The season opened wtih a romp over Roanoke and three nights later met 'Maryland, eventual winner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. 'The Terps had an 8 pt. lead wth 1:2 minutes to go but at this point Ed DeGroat entered the game and-ignited a comeback which tied the score with two minutes to play. Here Bach ordered a freeze for-the last shot but this backfired and the Terps took a 61-58 decision. A visit to New Haven earned the Maroon a 81-80 win over Yale, and in a final tune-up for the Big YVestern swing the Bachmen walloped Rhode Island. The stage was now set for the make or break invasion of the VVest. VVith Jimbo pump- ing 34 the Rams gave Xavier of Ohio, rated no. 11, quite a battle but lost 85-82. A horendous performance against the Dayton Flyers. followed with the Maroon scoring 9 for 47 from the field as Dayton walked to a 64-35 victory. Led by Cunningham with 30 and Brady 29 the Bachmen bounced back to give Detroit a run for its money but it was not enough and Fordham dropped no. 8 in a row, 83-79. Returning home, the boys started oif the new year with a 103-79 pasting of Columbia. Jimbo C341 and Bill McCadney C27J led in point production. Against Syracuse, Brady and Cunningham combined to lead the way, in a close one, 81-79. Coming back to Rose Hill, the Rams were stymied by an Adelphi squad which played possession ball and threw up a tough zone. Midway through the second half, however, Cunningham began to find the range and Fordham shot into the lead for -good. Jimbo led the way with 20, before his home town folks as the Rams easily conquered Canisius 58-48, for their fourth in a row. The confident Rams looked forward to. an- other-'victory as the Vikings of N.Y.U. came to Rose Hill. However the Violets had other ideas, and with Cal Ramsey and Tom Sanders sweeping the boards and' pouring the points through and without the force of Howard Cann. They gave Fordham followers a real jolt as they walked off with a 90-73 verdict. At this point, the up and down Rams came through with a fine. performance against Con- necticut, Winners of the Yankee Conference. The first half ended with a 33 all tie and in the second half the Bachmen led by Jimbo and McCadney ran the Huskies off the court as they rolled to an 86-70 victory. --,..-94 ------50 Fordham ..... ..... 8 1 Yale ..... ..... 8 0 Dayton ...... ....... 6 5 Fordham .... .... Q 35 A tough game with little Providence College saw the Rams win a squeaker 54-52 in over- time. The string was extended' to three as Georgetown and C.C.N.Y. were defeated. The Purple Eagles of Niagara, fresh from a win over St. Iohn's swept in and were met by a determined Ram five. With Bill McCadney outplaying the vaunted Boo Elliz' and Cun- ningham and Brady hitting well the Rams held an eight point lead with five to go. At this point the Eagles came up with a rush 'and sent the game into overtime and won going away 88-81. In a tune-up for St. I0hn's Jimbo hit 50 as the N.Y.A,C. fell 111-62. Against St. John's, the Rams lost the game in the first half as Alan Seiden scored at will off Don Altomare and the Iohnnies built up a 5oLa5 lead at half time. The Rams came back in the second half but the bulge was too great to erase, and Fordham dropped it. 82-74. Now it was time for the Bachmen to run off another streak of three against Army, Seton Hall and Rutgers. Since the 111 points scored against the N.Y.,-LC. is not officially counted, the Maroon set a New Rose Hill scoring record in clobbering the Scarlet 107-78. In the annual battle of the Bronx, before a screamingunob of over 4,000 the Rams played a great first half and looked- like sure winners. But in the second stanza, the Jaspers led by Bob Mealy came back to overhaul the Rams and win 69-67. Now it was N.I.T. time and the Rams faced the tourney dark horse,.St. Francis of Loretto in the first round. The Frankie first team averaged 6' 4 and the Rams weren't'given much of a chance. 'The boys from Rose Hill soori showed the experts how wrong they were and with a great five man performance swept the Frankies off the court 83-59. Jimbo hit for 28 and 10 assists. Bill McCadney grabbed 17 big reboundsg Johnnie Brady hit for 23 and was consistently ballhawkingg and soph John Andariese hit for 16 and helped Big Bill under the boards. Soph Pat 0,Donnell quarterbacked this fine team effort, himself contributing 7 rebounds. ' Following the big win, Fordham faced top- seeded Dayton in quarter-finals and played enough to win. Very poor foul shooting 114 for 29D lost this one for the Rams. Two Met products Don Lane, and' Frank Case did most of the damage for the Flyers with 21 and 26 points respectively. Jimbo, playing his last game in Fordham livery scored 25, but it was not enough. This season saw Cunningham wind up his College career with 1744 points to break Ed Conlin's old four year trnark. Fordham will surely miss both Cunningham, winner of the Haggerty Award and Bill McCadney, eighth in the country in rebounds, next year. - NATIONAL' INVITATIONAL TOURNIEY Fordham .....
