Mr. Gutshall and Mrs. Hummel, for being our class advisors. Through the years you’ve always been there when we needed help. You’ve weathered our class meetings, survived our fund raisers, and handled the many other “details” known to few but appreciated by the entire class. Without you we would not have been able to accomplish the many things that have made our years here at Forbes Road High School so Memorable. Thank You for Everything, Your Senior Class □□B □□□ DEDICATION We the Senior Class of 1988 are dedicating our yearbook to Mr. Fleck. Mr. Fleck is a graduate of Southern Hunt- ingdon High School. While at Southern Hunt- ingdon, Mr. Fleck was active in student coun- cil, drama club, and served as his class president. He received an award in mathe- matics for achieving the highest 4-year av- erage in mathematics. He attended Shippen- sburg State College and graduated after a three year accelerated program. He has done grad- uate work at Shippensburg as well. With over twenty years of service here at Forbes Road, Mr. Fleck has taught math for almost this entire time, filled an administra- tive post as active high school principle for a year and has served as advisor to several class- es. He has been a leader in curriculum reform in his department, innovating a unique and very popular Consumer-Vocational Math course, and working toward implementation of computers within the curriculum. Hobbies include hunting and gardening. He resides with his wife, Carolyn, two sons, Ash- ley and Corey, and daughter, Robin, in Three Springs, where he has been a life-long res- ident. Over the years you have not been satisfied to just teach us the facts and figures. You have taught us to think carefully, reason thorough- ly, and to apply the knowledge we’ve attained. Whether you used apples and oranges or rab- bits and hounds, you always made sure that we understood what you were talking about. We have gained greatly from your instruc- tion and hope that in some small way you too have gained something from our class togeth- er. I will because I must.” — Mack Bolan “Weep not that the world changes — did it keep a stable, changeless state, it were cause indeed to weep.” — William Cullen Bryant “Look abroad through Nature’s range. Nature’s mighty law is change.” — Robert Burns “Take from me the hope that I can change the future, and you will send me mad.” — Israel Zangwill A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog when you are just as hungry as the dog.” — Jack London “We do all stand in the front ranks of the battle every moment of our lives; where there is a brave man there is the thickest of the fight, and there the post of honor.” — Henry David Thoreau “Unless one comes to an understanding concerning the nature of Change, one will have many difficulties.” — Plato “The possibility of victory by the dark forces stands as black as night. Fierce as ten thousand furies, terrible as Hell. Yet I am not afraid to admit my fear. Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear — not absence of fear.” — Mack Bolan “To thine own self be true.” — William Shakespeare “Stand with anybody that stands right, stand with him while he is right and part with him when he goes wrong.” — Abraham Lincoln “Every human being whom we approach should be the better for us.” — William Ellery Channing “To work out our life problems, we need to add love, subtract hate, multiply good, and divide between truth and error.” — Janet T. Coleman • “Technology does not improve the quality of life; it improves the quantity of things. Improving the quality of life requires the application of wisdom.” — Neil A. I can, and I will, because I must. For every action there is a reaction, for every evil a good, for every weakness a strength — and for every injustice there is somewhere a final justice.” — Mack Bolan There is a destiny that makes us brothers, None goes his way alone; All that we send into the lives of others comes back into our own.” — Edwin Markham He who waits to do a great deal of good at once will never do any.” — Samuel Johnson “The courage we desire and prize is not the courage to die decently but to live manfully.” — Thomas Carlyle “Violence and brutality are not the same. Only a man of courage will know the difference.” — Mack Bolan “Be noble! And the nobleness that lies in other men, sleeping, but never dead, will rise in majesty to meet thine own.” — James Russell Lowell “If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom; and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that too.” — Somerset Maugham Believe me, every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad.” — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow “Truth fears no trial.” — Thomas Fuller, Gnomologica “Justice is truth in action.” — Joseph Joubert, Pensees “The habit of viewing things cheerfully, and thinking about life hopefully, may be made to ow up in us like any other •bit-” — Samuel Smiles We should be as generous with a man as we are with a picture, which we always give the benefit of the best possible light.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson “Bear your own burdens first; after that try to help carry those of other people.” — George Washington Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together. — Goethe “Hold it the greatest wrong to prefer life to nonor and for the sake of life to lose the reason for living.” — Juvenal “He has honor if he holds himself to an ideal of conduct though it is inconvenient, unprofitable, or dangerous to do so.” — Walter Lippmann “Honor is actually a physical thing — the heart to Know what’s right, the guts to do what's right, and the muscle to back it up. ’ — Mack Bolan The measure of a man's life is the well-spending of it, and not the length.” — Plutarch “Man when perfected, is the best of animals, but when separated from law and justice, he is the worst of all.” — Aristotle “The secret of life is not to do what one likes, but to try to like that which one has to do; and one does like it — in time.” — Dinah Mulock Craik “I have no other ambition so great as that of being truly esteemed by my fellow-men, by rendering myself worthy of their esteem. — Abraham Lincoln “There is so much that is bad in the best of us. And so much that is good in the worst of us that it doesn’t behoove any of us to talk about the rest of us.” — Anonymous “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” — Henry David Thoreau “Life is short — too short to get everything. Choose you must, and as you choose, choose only the best — in friends, in books, in recreation, in everything.” — Anonymous “No real friendship is ever made without an initial clashing, which discloses the metal of each to each.” — David Grayson “Between friends there is no need for justice.” — Aristotle “Be not simply good: be good for something.” — Henry David Thoreau “CLUBS” They say that these are not the best of times But they’re the only times I’ve known. ADVISORS Before I begin my editorial I’d just like to mention that I have been advised to use discretion in the wording, content, and implications of this editorial. I have reluctantly complied. ‘‘I made it through those deadlines alive!” This year we were faced with 4 deadlines that had to be met or no spring yearbook. Frantically, as the day of the deadline readily ap- proached, pictures weren’t developed, layouts weren’t fin- ished, and arts were misplaced. But, somehow, we managed to make all the deadlines and got you this yearbook here by spring. This would never have happened if it weren’t for the dedicated yearbook staff members who gave up their free time to do “yearbook stuff.” My thanks and appreciation goes out to those staff members, you know who you are. If those words sounded familiar it’s because they were the opening to Aimee Jo Hann’s editorial in the 85-86 Cardinal yearbook, “The Final Flight.” They are just as true today for the 87-88 Cardinal Yearbook. This year we returned to the traditional title of “Cardinal. The theme this year, while found nowhere else in the book other than here, is “Dare To Be Different;” and different it is from cover to cover and everywhere in between. We chose, this year, to go sparce on words and opted to fill the book instead with pictures, pictures, and more pictures. Some local art, provided by Kristen Earley, Becky Purnell, Tom Hyle, Tony Jamison, and myself was thrown in for good measure. While not something I’d readily do again, there is little if anything that I’d change given the chance. A yearbook is supposed to be a reflection of the year, the people, and the events that made it unique and memorable. If I have failed in any of these tasks I truly am sorry. I have enjoyed what I have done and no matter what anyone says this is a publication to be proud of, I am. I’d like to extend a special thanks to my family, the Jamison family, Kristen Earley, and Ed Patrick Jr. for giving that “little” something extra. It really did make a difference and was well worth it. In closing I’d again like to quote from Aimee Jo Hann’s editorial. Being a yearbook editor, or for that matter a yearbook member, was no easy task. It tried your patience, ravelled your nerves, raised your blood pressure, and drove you insane. Then why suffer with such a demanding job? The finished product. When you look at the finished lay.out and then see it in the yearbook, you can take real pride in that page. A sense of accomplishment sets in, and it feels good. AMEN! 87-88 CARDINAL YEARBOOK EDITOR, David Joel Conners Future Farmers of America L-R, Front Row: Brian Helser. Rick Bookheimer. Jamie Knepper.
