As expected, the boys varsity basketball team dominated the SYL with a 13-1 record, the lone loss going to Bakersfield High, our SYL co- champs. The Trojans' success was due in part to the time and effort given by coach Dan Shannon and assistant coach David Reese. Shannon deserved- ly won the basketball Coach of the Year award. Key players for the championship team were: All-League and All-Area Most Valuable Player Ar- thur Charles, McDonald's All-American and first team All-Leaguer Archie Wright, first team All-Lea- guer and Southern Section play-off Most Valuable Player Reggie Phillips, and first team All-Leaguer Donte Glinton. Highlights from the '88 season included key play-off wins against Oceanside-El Camino 168-66 in double-overtimej, La Palma-Kennedy 171-64j and San Diego-Madison 162-60j. The win over Madison earned FHS the title of Division ll South- ern California Regional Champs, and enabled the Trojans to play for the State Title in Oakland. By beating Menlo-Atherton by a score of 66-61, the Trojans claimed the 1988 Di- vision ll State Basketball Championship title.
