MULRY COUNCIL OF DEBATE The Mulry Council of Debate seeks to de- velope well-poised, self-assured, logical and ar- ticulate speakers. Under the guidance of the Moderator, Dr. Joseph R. Sherlock, the club adopted a program to achieve this obiective. The national topic which was analyzed and de- bated by Mulry Council both intra and inter- collegiately was Resolved that the United States should adopt a program of compulsory health insurance for all citizens. At the weekly intercollegiate debates, each of the members offers a critical analysis of his fellow teammates which proves to be invalu- able in preparing for the intercollegiate de- bates. The Brooklyn College Debate Tourna- ment with more than fifty colleges and univer- sities competing was the debating highlight of the year, and the Mulry Debaters fared excep- tionally well in this tournament. GANNDN DEBATE SOCIETY This year witnessed the revival of the Gan- non Debate Society on campus when a group of students ioined forces under the guidance of Professor Richard Sexton to adopt a new flexible constitution and elect officers. A strong support was immediately evidenced. Following in the tradition of the past the group commenced its program by orientating its members in the skills and techniques of pub- lic speaking and argumentation. Plans were drawn to compete in oratorical combat among themselves and eventually into other collegiate contests. An active year was enioyed. Because of a conflict with a name similarity in the School of Education, the group drew a charter at the termination of the academic year to be officially called The Hogan Debate So- ciety, effective with the commencement of the T961 Fall semester.

Lynch. 172 uv.-,..u,, 4 The philosophy of the Shealy Council ot Debate is that not only must a businessman be a good entrepreneur, he must also be an exemplary citizen. Part of this duty of citizen- ship is to be well informed on those topics which are of major importance to our society and which are controversial. By entering into debate on these topics the members of Shealy Council are better able to appreciate the is- sues and form a personal conclusion based upon the transfer of ideas and the logical elim- ination ot impracticalities. Shealy Council is an active debate organiza- tion. Among its adversaries this past year have been such intellectual meccas as West Point, Queens College, University of Rochester, Lady- clitt College, Union College, Hunter College and Brooklyn Polytech. When one considers the tact that all members of the Shealy Council are night students, it is easily ascertained that the business leaders of tomorrow are vitally and earnestly interested in the welfare and health ot our American society and are dedicated to the principles of democracy and fair play.
