My Another Country I came here in the United States at midnight August 28, 1985. It took 9 hours from Tokyo to San Francisco. My first impression of U.S.A. was much alike Japan. August 30, I went to Forbes Road High School for the first time. In the morning, after the principal’s speech, everyone stood up and listened to the national anthem. I was so surprised that. I was also surprised to see the students chew gum and eat chocolates during classes. In typing or English class, I sometimes saw the man who was teasing students. It seemed that he wasn’t either teacher or student. I asked Susan what he did, and she answered, ‘‘Nothing.” I was taught that he was one of former students, and he returned to visit, which made me most surprised. I think most of kids at Forbes Road are very nice. And I also think that teenagers all over the world act the same. For example, we used to stick a written paper on someone's back. I found that kids here do the same thing. The other day I went to the restaurant with my American family. After I ate dinner, Mrs. Curfman asked me, “Are you ready for ice cream?” But I didn’t order one, so I asked her why she said that kind of thing. She explained that in that restaurant we could have salad, ice cream, soft drinks many times free. That system of restaurant seems for me like heaven! I wish we had the same kind of restaurants in Japan. In here, when I'd like to go to someone to visit, I can’t go by myself. I need someone to pick me up. I think this is very inconvenient. In Japan, when I wanted to go somewhere all I had to do was to take buses, trains, or subways. When I bought goods here for the first time, saleswoman requested more money than I paid for at first. I thought that she was wrong. But soon I understood that were taxes. In here, when you go to restaurants, you have to leave a tip. But in Japan, we don’t have to. I think the price of records and tapes are a little cheaper than in Japan. And the price are different from records to records in United States, but in Japan, the prices are all the same. LP Albums — 2800 yen (12 dollars) EP records — 700 yen (about 3 dollars.) Anyway, I like the United States of America and American people. They are very open-minded. The United States is my another country because my family, my friends, my teachers, and other people who I met live there. Kanako Koseki 7 .1 i ft it nW -7n(W? P.S.
