I' Runners moke historu Winning the SYL championship and ending their season with a dual meet record of 6-1, the boys varsity cross country team added two con- secutive championships to FHS histo- r . y According to coach Ted Oliver, key runners were seniors Chris Coyle, Richard Herrera, Paul Contreras, ju- nior Enrique Saenz, and sophomore John Cartier. Senior leadership was an impor- tant factor in team success. Everyone had a positive atti- tude, said Herrera. Before we raced, we talked about winning. lt all paid off when the squad won the SYL meet, giving Foothill the league championship. Capturing the Division I Area championship enabled the varsity squad to advance to the Valley Finals, where they placed 6th. Special award winners were Most Valuable Enrique Saenz, Most Inspira- tional Paul Contreras, Coaches Award Richard Herrera, Most Improved Chris Coyle and John Cartier. Special recog- nition was given to Richard Herrera and Paul Contreras for joining the All- Time Top Seven varsity runners in Foothill history. Colvillo, Dovis Nomed Qutstonding Foshlsoph football had an impressive attitude with good team morale, according to coach Kevin Harriger. With a record of 4 wins and 6 losses, Harriger felt that Foothill discovered some successful, new talent. Out- standing players were all freshmen, with the exception of sophomore Robert Calvillo, who received the award for Best Defense. The rest of the awards go to Konala Davis, Most Valuable, as a fullback and linebacker. Jason Varrey re- ceived Most Outstanding Offense and William Dufford was Most Improved Player. The team's strengths were its consistent balance and ability to run and throw the ball on offense. Despite the lack of speed, according to coach Harriger, the team made up for it by its teamwork on offense. Frosh!Soph Football 99
