Melvin gets ready to snatch ball, ,X Wait till next year may very well be the Senior forward John Samansky . , answer to this years basketball squad. Al- though John Bach had several returning letter- men including Captain John Coalmon, Dee 3 Redmen can't stop Coalmo Maynard and John Samonsky, he had only to rely on the untested sophs of last season's her- alded frosh squad. The loss of Frank Cipriani to pro baseball gave the young coach one less backcourt man to work with. Bob Melvin, Bill Sheridan and Bob Lawry had to come through. And come through they did. They provided an additional spark to a take-it-easy team. Bob Melvin provided a scoring punch which made the Rams a team to be reckoned with. The elig- ibility of Sy Coalmon in January provided the men of Rose Hill with much needed height and some good outside shooting. Senior Ray Mc- Govern returned to the squad and took over as the field general of the rambunctious Rams. A leg injury to iunior Joe Dempsey did nothing to aid the team and so the team played much on inexperience and heart. But the brilliant play of sophomore Bob Melvin did much to bring great hope for the future. Melvin was also awarded the honor of being elected to the All- Metropolitan Team which numbered All-Ameri- can Tony Jackson of St. John's. The Rams opened their l96O-6l season against the Elis of Yale. Before an enthusiastic opening crowd of two thousand the men of Rose Hill trounced the Elis 7l-ol. The lead changed hands several times in the beginning of the game, but John Coalmon and Ray Mc- Govern on pairs of foul shots, put the lead per- manently into the hands of the Rams. The fine

shooting of John Coalmon and Bob Melvin with fifteen and twenty points respectively was re- sponsible tor the first win of the season. Next the Rams traveled to Rhode Island and there picked up the second win of the young season. The squad fought an uphill battle all the way and shook off a ten point deficit to defeat the New Englanders 86-79 in overtime. McGovern's two clutch foul shots put the game into overtime and the Rams scored twelve points in this period to wrap up the game. Bob Melvin led all scorers with thirty points. On December l4, Villanova crushed the Ram win skein 92-54. The Wildcat oltense proved to be too powerful for the Fordham five. At the half Villanova led 39-28, and from this point the game ceased to be a contest. The outclassed Rams only scored on 2670 of their shots. Playing DePauw almost resulted in another fatality for the Roms, as the careless Fordham five beat the classy but poor tigers 78-72. Mel- vin had twenty seven points. Traveling to San Francisco over the Christ- mas holidays the Rams lost three squeakers in the Coast tournament. The Rams bowed to St. Mary's 75-74, Loyola 68-62, and College of the Pacific 56-54. The referees appeared to aid the home teams and Fordham got the short --nv ior cen er ee a nur . -ara.. 4 K. J Soph Sy Coalman lays it up for two more. end. Remaining on the coast, Stanford got their licks as they beat the ailing Rams 59-44. Returning home with four straight losses, the Bachmen knocked off the Orangemen of Syra- cuse 54-48 but then blew a heartbreaker in overtime to the Black Knights of West Point 66-61 . Ellis can only look on as Coalmon hooks for score.
