Growth . . . Achievement The character of a university cannot be determined by either its ivy mantled buildings or its green rolling campus. A university may be rich in both of these outward signs but void of any inner spiritual force. Yet here at Fordham both of these necessary factors have merged to build a school within a school - The School of Business within Fordham University. The noise of the roaring carefree twenties heralded the arrival of our school. Untouched by the fanaticism of the era, the school sent forth waves of light from the towering Woolworth Building. Here, within this gigantic sky- scraper, ethics and Christian philosophy were given precedence over stock market manipulation and other practices familiar to the times. Recognition was given to the needs of the inner man as well as his social counterpart. The depression struck! The gleam and glitter of the previous era having worn away produced a greyness and a dimming reality with which many were unable to cope. Yet, through this period of despair and economic disaster, Fordham remained unscathed and continued expounding the ideals of a Jesuit education. The depression passed, yet there were no cheers, for in its wake followed its bloody partner, War. Future executives of the business world became an integral part of a fighting machine. Fordham grew smaller, but it'was a small- ness in size only. Its spirit strove ever forward to educate the remaining few to the value of truth and justice. Growing both in age and size the School of Business moved on through the war years. Our new home remained on the fringes of Wall Street with the opening of our City Hall Division. While the sharp din of the ticker tape swirled about us., the school continued to fulfill its obligation to society. The world finally realized its long sought goal--peace. With tranquility returned Man's insatiable quest for knowledge. Fordham again expanded. Reidy Hall, once echoing the heavy tramp of the military boot, now reverber- ated voices debating principles of finance, philosophy, and theology. Crossing the campus was our next move and Dealy Hall became the new home of our educational effort. A new building, an advanced and expanded curriculum-all designed to produce able graduates, came into operation. This newness was yet deeply imbued with the ever present spirit of Fordham, the enduring inspiration of our campus. The Student Faculty Center and the Lincoln Square' project are our an- swers to the demands of the era in which we live. Advancement is not merely an objective possessed by the non-academic world, rather it is a firmly advo- cated and implemented principle here at the School of Business. Our activities, the finishing link in molding the man, will be housed within the modern facade of the Student Faculty Center. Within Lincoln Square, the School of Business will offer modern facilities never before available at a Fordham-in-town center. At this physically magnificent plant, with all the provisions of the best in con- temporary school design, the soul will be guided by the same ageless Christian principles that have vitalized Fordham University for the past one hundred and eighteen years. In our era, as in the past, Fordham will stand for the Christian values so sorely needed in the modern business world. 7
