STRIKE - The teachers of the Amador Valley and the Pleasant School District went on strike during the months of October and November, l986. This was the first strike in the history of the school districts. At the bargaining table, the teachers were asking for an increase in salary. The district made a counter offer which was not ac- cepted by the teachers. On October eighth, the teachers went out for the first time. Eighty-three percent of the High School teachers and seventye four percent of the Elementary School teachers walked the picket lines in front of' district schools and the District Office. The following day the teachers returned to the classroom, The second strike day was October twentieth. Many of the students left school after their first two periods. Beginning November third, the teachers went on strike through November fourteenth. Striking ac- tivities included picketing the schools, letter writing cornpaigns, district-parent meetings and Jamestown, a tent city at the District Offices. Through negocations between the teachers, the district and parents, the team arrived at a contract and the strike ended.
