The early morning air is cool and crisp, satuated with a calm just waiting to be shattered by honking horns, reving engines, and mobs of rambunc- tious kids. A lone student, walking casually' across the quad, hands in pockets, backpack slung across her shoulder, looks up quickly as a locker slams in the distance, then resumes her trek towards some unknown destination. In the IMC, two boys talk earnestly by the water fountain as another sits against the wall, books and papers spread around him, pencil in hand, an anxious look on face as he looks up at the clock, 7:20 it reads. He turns back to his work. Across from him a girl and boy sit with arms around each other, talking quietly, and smiling often at secret jokes secure in their ephemeral peace before school. Responsibilities When we were young our jobs were, clean our plates and get dressed by ourselves. Maybe we had to clean our room and feed the goldfish occa- sionally, but little did we know what was following. As we progressed, jobs soon took on other meanings. We had to start looking for them. Now the neighbors lawns, babysit our little brothers and sisters, some 'of us even had to venture out on our own and get a newspaper route. All of this hard work just for our weekly entertainment ofa movie, and if we were lucky, a bucket of popcorn. Now jobs mean work and we have them for one purpose- money. Money doesn't grow on trees and neither do our cars, or our clothing, or our late night fun. We have our values, know what we want, know what we need and know what we can't have, They're all very different things, yet until our day of fame and fortune we're stuck. As we progressed we gradually learned what jobs were, probably not thinking one day our daily bread, goldfish, food or morning paper would reflect upon our job. n. Hmm-mr It usually sits off to the side of the room, but sometimes it's on the side of the teachers desk. Most rooms have the basic brown rectangular style ones, and sometimes you see a green one. The round ones are really hot items, doubling as basketball hoops a majority of the time. Even though they're always there we don't pay that much attention to them. You never really appreciate them, until you need to get rid ofa sticky piece of gum or a half used cheat note. They might not seem like very important items, but garbage cans are. Can you imagine life without one? We would have nowhere to throw lifes mistakes and that could pile up. What is it?
