ciooz LT JoE BRUENNING CS-1 Division is responsible for the opera tion and safe navigation of the ship during peacetime steaming, exercises, Anti-Sub marine, Anti-Air, and Anti-Surface War fare scenarios. CS-1 division contains two work centers, CSO1 and CSO2. CSO1 has 20 Operation Specialists whose job is to operate the radars and radio circuits re quired to track, display, evaluate and dis seminate all surface subsurface and air contacts. They also perform duties of backup navigator. CSO2 contains the Electronic Warfare Technicians whose job is to evaluate electronic emissions and to classify them into air, surface and subsur- face contacts which they can further clas- sify into type, country, and threat. COMBAT SYSTE S The combat system comprises all of the Ford's subsystems and equipment associated with detection, evaluation, acquisition and engagement or deception of enemy air, surface or sub- surface threats. The combat systems officer reports to the com- manding officer for matters concerning the tactical employ- ment and operational readiness of the combat systems and the need for, or progress of, repairs and maintenance. The success of this deployment and the safe return of all of Ford's officers and crew were the direct result of many long and arduous hours of effort by the 65 men comprising the combat systems depart- ment. I am proud to have been a part of this team. - CSO. General Mission. The mission of FFG 7 is to provide local area protection to underway replenishment groups, amphibious groups, and other military shipping against subsurface, air, and surface threats, as Well as antiair Warfare QAAWJ, antisurface warfare CASUWJ, and antisubmarine warfare CASWD self-de- fense.
