Captain J. Fenwick, Coach J. Sulger, Coxswain E. Collins. ROWING As you drive along the winding Shore Road in Pelham and look out over the sparkling water of Long Island Sound, you can usually see the shells of the Fordham Crew as they race along during practice. Stop the car a moment and you will notice Coach Jack Sulger directing practice and put- ting the high spirited oarsmen through their paces. There is nothing more exciting than.'the thrill ot a race when months ot practice sud- denly pay off. The teams approach the start- ing line and the crew members are tense, awaiting the starting gun. Suddenly they are oft, eight oars stroke the water at the same instant and the long conditioning shows its effect. Win or lose there is a tremendous feeiing ot accomplishment associated with this sport, Crew gets into your blood despite all the exertion it requires. Last year, the hard working team, without G. Boran, J. McCarton, W. Cassidy, T. Shea, E. Collins, D. Sarka, E. Millett, J. Lanning, J. Fenwick. W FENCING Destined tor greener pastures in l958, the Fordham Fencing Team managed to overcome its financial and manpower difficulties, and can now boast ot an eighteen man team. The interest in Fencing has steadily increased since its inception in l956, and under the competent coaching ot Mr. Peter O'Connor, the team is beginning to blossom out and gain maturity. To assist Coach O'Connor in his work is the teamls captain, Murray Lieber, who has brought his teammates closer together and enkindled in them a fine sense ot sportsman- ship. Since a team must operate as one and not as a multitude ot individual personalities, but does, however, depend on one or even several outstanding members, let us not forget Juan Cam, who astonished his opponents with sud- den bursts ot speed and energy once he had foil in hand, or Tom Feher, the epee whiz, whose patience invariably broke down the op- position, and finally let us turn the limelight on lvan Csete, whose saber thrusts and cuts ruled the fencing strip. Front Row: P. Hardy, D. Moore, Back Row: Capt. Cave, Moderator, T. Bell, J. Conroy, P. Cecere, F. Komornik, MfSgt. Lillie, Coach. The sharpshooters! RIFLE Hampered this year not only by the usual loss of graduating senior members ot last year's team but also by the loss ot two junior varsity members, the Fordham Ramrods fought vali- ently to keep the team standing near the top where it has been tor the past several years. However, it seems that the loss ot these experi- enced personnel has proved detrimental to the team record. Since this year's Co-Captains, Don Moore and Pete Hardy, are the only vet- teran members ot last year's Varsity squad, the team lacks the experience necessary to be a top power in the Rifle League. ln spite ot the present lack of success, the team does have a great amount of potential and with a little sea- soning will soon be bringing the laurels back to Fordham. The team has won only two ot the eight matches fired so far, but it expects to add mostly victories to its record in the remaining nine contests. Right now, the team is busily preparing itself for the National Champion- ships in hope ot bringing the trophy back to Ram Land. Much ot the team's improvement during the year was due to the excellent instruction and guidance of its new coach, MfSgt. Albert Lillie USA. Joe Murphy, Frank Komornick, Pete Cecere, Jim Conroy and John Kalben round out the nucleus of the team's ettorts. Tony Bell, Pete Johnson, Gerald Fitzpatrick and Garry Lash have been tiring scores ot Varsity caliber and will compliment next year's Coach and pupils, 207 Maroon squad.
