Ram loss to Manhattan 73-64 to end the regular season. John Andariese scored 2l and 22 in these games. And then it was NIT night, with the Fordham five drawing the Butler Bulldogs in the first round. It looked as if two pro teams were playing on the Madison Square Garden hardwood as the half ended in a 54-54 deadlock, both teams shooting over 601, from the floor. The Rams later cooled off but Butler didn't with Fordham winding up on the short end of a 94-80 score. Pat O'Donnell was high in the game with 24 points, all in the first half. The loss in the NIT closed out one of the finest seasons in Rose Hill history. The starting team all wound up scoring in double figures. Captain John Brady, who became the third highest scorer in Ford- ham's history, led the team with a l7.5 DDQ average. l-le was followed by John Andariese with l6 ppg. Ed DeGroat with i2 ppg, Pat O'Donnell lO.5 ppg and John Coalman lO ppg. Reserves John Samonsky and Frank Ascione gave the team the lift it needed turn- ing in some fine relief work. l 197 W g :--'Q . ff 53, ' ' . ' fi' 1 W I? . . TRACK A powerful one and two mile relay team were the foundation pillars of strength forthe i959 edition of Coach Artie O'Conner's track team. The mile relay which took a first place in the Millrose Meet consisted of: Bob Furphy and Kip Jones, both sophomores who alter- nated the difficult lead off leg, Paul Bopko, co-captain of the team who has been running consistently good times for the quarter during the last three yearsg Brian Condon, a junior powerhouse, who has run the 440 in 47 seconds, and Tom Brennan, the other co- captain who alternated during the year between the quarter and half mile. While running 47.5 for the quarter he has also hit in the low l.56's for the half. The two mile relay having been ridden with injuries during most of the season, neverthe- less, has come up with some real good races. John Machleil, one of the chief mainstays of the team, handled the lead off leg without any difficultyf Jim McMahon, a sophomore in the School of Business, gave the team a consistent l 257 leg. The rest of the team consisted of: Tom Kearns, a junior who although injured during the indoor season, nevertheless has run well in both the 880 and the mileg Don Luisi, the junior flash, who has run the mile in 4:l5, and Wally Cooper, another junior sen- sation, whose two mile time equals the best in the East.
