SWIMMING Moe Shea taking the lead. Jack Hayman away out front. And they' re off! The Mermen, in a total of eleven dual meets, never had more than seven men on hand to defend the honor of Ramland. Despite this handicap the team ended up with 'a win- ning record of 6 wins over 5 losses. The season started in early December with a 53-33 victory over Loyola of Baltimore, last year's Mid-Atlantic Conference champs. The win was offset by a final relay loss to Rutgers. Then the Fordham Fish rolled up three vic- tories over Hunter, City, and Seton l-lall. ln a trip to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, the team suffered its worst defeat, and two of the Big Three , Jack l-laymen and Caesar Cirigliano, lost their first races of the season while Drury Gallagher, Eastern Collegiate l500 Meter Champ, pushed his two year collegiate record to over 50 consecutive wins. After losses to KingsPoint, where Gallagher broke his own 440 yard freestyle record, and to Columbia, where he missed that pool record by six-tenths of a second, the team dunked Manhattan, and then Brooklyn College at the Rose I-lill pool. The season ended with a loss to perennial rival, N.Y.U., where Gallagher set two new pool records for the 440 yard and 220 yard freestyle events. , I i Do we need this win, Coach? With a particularly tough schedule, and the loss ot their two top men by way ot graduation last year, the Ram Mariners knew the seas would be rough. However, the returning letter- men and some newly added talent duplicated the efforts of the '58 squad or went on to even greater victory. Varsity returnees 'lCommodore Al Hotz, and Ed Hill were led by Ken Schattner and Larry Martin to many impressive victories over St, Joe's, Penn, Fort Schuyler, Webb, and others. Schattner tor the second straight time won the eliminations to compete in the single handed Monotype Championships. individual honors go to Jay Fitzgerald who set a new Fordham record for the most points scored in a single meet-a total of l lO in the War Memorial Regatta. For their continuously outstanding perform- ances the team has been selected this spring to represent the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association at M.l.T., in the Boston Dinghy Cup Regatta, and at Michigan in the Spring Invitational Regatta. wi-'iw ,.
