None exemplifies the tenacious attitude of USS FORD better then the ships helo maintenance crew. An indispensable part of the Fords fighting capability is its helo and the men who keep it flying. In the blistering heat of the Persian Gulf to the angry seas of the Pacific be them mechs, avionic techs, metal smith, maintenance, admin, electricians or ASW equipment op- erators have proven no one or job more important than the others and by Working as a team have shown a tenacity that few could hope to match. VIATIO DEP RTMEN HSL-47 DET 3 provides the only stand off ASW capabilities onboard USS FORD. Saberhawk 68 along with her technicians and flight crews are able to prosecute submarines up to 125 miles from the ship with both acoustic and non-acoustic sensors. ln addition, the aircraft accomplishes surface surveillance acting as the eyes of the ship looking hundreds of miles around the ship during each mission. Saberhawk 68 has also performed VERTREP missions supplying the supply ship Willamette with groceries, in support of the Helena crisis, and during the inchop into the Arabian CPersianJ Gulf. The air det's greatest accomplishment to date has been keeping the aircraft up during the hellish conditions of the Arabian Gulf while performing intelligence missions and special operations. Keeping the aircraft up had an additional benefit, it allowed us to stay in the NPG for most of the cruise, thereby staying within three days of MAIL at all times. R if ,Nfph
