. ramkin fordham preparatory school new york city caesar adams anthony guida co-editors paul cucchi business editor wilfred marrin sports editor dedication Producing a yearbook is many things. It is troubled, worried hours, laughter, companionship, and the sweet joy of completion. The Ramkin is now thirty years old and no matter where the yearbook office has been situated, the refrain of success and failure, joy and disappointment has been repeated over and over through all those years. We, the thirtieth staff of this an- nual, cannot put away our lay-outs and unused pictures without thinking of all those who came before us. What were they like then? What are they like now? We don’t know all these men but we salute them, the thirty years of staffs who have labored to present Fordham Prep to the world. We dedi- cate this anniversary issue to them and-in a magnificent moment of self- effacement—to us, the staff of the 1959 issue of the Ramkin of Fordham Prep. 3 m requiescat in pace 0 Shepherd who guided and protected us He hath matched three with thine hour And awakened three from sleeping. Death to some a darkness, To thee a new born light of praise. We may raise our prayers and offerings for thee, But perhaps it is thine to intervene for us. Did the beckoning angel not hesitate ‘Fore he called thee away from thine? When final death has laid waste the spoils of time, “And when the Prince of Pastors shall appear, You shall receive a never fading crown of glory.” (Peter. 5:4) Richard Neville, ’59 4 VERY REVEREND LAURENCE J. Bruce Bott 134 Bill Garrity Ass't. Coach Mike Conway Tom Finneran Jay Larkin Chet Grzanka Ted Palatucci Dick Herzing VARSITY FOOTBALL John Acampora JOSEPH OSOSKI. Coach Journal-American Coach of the Year Jack Del Negro 135 Pete Roche Johnny Scarpelli Behind Bott’s passing and the fleet-footed running of Lar- kin, Conway, and Finneran, the Prep football team opened its ’58 season on a winning note with a 39-0 trouncing of an inexperienced LaSalle team at Coffey field. The Prep line with many of its members making their varsity debut bot- tled up the Cadets’ running attack with ease. Del kicks off to begin another fine season. Larkin is free as Ref runs interference. Bott is surrounded but still flips to Conway for T.D. RAMS 39 LA SALLE 0 RAMS 26 B’KLYN PREP This one helped Tom average 54 yards. Chet’s T.D. hut where is the other hand? The Rams took the road and completely befuddled the Eagles of Brooklyn Prep by a slashing running game. Twice Grzanka leapt into the air to snare Bott’s passes for T.D.s. Roche recovered two fumbles while Acampora, Del Negro, and Herzing were standouts with their line play. It’s a T.D. but this doesn’t help digestion. 137 The St. Mary’s game at Greenwich was defi- nitely Finneran’s game as he ran and kicked the Ramlets to a 30-0 triumph. Larkin’s elu- sive running and Conway’s jarring tackles were the highlights as the team continued their winning ways. Leaving a trail of frustration behind. RAMS 30 ST. MARY 0 It takes more than three to stop Tom. Crazy legs” Larkin off to the races. Come on. Hair, bull dog this one. The F.P.-Iona football rivalry was renewed after an interval of several years, and, unfortunately for Iona, they came out on the short end of a 34-0 mauling by the little Rams. Again it was Larkin who did most of the scoring, as co-captain Del Negro and Acampora led the hard charging Prep line. The little Rams were still un- scored upon at this point of the season while scoring 129 points. Mike Conway on a straight dive. RAMS 34 Take it easy boys. Tom moves alone. IONA 0 It was wet, the ball was slip| ery and . . . All good things had to come to an end, and so did the Prep's fine record when they met the Holy Cross Knights. Mantana of Holy Cross ran and passed his team to a muddy 30-0 vic- tory, thereby revenging the 35- 6 shellacking suffered the pre- vious year. RAMS 0 HOLY CROSS 30 Hand off carefully. Bruce. Jay sees a hole. We did stop them this time. They are rushing but they are too late. After playing to frustrating ties for two years in a row with Seton Hall, the Rams unleashed a hard-driving ground attack to bury the Long Islandites under a 48-12 avalanche. Fordham’s offense was led by Larkin with three T.D.S, tallies by Bott and Conway, and Finneran’s 91 yard run. RAMS 48 SETON HALL 12 RAMS 7 XAVIER 6 To the victors belong the spoils. The city’s oldest rivalry was continued in the annual “Tur- key Day” classic as the Prep pulled out a squeaker over an aggressive Xavier team, 7-6. John Larkin, awarded the Ma- dow trophy as the most valu- able player of the game, scored the deciding touchdown with Conway converting. With this game, the Prep closed out an- other successful season, as six- teen Seniors donned their cleats for the last time for Fordham and Coach Ososki. 142 Kaydet dives. V arsity 144 Basketball The 1958-59 season opened in the Ford- ham gym with the Prep dropping a close game to Du Bois, but we knew that this year’s team had the spark that would ignite a terrific season. Mgr. McClancy was the first victim to fall before the jump- shots of Tierney, Philbin and Co. Then we moved to Brooklyn and in a tight over- time struggle against Brooklyn Prep, Jack Geraghty’s eight straight points tied up the score and enabled Fordham Prep to take the day. Coach John N. Sullivan Jim Tierney Co-Capt. Carl Lanzano Co-Capt. Paul Philbin Stretch. Bob. stretch! 146 One, two. three, KICK! During the Christmas holidays, the Ramlets ended St. Agnes’s winning streak by winning the opening round of the St. Agnes Tourna- ment, 47-41. We bowed to Regis in the closing seconds of the finals. Brooklyn once again fell victims to the Prep in the semi-finals of the Jesuit Tournament. Tiemey and Philbin led the scorers. In the finals, a strong, fast St. Peter’s team swept through and won the title. Later, the Prep played host to a visiting McQuaid Jesuit High team from Rochester and made the home town fans happy with a 61-45 victory. Paul Prisinzano Atlas’ world collapses Holy Cross came to our gym with plans to win but the Prep changed that. We won the game and avenged an earlier defeat. Philbin led the scorers with 30, his high for the season. Travel- ing to Cardinal Hayes to meet Cathedral, the Prep encount- ered a tough attack. Fighting all the way, with Suchy re- bounding and Philbin scoring, the Prep bested the Cathedral- ites, 60-49. The basket, not the birdie. The party’s over, it’s time to call it a day. 147 Returning home, we handed a strong Xavier team a round defeat as our fabulous five com- bined to hold the opposition in check. Tierney led the scorers and Suchy the rebounders. A strong New Rochelle team came and left the little Rams with a 53-40 defeat. This year saw the renewal of an old rivalry with Tolentine. The Prep started slowly and then pulled out to finish up with a 69-52 win. Jack Geraghty Pas de deux and Carl rings up two. 148 Next, the base of operations was moved to 84th Street and there the Prep juggernaut com- pletely destroyed the Owls, 75-38. The Prep defense baffled the Regis team as Tierney, Phil- bin, Suchy, Prisinzano all hit for double figures. The rolling Rams next overwhelmed McClancy with Lanzano playing one of his best games defensively. Philbin, Tiemey and Suchy led the point getters. Moving into the Xavier band box, the Prep was ready for a real battle. With a careful com- bination of rebounding, shooting, and passing, the Prep won a thriller by three points. Corky Lahey Tierney draws a bead for two. Iona Prep fell to the smooth- ly-geared Prep attack as Sul- livan’s boys moved with pre- cision and Philbin scored 27 points on the Iona court. From the tips of the fingers to 2 more points. Back in their own back yard, the Prep circled the Jesuit Round-Robin championship by downing Brooklyn Prep for the third time, 51-48. The first annual Family Night at the Prep was a huge success as the Owls of Regis fell to a highly spirited Prep attack. The game was marked by the outstanding defensive work of Lan- zano, Prisinzano, and Geraghty. Up, up, and away! That's doing it the hard way. Jump Jim—for two! With the season behind them and on their record, the little Rams were invited to the Iona Tournament. In the opening round, the Prep met a tough Rice team and battled to a 65-58 victory, making a new school record of eight straight wins. Paul Philbin scored 20 points in this game. Who has the answer? Ouch! In the quarter-finals of the Iona tournament, the Prep met a strong Power team and, de- spite a well-fought game, lost the game, 55-45. And, with this, closed out a very successful 16-8 season.
