A prime influence upon our lives, we often forget to appreciate the efforts put forth by our teachers. We tend to take them for granted, seldom expressing our thanks for being teacher, person, and listener. We, the Class of 1984, wish to now express our appreciation and gratitude to Forbes Road business teacher, Cheryl Hummel. The expertise you bring to the classroom, the friendly smile with which you greet us, and the sympathetic personality that listens to us and offers advice when it is sought, are the factors which we admire in you. Thank-you for being a teacher who cares. Love, The Senior Class First Row: Lyncttc Sprowl, Sharon Emcrick, Star Ann Gallagher, Diane Henry. Second Row: Julie Chamberlain, Valerie Zitllc, Michele Newman, Dwayne Helman, Pam Crouse, Marcic Price, Rhonda Mort, Katherine Strait, Mrs. Komir. and Mrs. Hummel. YEARBOOK STAFF . . . lr ; PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER The 1984 Cardinal is as unique as the Class of 84! For the first time, our year- book is a reflection of the entire senior year â from the first day of school to the Big Day â Graduation! Through cooperation and dedication the staff and advisors have strived to por- tray the true picture of school life at Forbes. We have used the theme of mountains to symbolize the step by step climb of the seniors through their education. The lay- out design achieves this purpose as well. It is with pride that we the Yearbook Staff present to you the 1984 Cardinal. The Ups ... Life is full of memo- ries; good times and some times that are just better forgotten. Often, we find ourselves following the same routine, day in and day out. Other times, our lives are brightened with new faces and changing patterns. This year, Life at Forbes, was no exception. We had our ups and downs of high school, our old familiar ways and some new. The following pages are designated to remembering our school year as it was. Whatever was inadvertently missed, will always remain a part of our memories. Those crazy dress-up days The pride of a Cardinal The ingenuity to make our lockers âuniqueâ The assemblies that were interesting AND got us out of classes 6 ... The Downs 7 FORBES ROAD STUDENT MOTTO The more I study The more I know The more I know The more I forget The more I forget The less I know So, WHY STUDY??? 8 9 SCHOOL STUDENTS Four seniors attended Huntingdon Vo-Tech School ... The New ALMA MATER Midst the hills of Fulton County With her view so grand; Stands our noble Alma Mater Known throughout the land. Sing, O sing, ye youths and maidens, Let her praises rise; Crowned with majesty and honor Hail to Forbes Road High. âNeath the dome of heavenâs wonder, Proud she lifts her head, Mingled with the clouds of glory Flushed with victory red. Sing O sing, ye youths and maidens, Let her praises rise; Crowned with majesty and honor Hail to Forbes Road High. 10 A LOOK AT 83-84 Happenings and Fads In 1948 George Orwell wrote a nov- el that is still being read in high schools today: 1984, a grim fantasty of tolalitarism, oppression, and dai- ly lives haunted by the rules of âdou- ble think,â fear of the Thought Po- lice, and the slogan âBig Brother is watching you.â Well, that fateful date has arrived and imperfect as we may find the world around us, we can thankfully say our 1984 is not the one George Orwell depicted. LOS ANGELES RAIDERS ... Last fallâs Super Bowl XVIII Champs. The newest taste sensation ... POP- CORN in all kinds of fantastic fla- vors, like watermelon, chocolate, rootbeer, pina colada, nacho, pizza, peanut, strawberry, and lime, just to name a few. GO AHEAD ... MAKE MY DAY â Clint Eastwood's words from Sud- den Impact just one of the great mov- ies of â84, while TERMS OF EN- DEARMENT stole the show for best motion picture. CARE BEARS and CABBAGE PATCH KIDS. The Christmas toys for everyone this year. Our styles this year reflected the in- fluence of many noted rock stars. The cropped pants are a definite Michael Jackson trend! Far from home Europeans marched to protest AMERICAN ARMS. 11 A LOOK Happenings ROCK VIDEOS, miniature three to five-minute movies that transform a song into a sight unexpected, have capti- vated our attention on cable's MTV Mu- sic Television and NBCâs Friday Night Videos. We found ourselves gasping at the explosive power of Def Leppard in Rock of Ages, laughing at Thomas Dolbyâs zany images of a nutty professor in She Blinded Me with Science, and overwhelmed by Michael Jacksonâs pas- sionate intensity as he prevents a gang rumble from taking place in Beat It, a video without actors but real, off-the- street gangs from the toughest neighbor- hoods of Los Angeles, 1984 a year of Presidential Election ... Walter Mondale, Gary Hart, and Jessie Jackson ran for the Democratic nomina- tion against President Reagan. The newest trends include EAR WRAPS â small earrings that clip on the side of the ear ... TUBBLE GUM â soft, squishy bubble gum that comes in a tube ... and SOAPS by PHONE, a service that provides 24-hour updates on every soap opera. Come on Feel the Noise by QUIET RIOT just one of the rock bands that made our days less boring. CULTURE CLUB the most popular group in Eng- land. led by vocalist BOY GEORGE (O'Dowd) set the fashion scene on its ear with his braided hair, painted eyes and lips. NUTRA SWEET, the substitute for su- gar, changed lives in our fitness-crazed life style. âBreak dancingâ, it all started when city street kids began performing fantastic athletic maneuvers to heavy sounds, spinning on their heads and shoulders, whirling on their hands or miming robot- like moves in the âelectric boogieâ. The 1984 OLYMPICS held in Los An- geles this summer... everything was the official something, except for the coun- tries that did not participate. This year AT 1984 and Fads the U.S. was involved overseas in the battle for GRENADA and in Lebanon For a while, it seemed that American armed forces could only stand still and take casualties. But then the 82nd Air- borne swooped down from the skies over the island of Grenada in what undoubt- edly would have been described as a text- book operation, if there had been any reporters along to witness it. Suffering only minimum losses, the 6000 Ameri- can troops overcame the surprisingly fierce Cuban resistance to retrieve the more than 600 American medical stu- dents who were stranded on the island. The Middle East was old news for Americans, but it suddenly seemed clos- er to home. U.S. Marines died in Beirut after a suicide attack on their headquar- ters, and 63 died in the earlier bombing of the U.S. Embassy. MICHAEL JACKSONâS Pepsi ads âYOUR A WHOLE NEW GENERA- TIONâ have changed the image of T.V. commercials, while his album Thriller has sold more than 25 million copies. Youâre gonna get it with the KODAK DISC ... the newest type of camera to- day. JOAN RIVERS ... So good at replac- ing Johnny Carson during his many ab- sences, she was made permanent substi- tute. Now whenever Johnnyâs off, Joan can talk (and talk). VIDEO YEARBOOKS ... Now found on a few college campuses, the âYear- bookâ is a 35-40 minute video that cap- tures the school yearâs biggest moments. FLASHDANCER Jennifer Beals set a fashion trend in a ripped sweat shirt, while on Broadway a reunion of dancers from âA Chorus Lineâ filled the stage in honor of the longest-running show ever. EDDIE MURPHY â 84âs most versa- tile comedian. Who else could convinc- ingly portray personalities such as Mr. T. Velvet Jones, and Gumby? A LOOK AT 83-84 Happenings and Fads LACE WEIGHTS ... The newest craze for professional and amateur athletes. The weather our senior year was rough with one of the worst droughts in the SUMMER of '83 and a harsh WINTER setting graduation back 7 days, while the SPRING brought floods, volcanoes, tornadoes, and earthquakes to all parts of the world. In 1984 we are considered part of the COMPUTER REVOLUTION ... even Forbes Road had 7 comput- ers for student and faculty use. Two hundred and sixty-nine died when a Soviet fighter shot down a KOREAN airliner ... YURI AN- DROPOV was conspicuous in his ab- sence until Soviet Officials confirmed his death. The television mini series, THE DAY AFTER a graphic depiction of nucle- ar war drew 100 million viewers. Three California teens made national headlines after having their home computers siezed by federal officials when they gained access to secret government files. The fatal affliction known as AIDS, killed many but this spring, advance- ment was made. Nasa is still advancing in 84 with space shuttle Columbia and the first American woman in space ... Sally Ride. Fashion trends at Forbes included PUNK. PREPPIE, and NEW WAVE, and of course T-SHIRTS, LEVIS, and SNEAKERS. After twenty short years the entire nation paid tribute to President John F. Kennedy. 'T xo.vt fYimvi a-Kd Gt) uct oc| S ck Ujjk 4o i co. ljcu hao (g -k, avi orr H_xcrnenv, i cux ut ixa oJ cu in mny jjst J6puoJJU j cUU'. rv '' JX)( i aJto . UiGLi Sc na K-i jou v c v4hCd. We. the Class of 1984. will always cherish our yesterdays, especially the yesterdays that were spent as the Senior Class of Forbes Road. Our senior year w as a crossroad in life. The memories of yesterday will definitely be a part of each of us. Tomorrow , the memories will evolve into the dreams that each of us holds within us. The dreams will be as indi- vidual as each senior is. The fulfillment of these dreams is what we live for today. A part of us will always live in the Class of â84. 25 SENIOR Need a piece of gum? Ask Lisa Wright; she usually has a âbubbling supplyâ. Never at a loss for words, Shar- on Emerick and Pam Gilbert were the most talkative seniors. Our best artists, Julie Chamberlain and Paul Nally. were found doo- dling most of the time. Since their all-out effort helped lead their teams on to victory. Star Ann Gallagher and Jeff Grace were voted the most ath- letic seniors. 4 The friendly smiles of Jody Kncpper and Lonnie Henry will al- ways be remembered by their classmates. The biggest flirts were undoubtedly Lynette Sprowl and Robbcy Hockensmith. From McConnellsburg to Forbes . .. Joyce Stains. Rhonda Myers, and Lorraine Pool chose to graduate with PERSONALITIES The responsibilities that they held in high school paid off when Vlarcie Price and Ran- dy Brown were named most likely to succeed. Because of David Gartland's great com- puter ability, he'll be the next star on the Whiz Kids ! Michelle Johnston and Kevin Mellott had a contrasting difference in their height. Maria Kncpper and Trcasa Mellon take seriously the old saying, âItâs better to be seen than heardâ. The cheers and support of Rhonda Mort and Ronnie King won them the recognition of most school spirited! The wildest drivers, Todd Black and Dale Waite, always kept the roads hot. BW The funniest seniors, Sharon McGowan and Greg Barnett, bright- ened our days with their crazy antics. Wanna hear a good story? Just ask Ralph Dc- shong and Richard Duvall. Their certain knack for being mischievous, gave Bctina Swcger and Jeff Lcric the vote for most troublesome seniors. If there was anyone to find trouble, Robert Taylor and Mark Snyder usually found it. are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. We could always find Sheri Miller and Mike Bowser rebelling against the standard Forbes uniform of faded jeans and a t- shirt. The most bashful sen- iors were Ruth Fogal and Rickey Edwards. It takes two to argue. How 'bout it, Priscilla King and Lee Truax? 29 30 4xu Va u 4 âThe days that make us happy make us wise.â âBe kind to your friends. SENIORS SENIORS SENIORS Our Senior Year has been the final chapter for the Class of 84. We entered school with a feeling of anticipation â We were the Best! Senior pictures had been taken during the summer; they were beginning to be exchanged. Each of us groaned at the thought of having to sign another picture. We quickly settled into the routine familiarity of school life, yet there was a strangeness. We had waited so long for this moment and now each time for anything would be our last. Our financial state posed the question of whether we would or would not have a yearbook. To remedy this, we got busy with several fundraisers. Our hoagie sale was the biggest success. Donuts and M M's solved the munchies for everyone. Girls basketball ended as the boys season began. Suddenly it was time for pep rallies, spirit, and pride! Christmas vacation was a brief turning point. To many of us, it was the half-way mark. When we returned to school, we ordered our announcements and were measured for caps and gowns. Was it really time for graduation? With thoughts of graduation came the thought of the big decision â What follows graduation? Many of us took entrance physicals for the service or applied to schools in order to continue our education. Spirit Week was upon us. We proved we WERE the best by winning the competition! We now began to realize how important our friends were. So many things to do, yet time was flying! Prom time! No!! Not time for the prom, already? Plans had to be made â Who will 1 go with? What will I wear? Will it be (it just has to be!) the best prom ever? Finals ... The last tests that count so much! These were dreaded, but also looked forward to! After finals came the class trip where we had a great time! When we returned from the class trip, we began practicing for baccalaureate and commencement. So many memories â good times with our friends, walking down the ball, being late for class, not studying for a test, âcontinually forgettingâ to do that homework, talking to a teacher, sleeping in class, playing hooky, hearing the latest gossip, being sent to the office, attending assemblies, âtestingâ the substitute, snow days, jammed lockers, field trips, driving to school instead of taking the bus, being a senior! We close the final chapter with these memories. We have attended twelve long years of school. Come to think of it, they werenât so long after all. We must now leave the sheltered world of high school and step into the world of life. Class Advisors: vens and Mrs. Ste- Hoagics .. hoagics . .. ...and more hoagics! Kohr, Ricki Mellon. Iht Editorial from FR HS No Yearbook At Forbes In 1984! By SHERI MILLER The ForbesRoad Class of 1934 may be the first senior class to experience graduation without a yearbook Traditionally, the seniors are responsible for paying for the yearbook The apathy displayed by the seniors toward fund raisers during tbeir high school career has put the future of the 1984 Cardinal yearbook in jeopar- dy During tbeir five years in high school, the class of 1934 has had five different class advisers This, coupled with almost non - existent attempts to raise money has put the seniors deep into financial debt On the average, a yearbook costs approximately MMO. At the last class meeting, the senior class treasurer reported a total of less than 12000 in the treasury Major Undertaking At a larger school, a fund raiser ol 14000 would not raise any eyebrows, but with a total ol only 41 seniors it is s major undertaking In the past sales of any kind have been met with little enthusiasm and even less class participation As soon as the seniors become aware of their situa- tion this year, several sales were planned A doughnut sale was held immediately resulting in ihe sale of 413 doier. Much discussion has been beid concerning the scheduling of a hoagie sale and a pizza sale Senior Claw advisers are William Chtlcote and Melinda Stevens both adviser are searching for money - makers that are both quick and easy Offer Advice Melody Komir and Cheryl Hummel, yearbook ad- Sports âSportsmanship requires the effort of the individual plus the teamâ ÂŁ? ⢠S ritrltyding-Zy Jr. u; - syni sports n Cantids, ' 72.7j .... 74-71- p- 76.77 âP-7 -7s .. Advisor, Vicky Shaw 79 Formal Day Look-Alike Day UNRM Proud to be a Cardinal! SPIRIT WEEK 1984 The third annual Spirit Week was held this year at Korbes Road. Each year, the cheer- leaders set aside a week for the sole purpose of boosting school spirit. Classes compete with one another in three main categories: (I) the decorating of their class hall, (2) participation in daily dress-up days, and (3) spirit displayed at the Pep Rally. A separate hall is assigned to each grade to decorate with displays of spirit. The decora- tions support the boys' basketball team as well as the ego of the class. Each day is designated as a particular dress- up day. Students of all grades seemed to par- ticipate more than ever this year. The highlight of the w eekâs events is the Pep Rally held on Friday afternoon. Classes arc given one last chance to show their spirit to the judge, Mr. Hcroux. He announces the winner and runner up of each category and then the overall most spirited class . This year, the title went to the Class Of 1984!!! The enthusiasm did not stop there. That evening, the mighty Cardinals took on our lo- cal rival McConncllsburg. The basketball players were psyched and the fans were row- dier than ever! The weekâs activities proved to be a success as we defeated the Spartans 66- 56. All in all. Spirit Week 1984 was a time for fun and a time for us to show off that everlast- ing Cardinal Pride! 81 Boysâ Basketball Baseball 82 Junior High Sports Teams of the Future Girlsâ Basketball Jr. High girls basketball consists of two teams, a seventh grade and eighth grade. Both teams contain my students who show initiative, are willing to give their time for their school and are consistent in achieving success at this sport. The eighth grade end- ed their season with an 11-3 record. The seventh grade finished their season with an 11-1 record. Both teams offered an abun- dance of talent for successful years in the future at FRHS. â Coach Carol Parsons The 1983-84 Jr. High basketball teams had a very successful season with an overall re- cord of 21 wins against only 5 losses. The five losses were by an average of only 3 points. Mr. Sprowl and Mr. Ritchey would like to thank all who made this a fine sea- son, especially the team members whom they felt had one of the best attitudes of any of the teams they have ever coached. The Junior High baseball team had a short, but successful season. They finished the season with 3 wins, 1 loss, and one tie. Coach Randy Gelvin said the players have good attitudes toward baseball and he is looking forward to a promising season next year. 83 More than 20% of the entire District stu- dent body participated in the annual Forbes Road gym show held last week in the high school gym. Approximately 120 students performed or supported this popular event. Judging from the size of the crowd, the rest of the Forbes Road community served as spectators. The sixth grade started the gala event with a parachute routine to the music âBe- lieve It or Not. Eighth grader Missi Hall, fifth grader Shelly Parsons and seventh grader Amy Barber performed solo floor exercise routines. A unique Big-Little Girl Partner Routine on the mats was per- formed by Kara O'Neil. B.J. Souders, Cortney Cutchall, Mary Thanos, Kim Ranck and Stacey Black. Done to the popu- lar song âManiac , this particular event was very well-received by the overflow crowd. The fifth grade class showed off its abili- ties with an exciting pyramid demonstra- tion, and sixth graders danced a spirited square dance to the hit from Alabama, Dixieland Delight.â Stacey Henry, Michele Fester, Kara O'Neil, B.J. Souders and Shelly Parsons quieted the crowd with difficult uneven bar routines, as did Todd Strait and Jesse Yab- lonski on the even parallels. High school girls Missi Hall, Aimee Hann. B.J. Souders and Mary Thanos did a jazz dance to âThriller,â choreographed by Missi. Junior Robin Hann danced to âPuttin on the Ritz,â and Aimee Hann and B.J. Souders performed a dual floor exercise choreo- graphed by Aimee, to âFlashdancc.â A group floor exhibition featured Crissi Stains, Nicole Sprowl, Lisa Mellott, Mi- chele Fester and Michele Hann. Intricate balance beam routines hushed the audience as it watched Crissi Stains, Kara O'Neil. Shelly Parsons, Mary Thanos and Missi Hall perform. The fifth grade followed with an upbeat demonstration of a warmup rou- tine, and a number of students participated in vaulting and mini-tramp exhibitions. Howard Mellott. performed a difficult side horse routine and Amy Barber, Missi Hall, Shelly Parsons, Mary Thanos and B.J. Souders concluded the program with the popular âCan You Do This?â routine. It was a sad and glad time when we had to say fare- well to our old friends and we looked ahead to making new friends. It is leaving behind our well traveled ways and setting out on new un- explored paths. It is our end and our begin- ning. LASTING TRIBUTE This is our 35th edition of the Cardinal. We, along with our advisors and the staff, have spent endless hours compiling the reflections of our life at Forbes in 1984. We strived to capture the lasting moments of our school through the memories that were special to us. We feel very proud to have been a part of making this yearbook a momento of our high school years that will always be a lasting tribute. As we thought of new- ideas, we began to realize the amount of work and organization needed to create a successful yearbook. Everything we saw seemed to be related to yearbook! Through- out the school year, all of our free time was devoted to designing a different layout, thinking of a headline that captured attention, and writing unique write-ups. The number of decisions we faced seemed never ending. We would like to express a special thanks to our advisors, Mrs. K and Mrs. Hummel. Mrs. K â for your creative w rite-ups that always expressed our inner feelings regardless of the amount of time we gave you to w rite them. Mrs. Hummel â for the countless number of typcshcets you typed, your careful proofreading, and your efficient organization! To both of you â Thank you for your time, patience, support, advice, and encouragement. We would like to wish our classmates all the good luck and happiness this world has to offer. May all your dreams come true.
