We reier to the school as common because it belongs to us all. It is our- selves Working together to meet a universal need. But it is a most uncommon institution. It is relatively new. It is democracy's greatest gift to civilization. Throughout the World, among up- ward struggling peoples, Wherever parents share in the aspirations ot their children, the Ameri- can common school is being copied.
