gy TRACK And they're off. ln the Highlander's Invitational in Hamilton, Ontario Coach O'Connor showed highlights of things to come in the future of Fordham track. O'Connor took only seven men to this meet and yet brought back one first, two seconds, and one very close fourth place finish. ln the Quantico Relays the two mile relay team surprised all with a record breaking time. The following week the team came back to pile thirty-three points to finish second in the Queens-Iona meet. This was the highest score any Fordham team had achieved for a long time. With visits by many foreign track stars to this country, the Rams of Fordham decided to get some of that publicity and did so by scor- ing impressive wins in several meets. ln the Knights of Columbus meet the one mile relay team was iust edged by St. John's. However in doing so, the team recorded the fastest clock- ing in the Garden in Fordham's history. ln the Metropolitan championships Frank Tomeo took the l,OOO yard run while Doug Tynan took the 600. ln the same meet the two mile relay team of McAloon, Riordan, Garcia and Kenney set a new meet record. Ed Kohler and John Murphy consistently drew points for the Rams in the shot and weight divisions. Tom Kenney breaks tape for Rams. Soph Don O'Connor prepares to overtake Jasper. Dionede, N. O'Donohue. CROSS COUNTRY Coach Arthur O'Connor's inexperienced and green cross country squad did much more than was expected by most on Rose Hill. The team was composed almost entirely of sopho- mores, with only three iuniors and no seniors running through the fields. ln their first meet against Seton Hall the Rams finished in a blanket finish as six Rams iaunted across the finish line. The Rams in their next meet knocked off Rhode Island as Don O'Connor finished sec- ond and Garcia and O'Donohue tied for third. ln the lC4A's meet Fordham finished ele- venth in a field of 43 schools. O'Connor and Garcia placed thirty and thirty-first in the meet. Close behind for the Rams were Diomede, Ken- ney, McGeady and Carmine Del Grosso. ln the Metropolitan championships Fordham finished third behind Manhattan and St. John's. Again Don O'Connor led the Rams with Charlie Garcia a close second. The frosh cross country squad also brought a faint ray of hope for the future as they were impressive in the lC4A's. SAILING Led by Commodore John Terino, the sailing team finished a good season after taking Hof- stra and Cooper Union in their first meet. The Rams had all their returning skippers including Mike Carr and Ron Castro. Dave McCarthy and AI Bates who were also on last year's team helped pace the squad. The seniors were hard pressed for top slot by Jim Colgan who took two tirsts and a second in the Ram's open- ing regatta. For the season opening March 25, Mike Carr, a iunior in the School of Business was elected as Commodore and also as president of the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association.
