Our graduation would not be complete if he were not included. This is our way of saying, “Byron, we think of you often. You are our friend and classmate!” A Friend A friend sees you for who you are, He is always near never far. Love and support he always shows, He always cares he always knows. The friendship is cherished through the years, Sharing the laughter and the tears. In my mtnd I always see, The friendship of you and me. M. A. K. 4 We the class of 1986 dedicate this to Kevin Hall, our former friend and classmate. This will enable our graduation to be complete in a sense. Kevin will always be a part of us. Heaven Only to find Forever, blest By thine encircling arm; Only to lie beyond unrest In passion's dreamy calm! Only to meet and never part, To sleep and never wake, — Heart unto heart and soul to soul, Dead for each other's sake. Martha Gilbert Dickinson Laughing Struggling Forgiving 6 T.G.I.F... . Thank “Goodness” ▲ It's Friday Mrs. Hummel, c'mon give us a break. ◄ I won't have time to take a shower tonight so . .. I'll just skip gym class, that way I won't be all smelly. ▼ Keith and Hayden look suspicious as they make plans. ▲ This is where the day begins, every day, day after day. ▲ You can tell by Chad's expres- sion, he's ready for the day to end. ▼ Rob and Myron, grabbing books to take home to study. But, who's the guy in the middle? It’s FRIDAY! ▼ If he only knew what was in store for him. ▲ Homeroom — waiting impatiently for the final bell. ► Shelley and Brian start celebrating early in the school parking lot. But, what are they celebrating with? FRIDAY 2:30 — The 8th period bell rings. Just 45 minutes more and free at last!!! 3:17 — The end of 8th period. Mass hysteria breaks loose. Hallways are terrorized by anxious students, grabbing their books, making plans, and getting on the bus headed for home. 3:25 — The halls suddenly become desperately quiet. They are left with basketball players, cheerleaders, and club members staying after school for practice. The teachers are also feeling the home itch. 3:30 — The school heaves a sigh of relief. Janitors come out of hibernation to sweep the halls and scrape off the toilet paper stuck to the top of the bathroom ceiling. 4:00 — Students are home, grabbing a snack and trying to catch a glimpse of their friends, Rick, Roxy, and Beth of the Guiding Light, but still anguished over the death of Lujack. 6:00 — The diversification of Friday night begins Stu- dent A spends her time socializing via the telephone. Student B is anxiously awaiting for his her date to pick them up. Student C is just getting home from practice and decides that a night out would be going a bit overboard. Student D is the partier who has waited all week for this night. Student E is obsessed with getting good grades and burns the midnight oil studying. 8:00 — At school all's quiet. The school can now safely and quietly rest until Monday. My Another Country I came here in the United States at midnight August 28, 1985. It took 9 hours from Tokyo to San Francisco. My first impression of U.S.A. was much alike Japan. August 30, I went to Forbes Road High School for the first time. In the morning, after the principal’s speech, everyone stood up and listened to the national anthem. I was so surprised that. I was also surprised to see the students chew gum and eat chocolates during classes. In typing or English class, I sometimes saw the man who was teasing students. It seemed that he wasn’t either teacher or student. I asked Susan what he did, and she answered, ‘‘Nothing.” I was taught that he was one of former students, and he returned to visit, which made me most surprised. I think most of kids at Forbes Road are very nice. And I also think that teenagers all over the world act the same. For example, we used to stick a written paper on someone's back. I found that kids here do the same thing. The other day I went to the restaurant with my American family. After I ate dinner, Mrs. Curfman asked me, “Are you ready for ice cream?” But I didn’t order one, so I asked her why she said that kind of thing. She explained that in that restaurant we could have salad, ice cream, soft drinks many times free. That system of restaurant seems for me like heaven! I wish we had the same kind of restaurants in Japan. In here, when I'd like to go to someone to visit, I can’t go by myself. I need someone to pick me up. I think this is very inconvenient. In Japan, when I wanted to go somewhere all I had to do was to take buses, trains, or subways. When I bought goods here for the first time, saleswoman requested more money than I paid for at first. I thought that she was wrong. But soon I understood that were taxes. In here, when you go to restaurants, you have to leave a tip. But in Japan, we don’t have to. I think the price of records and tapes are a little cheaper than in Japan. And the price are different from records to records in United States, but in Japan, the prices are all the same. LP Albums — 2800 yen (12 dollars) EP records — 700 yen (about 3 dollars.) Anyway, I like the United States of America and American people. They are very open-minded. The United States is my another country because my family, my friends, my teachers, and other people who I met live there. Kanako Koseki 7 .1 i ft it nW -7n(W? P.S. The United States of America is my another country. 10 Aimee if you would learn Japanese this would be a lot Kana is that your new boyfriend? easier to explain to you. Well, I have news for the unin- formed students of Forbes Road High. Suspension is a very boring expience. However it does have its exciting moments. All people that I know who have done time have done countless things to pass the time. I have, on occasion, weighed myself on the scales thousands of times, gone to the bathroom seven times in one hour, and claimed to have been sick so I could lie on the couch and crash. With all due respect, suspension is very hard. It makes you edgy, bored, and very, very tired. So .. . take some ad- vice — Be cool and stay in school! 59 You’ll have to get by us first, if you want these potato chips we’re guarding. Editor — Aimee Hann 60 61 -d I made it through those deadlines alive! This year we were faced with 4 deadlines that had to be met or no spring yearbook Frantically, as the day of the deadline readily ap proached. pictures weren't developed, layouts weren't finished, and arts were misplaced But. somehow, we managed to make all the deadlines and got you this year- book here by spring This would never have happened if it weren't for the dedicated yearbook staff members who gave up their free time to do yearbook stuff My thanks and appreciation goes out to those staff members This year we were faced with a tragedy One of our Head Honchos' . Mrs Komir. was leaving us Her help could never be replaced Well, fate set in and allowed our other advisor, Mrs Hummel, to step in and take over She took charge alright, and she was the key ingredient in pro- ducing this yearbook If it wasn't for Mrs Hummel's help and advice. I would have gone completely crazy So. Thanks. Mrs Hummel To replace Mrs Komir's creativity was Mrs Ranck, who proved to be an invaluable substitute Being a yearbook editor, or for that matter a yearbook member, was no easy task It tried your patience, ravelled your nerves, raised your blood pressure and drove you insane Then why suffer with such a demanding job9 The fin- ished product When you look at a finished layout and then see it in the yearbook, you can take real pride in that page A sense of accomplishment sets in. and it feels good Field Hockey ’85 Standing: Lisa Keebaugh; Coach, Sherri Black, Nicky Huston, Erika Barnett, Teressa Barnett, JoAnn Yet- ter, Aimee Jo Hann, Tina Gilbert, Missy Hall, Stacey Black, Michelle Hann, Michelle Huston, Maria Berkstresser, Mrs. Parsons; Head Coach. Is What We Fought For Field Hockey 1985 proved to be an even more exciting year our beginning year. Our number of team members increased and so did our record. In fact, our teams improved 400 percent. We ended the season with 4 wins, 4 loses, and 4 ties. We added another school to our list of competitions, and at the end of the season had participated in the Central Penn Field Hockey Play Day held at James Buchanan School. Aimee Hann made Forbes Road proud by being named to the Central Penn All-Star Team. Aimee was also named in Public Opi- nion's All-Star 2nd Team. Maria Berkstresser and Michelle Hann received honorable mention. Spectators as well as coaches and players could see a remarkable improvement in this year’s competition as well as a positive attitude to continue to improve in the sport of field hockey. CHEERLEADERS 66 Valerie, Michele, and Jane Cheerleading has its f’s and its j’s — just ask Lori! She had more than her share of J's and |'s during the big McConnellsburg game!! Being a cheerleader takes a lot of hard work. What your fans see out on the floor doesn’t come easy. It takes many hours of practice and some yelling and screaming along the way too! Cheerleading does carry one MAJOR reponsibility though — being a Guardian Angel. We believe the guys would die of starvation if we didn't stuff them full of junk food before and after each game. Moms out there — (especially those of Mike Hall and Chad Ritchey) maybe this is a sign that you just aren't providing those poor boys with enough nourishment. You should hear them carry on if they even suspect we've forgotten to bring them something! Being a Cheerleader could get to be pretty chaotic, but our ever faithful leader, Trudy Mort, manages (as best she can) to keep her troops in line!! Lady Cardinals basketball team proved to be a spectacular one indeed. Cove League, Sideling Hill League and District V, all posted their standing and each one had F.R. ranking at the top. The starting line-up consisted or oniy one senior and four juniors. The team fought hard los- ing to only a few teams. Karla and Aimee came on strong offensively. Tina and Mary were awesome defensively. This year the Cardinals were blessed with a strong bench consisting of two seniors, Donna and Sherri, Tammy — a junior, and a host of good J.V. players who saw some Varsity action — Missi, and Michelle H. Despite team conflicts throughout the year, the Cardinals had an outstanding winning season. Only when five play together can win- ning be achieved. What do you call poetry in motion? ... Forbes Road Boys’ Basketball team. When they got hot this year it was complete ecstacy to watch them. Their winning season tells all. They conquered great teams including McConnellsburg, Tussey Mountain, and Southern Fulton twice — even wearing their baseball socks during these outings. What empowers Forbes with such grace? The talents of each player on the floor — Chad, Boogie, Mike, Todd, Jesse, Howard, and Phillip. The phrase bench warmers was used very infre- quently this year. The poise of all the players put that phrase to rest. Spirit Week was an attempt to inspire spirit in the students at Forbes. The theme was Beat McConnellsburg. Each day was represented with a certain dress-up day. Monday — Sweats Day Tuesday — 50’s Day Wednesday — Generic Day Thursday — Color Day Friday — Hat, Tie, and Shades Day Friday seemed to be the favorite with the students. Also, each class had a sec- tion of the hall to decorate — a competi- tion between classes. Needless to say the seniors won it, hands down. The in- dividual winners of Spirit Week were Erin Doyle (50’s Day), Michelle Fester (Generic Day), Chris Hann (Blue Gold Day), Mrs. Curfman (Red White Day). They didn On Thursday of Spirit Week, the Cheerleaders gave a pep rally. Both basketball teams came out on the floor doing layups. Tina Gilbert was so anxious she didn't wait for the boy’s team and went ahead and started without them. The two Varsity coaches each had a speech. Mr. Cutchall made us t have a chance — NO laugh when he introduced Mr. Hoover saying, “He may be smarter, but I’m better look- ing.” The coaches were confi- dent as they spoke and looked forward to victories. Seniors Mike Hall and Todd Strait had a few words to contribute. Todd predicted a win by 15 points, and Mike just wanted to know CONTEST!! Who is McConnellsburg?” The speeches ended and the pep rally proceeded with a class competition. “Hang it up Spartans, Hang it up!” was the cheer. The tradition broke this year. It wasn’t the seniors who won again, it was the 9th grade. Spartans Got Whomped Just Like The Rest... MKX)NNKLl-SBUK(i - Theresa Barnett sank a shot with 10 seconds left in overtime Thursday to lift the Forbes Road Cardinals to a 40-38 Sideling Hill and Cove League girls basketball victory' over the MeCon- nellsburg Spartans. “They had us down (in the fourth quarter) and we tied it when Mary Peck hit on a buzzer shot,” said McConnellsburg coach Audrey Hall. “They took the tap in over- time, but we scored first with De- anna Miller's foul shots. Aimee Mann tied it with about a minute left, then Harnett hit from the cor- ner of the foul line.” The Spartans shot 0-for-7 In overtime. The Spartans (13-2, 7-1 SIIL, 3-1 Cove) led 27-23 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Forbes bounced bac k by oulscoring them 13-9. Each team had 35 rebounds. McConnellsburg shot 25% (15-60) and the Cardinals hit 26.2% (17-65). “We had good shots, but just didn’t put them in,” said Hall. “1 think our foul shooting really hurt us,” said Forties coach Craig Cutchall, whose team hit just 6-of- 20 from the line. “Our ball-han- dling was really good; we had fewer turnovers (12-19) and I thought that was a big factor.” Karla Harnett led the Cardinals (12-4, 51 SIIL, 2-2 Cove) with 10 points, while Miller led the Spar- tans with 12 and Peck added 10. Miller also led on the boards with 17 rebounds, and Tina Gilbert grabbed nine for FK. Forbe RMd 0. McConiMlItburg 24 FORBES ROAD Mann 3 I 47 Cook 100 2. Tt ano 3 0 36._ icy rfiMOO’O Gilbert 2 2 t«.
