' zz'-f- ci-3'3vzr Dedication ln every field of endeavor there exists a mark of distinction, a material object, that which elevates the men of the profession to the pinnacle of their field. They have attained a position comparable to that of Alexander. There no longer remain for them any new worlds to conquer or barricades to hurdle. ln reality they have arrived at the site of their greatest triumph. These hon- ored few, by virtue of their laborious efforts, can look back at a very mem- orable yesterday, and forward toward a glorious tomorrow. Here within the walls of Fordham such a man is taken and distinguished by the university body with the title Bene Merentif' We have sought a man- ner in which to thank these men who have dedicated twenty years of their lives to the service of God and man at Fordham. Courageously speaking out against those who decry the educational processes, they have persevered and triumphed over man's timeless foes, intolerance and ignorance. It can truly be said that Fordham's motto, Sapientia et Doctrine has remained uppermost in the minds of these men. Having sacrificed both self advancement and worldly gain, they remain as members of a sacred circle, guiding our minds and foot- steps toward a better tomorrow. For these individuals, 'molders of men,' we signalize the honor Bene Merentif' Through this symbol we convey to them, in the deep imprint of gold, our admiration and respect. for their efforts. On this medal is inscribed the majestic laurel, the wreath of victory which borders the center figure of two courageous lions holding the urn of life over the purifying fires of knowledge. Certainly, so long as there remains in our world a sense of dedication and idealism, this flame will never grow dim, but will brightly burn for all to see in the ages to come. lt is indeed unfortunate that we cannot honor these men, dedicated toilers for the humanities, every day of their lives, for they richly deserve such recognition. As a token and outward expression of our appreciation it is to them that we dedicate this our l959 Aries. Bene Mere11ti 'als-ff-CQQW' ii 7 ,iii . l l 4' I -, 559 . ., .z . Growth . . . Achievement The character of a university cannot be determined by either its ivy mantled buildings or its green rolling campus. A university may be rich in both of these outward signs but void of any inner spiritual force. Yet here at Fordham both of these necessary factors have merged to build a school within a school - The School of Business within Fordham University. The noise of the roaring carefree twenties heralded the arrival of our school. Untouched by the fanaticism of the era, the school sent forth waves of light from the towering Woolworth Building. Here, within this gigantic sky- scraper, ethics and Christian philosophy were given precedence over stock market manipulation and other practices familiar to the times. Recognition was given to the needs of the inner man as well as his social counterpart. The depression struck! The gleam and glitter of the previous era having worn away produced a greyness and a dimming reality with which many were unable to cope. Yet, through this period of despair and economic disaster, Fordham remained unscathed and continued expounding the ideals of a Jesuit education. The depression passed, yet there were no cheers, for in its wake followed its bloody partner, War. Future executives of the business world became an integral part of a fighting machine. Fordham grew smaller, but it'was a small- ness in size only. Its spirit strove ever forward to educate the remaining few to the value of truth and justice. Growing both in age and size the School of Business moved on through the war years. Our new home remained on the fringes of Wall Street with the opening of our City Hall Division. While the sharp din of the ticker tape swirled about us., the school continued to fulfill its obligation to society. The world finally realized its long sought goal--peace. With tranquility returned Man's insatiable quest for knowledge. Fordham again expanded. Reidy Hall, once echoing the heavy tramp of the military boot, now reverber- ated voices debating principles of finance, philosophy, and theology. Crossing the campus was our next move and Dealy Hall became the new home of our educational effort. A new building, an advanced and expanded curriculum-all designed to produce able graduates, came into operation. This newness was yet deeply imbued with the ever present spirit of Fordham, the enduring inspiration of our campus. The Student Faculty Center and the Lincoln Square' project are our an- swers to the demands of the era in which we live. Advancement is not merely an objective possessed by the non-academic world, rather it is a firmly advo- cated and implemented principle here at the School of Business. Our activities, the finishing link in molding the man, will be housed within the modern facade of the Student Faculty Center. Within Lincoln Square, the School of Business will offer modern facilities never before available at a Fordham-in-town center. At this physically magnificent plant, with all the provisions of the best in con- temporary school design, the soul will be guided by the same ageless Christian principles that have vitalized Fordham University for the past one hundred and eighteen years. In our era, as in the past, Fordham will stand for the Christian values so sorely needed in the modern business world. 7
