A LOOK Happenings ROCK VIDEOS, miniature three to five-minute movies that transform a song into a sight unexpected, have capti- vated our attention on cable's MTV Mu- sic Television and NBC’s Friday Night Videos. We found ourselves gasping at the explosive power of Def Leppard in Rock of Ages, laughing at Thomas Dolby’s zany images of a nutty professor in She Blinded Me with Science, and overwhelmed by Michael Jackson’s pas- sionate intensity as he prevents a gang rumble from taking place in Beat It, a video without actors but real, off-the- street gangs from the toughest neighbor- hoods of Los Angeles, 1984 a year of Presidential Election ... Walter Mondale, Gary Hart, and Jessie Jackson ran for the Democratic nomina- tion against President Reagan. The newest trends include EAR WRAPS — small earrings that clip on the side of the ear ... TUBBLE GUM — soft, squishy bubble gum that comes in a tube ... and SOAPS by PHONE, a service that provides 24-hour updates on every soap opera. Come on Feel the Noise by QUIET RIOT just one of the rock bands that made our days less boring. CULTURE CLUB the most popular group in Eng- land. led by vocalist BOY GEORGE (O'Dowd) set the fashion scene on its ear with his braided hair, painted eyes and lips. NUTRA SWEET, the substitute for su- gar, changed lives in our fitness-crazed life style. “Break dancing”, it all started when city street kids began performing fantastic athletic maneuvers to heavy sounds, spinning on their heads and shoulders, whirling on their hands or miming robot- like moves in the “electric boogie”. The 1984 OLYMPICS held in Los An- geles this summer... everything was the official something, except for the coun- tries that did not participate. This year

A LOOK AT 83-84 Happenings and Fads In 1948 George Orwell wrote a nov- el that is still being read in high schools today: 1984, a grim fantasty of tolalitarism, oppression, and dai- ly lives haunted by the rules of “dou- ble think,” fear of the Thought Po- lice, and the slogan “Big Brother is watching you.” Well, that fateful date has arrived and imperfect as we may find the world around us, we can thankfully say our 1984 is not the one George Orwell depicted. LOS ANGELES RAIDERS ... Last fall’s Super Bowl XVIII Champs. The newest taste sensation ... POP- CORN in all kinds of fantastic fla- vors, like watermelon, chocolate, rootbeer, pina colada, nacho, pizza, peanut, strawberry, and lime, just to name a few. GO AHEAD ... MAKE MY DAY — Clint Eastwood's words from Sud- den Impact just one of the great mov- ies of ’84, while TERMS OF EN- DEARMENT stole the show for best motion picture. CARE BEARS and CABBAGE PATCH KIDS. The Christmas toys for everyone this year. Our styles this year reflected the in- fluence of many noted rock stars. The cropped pants are a definite Michael Jackson trend! Far from home Europeans marched to protest AMERICAN ARMS. 11

AT 1984 and Fads the U.S. was involved overseas in the battle for GRENADA and in Lebanon For a while, it seemed that American armed forces could only stand still and take casualties. But then the 82nd Air- borne swooped down from the skies over the island of Grenada in what undoubt- edly would have been described as a text- book operation, if there had been any reporters along to witness it. Suffering only minimum losses, the 6000 Ameri- can troops overcame the surprisingly fierce Cuban resistance to retrieve the more than 600 American medical stu- dents who were stranded on the island. The Middle East was old news for Americans, but it suddenly seemed clos- er to home. U.S. Marines died in Beirut after a suicide attack on their headquar- ters, and 63 died in the earlier bombing of the U.S. Embassy. MICHAEL JACKSON’S Pepsi ads “YOUR A WHOLE NEW GENERA- TION” have changed the image of T.V. commercials, while his album Thriller has sold more than 25 million copies. You’re gonna get it with the KODAK DISC ... the newest type of camera to- day. JOAN RIVERS ... So good at replac- ing Johnny Carson during his many ab- sences, she was made permanent substi- tute. Now whenever Johnny’s off, Joan can talk (and talk). VIDEO YEARBOOKS ... Now found on a few college campuses, the “Year- book” is a 35-40 minute video that cap- tures the school year’s biggest moments. FLASHDANCER Jennifer Beals set a fashion trend in a ripped sweat shirt, while on Broadway a reunion of dancers from “A Chorus Line” filled the stage in honor of the longest-running show ever. EDDIE MURPHY — 84’s most versa- tile comedian. Who else could convinc- ingly portray personalities such as Mr. T. Velvet Jones, and Gumby?
