BASKET The l7-8 record compiled by the i958-59 Fordham basketball team surprised just about every- body, including coach Johnny Bach. This was a team that showed how teamwork and spirit can over- come a lack of height and scoring punch. The Rams won their first three by rolling over Roanoke 93-50, Rhode Island 86-56, and Yale 84- 59 before they lost their first game to the Purple Eagles of Niagara by a 63-52 count. The Ram cagers rebounded by upsetting a tough Syracuse quintet 80-75, as Pat O'Donnell scored five foul shots in the closing minutes to keep the Bachmen on top. Warming up for the Carrousel games, Columbia was next added to the win column going under to the tune of an 88-73 defeat. lt was now tournament time and the Rose Hillers journeyed to Charlotte, N.C. to meet the Don Hennon-led Pitt Panthers in the first round. Ford- ham won this 85-76 as Captain John Brady poured 36 points through the hoop. ln an exciting second round the Rams met the towering George Washing- ton Colonials and won in overtime 70-67, with Ed DeGroat scoring l8 points in the closing minutes.
