BASKET The l7-8 record compiled by the i958-59 Fordham basketball team surprised just about every- body, including coach Johnny Bach. This was a team that showed how teamwork and spirit can over- come a lack of height and scoring punch. The Rams won their first three by rolling over Roanoke 93-50, Rhode Island 86-56, and Yale 84- 59 before they lost their first game to the Purple Eagles of Niagara by a 63-52 count. The Ram cagers rebounded by upsetting a tough Syracuse quintet 80-75, as Pat O'Donnell scored five foul shots in the closing minutes to keep the Bachmen on top. Warming up for the Carrousel games, Columbia was next added to the win column going under to the tune of an 88-73 defeat. lt was now tournament time and the Rose Hillers journeyed to Charlotte, N.C. to meet the Don Hennon-led Pitt Panthers in the first round. Ford- ham won this 85-76 as Captain John Brady poured 36 points through the hoop. ln an exciting second round the Rams met the towering George Washing- ton Colonials and won in overtime 70-67, with Ed DeGroat scoring l8 points in the closing minutes. John Coalman BALL point deficit in the last ten minutes of the game. Before returning home the team dropped a 74-63 decision to the Huskies of Connecticut. The Rams then reeled ott a quartet ot victories over LIU 86-52, Army 80-69, Wagner 93-67, and Seton Hall 793-693 they then dropped two in suc- cession to Adelphi 8l-69, and Georgetown 79-70. CCNY was the next victim ot Ram wrath as the Beavers tell 89-50. ln what was unquestionably one of the most exciting games ever played on Rose Hill, Fordham clashed with the Redmen of St. John's. With cap- tain Brady scoring 26, including his l000th point as a Fordham cager, and Ed DeGroat scoring l9, the Rams won a 79-77 overtime thriller, and re- ceived a bid to the NlT on the strength ot this vic- tory. The cagers celebrated by edging Canisius 66-62 and dumping Detroit 93-73. The Detroit victory gave the Rams an undefeated season on the home court. Rutgers tell in overtime 79-72 with the Ford- ham tive picking up their sixth win in a row and longest winning streak ot the season. NYU stopped the streak, 69-59.
