A Loyola meeting. The Loyola Business Club had a very successful and active year under the direction of Robert L. Koerner, the club moderator. The primary purpose of the organization is to acquaint students with the career opportunities in the various fields of industry and business. To accomplish this end, guest speakers were invited to address the group. Such companies as the Advertising Federation of America, Burroughs, l.B.M., J. C. Penny, Westinghouse and a host of others, were represented by speakers who addressed the group. Besides those mentioned, many corporations, trade associations, and employment agencies also sent most Business Club A Christ Drakopoulos President informative representatives to address the members of the club. During the second semester we incorporated a program of specific interest and value to the Freshman class, in order to give them an understanding of the major studies offered at Fordham. The chairman of the respective school departments were contracted and asked to address the freshmen on the particular values of and requirements for the field of study they represented. This year's program not only made the meeting more interesting, but proved beneficial to the members who will someday take their place in world of commerce. Front Row: H. Meschi, J. O'Mai1ia. Business Club The O'Mailia Business Club, for many years, has been a source of information on current business topics. Members are addressed at the bi- weekly meetings by leaders in commerce and industry who answer questions and discuss matters of interest to students. Guest speakers are usually former Fordham students who 'have made their mark in the business world. Often, movies are shown and demonstrations given in order to keep the student abreast of current events, and at least once a year, a field trip to some large company is held. 1 Among the guest speakers this year was Mr. John Sheridan, Director of the General Accounting Department at American Machine and Foundry Corporation, who spoke on the mergers-and subsequent growth of his company over the past ten years. The Club was also honored by the appearance, as speaker, of Benedict T. Harter, Controller for American Cable and Radio Corporation. Mr. Harter, who is chairman of the Board of Governors of the School of Business Alumni Association, spoke on the Fordham reputation in the business world and the benefits to be reaped by Fordham graduates, based on that reputation. As is the custom, both speakers lectured for thirty minutes and held a fifteen minute question and answer period. 'SW ll .nr- 'T' JJ Front Row: P. Everich, D. Berry J. McDermott, A. Herold, J. X' The Mulry Council of Debate, the ,City Hall's Division of the Debating Society, has as its purpose a twofold objective. lts first aim is to further the school's participation in official intercollegiate debating activities. The second aim concerns itself with efforts to aid the poor or mediocre speaker to at- tain a higher level of oral expression. The important events in the Mul-ry calendar are the club's participation in intercollegiate debates and the annual Mulry Dinner. The most important debating activity is the Brooklyn College Debating Tournament, held late in March, in which fifty universities and colleges keenly compete for top awards. The Mulry Council of Debate has always maintained a fine showing in this debate. The debating academic year is brought to a fitting close by the annual Mulry Dinner at which stu- dents, alumni and faculty enjoy a fine dinner speech delivered by a friend of Mulry. The regular weekly meetings of Mulry provide adequate opportunities whereby the members' speech and debating techniques can be corrected and improved. ln addition, these meetings enable the members to discuss among themselves current events and topics of national interest. Directing the program for the year, Dr. Sherlock, the moderator, together with Ken Meeker, president, Charlie Walsh, vice president, ,loan Polito, secretary, and Sheila King, treasurer, did a fine job of planning and coordinating the en- tire year's program.
