The Fontana Steelers and the Pomona Red Devils fought to a 7-7 tie in the Steeler Stadium. The Red Devils were slightly favored over Fohi, but the game turned out to be amazingly even matched. Fontana scored first in the second quarter when Byron Bean intercepted a blocked pass on the Pomona 40. Two plays later a pass from Jerry Shearer to Joe Waleszonia put the ball on the 9. From there Jerry Peter- son carried in for the score. Peterson then added the extra point. At half-time the score stood at 7-O in favor of the hometown eleven. The Red Devils took the kick-off, opening the second half, and went 47 yards in five plays. This tightened the score and seconds later the pig- skin flew between the uprights to even the score at 7-7. Pomona dominated the rest of the third and fourth quarters until the last three minutes when the Steelers twice seemed surely to have wrapped up the game only to be stopped by an interception and the clock. Steeler standouts on defense were Byron Bean, Rich Downing, Mike Brown and Leo Jones. The offensive game was led by Jerry Shearer, Joe Wales- zonia, Jerry Peterson, and Bill Pell. FOHI 7 Pomona 7 Rich Downing C741 brings down Pomona back as Joe Wales- zonia fi61assists. In pursuit are Bill Pell Q251, Byron Bean Q771, Rudy Aldama 1851, Jerry Peterson f231, and Jerry Shearer 071. FOHI 0 Mater Dei Z5 Jerry Shearer U71 applies a crushing tackle as Dennis Barnett f221 gives assistance. Rudy Aldama 1851 is the other pictured Steeler. til- W fJ:fW V i,,A,a 1giis Q' ' ,LL A, The highly rated monarchs of Mater Dei over powered the Fohi gridders, 27-0. The Monarchs came to Steeler Stadium hoping for another easy victory but was sur- prised by the Steelers all-out effort. The first quarter was literally played on even terms with neither team able to move offensively. As the first half came to a close, the score of this hard-fought game stood at 7-0 Mater Dei. The second half was all Mater Dei as they scored once in the third and twice in the final stanza . The offensive game of Fohi was highlighted by Joe Waleszonia's 40 yard kick-off return and 20 yard romp by Jerry Shearer. The Steeler effort defensively was led by Jerry Shearer, John Duby, Byron Bean, and Rich Downing. 173

FOHI I5 Victor Valley Joe Waleszonia U61 breaks away from a would-be tackler as Rich Downing delivers a block. Fohi came from a 3-0 deficit at half-time to defeat the Victor Valley Jackrabbits, I5-3, behind the strong running of halfback Joe Waleszonia. Waleszonia scored on runs of 38 and 9 yards. Bill Pell was also a standout on offense as was Jerry Peterson who consistently picked up important yardage. Peterson added the only extra point. Leading the offensive line was Richard Downing as he threw key blocks that sprung Waleszonia on his TD romps. Fohi's defense put on a strong second half surge that halted the Jackrabbits offensive game. Glen Cochrane tackled the Victor Valley quarterback in the end zone for a safety and Fohi's finale points of the evening. Fontana's ball control and its l00fXs team effort was the key to vic- tory. Joe Waleszonia scored both of Fohi's first half TD's on passes from Jerry Shearer. Halfback Bill Pell added the final two touchdowns on fourth quarter romps of ll and 4 yds. Alto- gether Pell accumulated lOO yds. rushing. The Steeler secondary composed of Shearer, Waleszonia, Pell, and Dennis Barnett con- tained the Spartan pass catchers as they were unable to complete a pass. Pell led this group of defensive backs with two key interceptions. For the 9 returning lettermen on this years squad, this was a game of revenge.
