926. At the head of the main stairs on the stained windows is a replica of the crest of the class rings. It resem- bles the architecture of the building, which is designed in accordance with heraldic laws. Three flowers of the “fleur de I is” represent high intellect, hand skill, and bodily vigor. These are the factors that make up your school, and Fordsonites can really be proud of it! 119 J'lsLUA, dsL Editor-in-Chief ......... Xa. Stag , Beverly Ryia Assistant Co-Editors ...................
