THE CRUCIBLE AUTH ER MILLER ln dramatizing the Salem witch hunts at the end of the seventeenth cen- tury, Miller explores the roots of in- tolerance and mass hysteria. A few girls, fettered by a rigid Puritan moral code, seek an outlet in secret dances at night in the woods. Dis- covered, they manage to elude pun- ishment by declaring themselves victims of the Devil and by ecstat- ically accusing several harmless women of witchcraft. The whole community is caught in a frenzy. Envy, greed, and superstition rule. The devil's supposed hu- man assistants are blamed for every mishap, be it the miscarriage of a woman or the death of a pig. Deputy- Governor Danforth, a monster of dogmatism, meticu- lously executes the verdict of mob madness. The central plot concerns John Proctor, a forthright farmer, his wife Elizabeth, and Abigail, the ringleader of the girls. Abigail had once seduced Proctor and now tries to eliminate Elizabeth by declaring her a witch. At- tempting to clear his wife, Proctor implicates himself. He refuses to save his neck with a false confession and is led to the gallows. Though the characters some- times seem to lack human substance, they are effec- tively profiled and clash in grippingly dramatic scenes. ln his concern for historical accuracy and a universal comment, Miller does not emphasize contemporary parallels. 6487 Betty Parris. . . . . . . . . . DANCING LOUISE RUFFIANS ..... CAPTAIN ..... HEAVENLY FRIEND STARKEEPER .... LOUISE ...... PRINCIPAL .... DOCTOR SELDON Carousel unfolds a strange and beautiful love story, told in unforgettable songs from the hearts and pens of Rogers and Hammerstein . Lovers walk the rocky Maine shores, sailors sing of the sea, townsfolk gather for a gay clambake, and life and death are viewed from a typical New England heaven. The time is IB73---the place, a small town on the coast of Maine. Billy Bigelow, hand- some and proud barker for the carousel in the local amusement park, and Julie Jordan, a lovely young girl who works in a factory, fall in love and go off together, though it cost them both their iobs. When they return, married, they face a hostile town. In the difficult months that follow, Billy is unable to get work and Julie becomes pregnant. Finally it is June, time to get ready for the first clambake of the season. But Billy is desperate and bitter, and agrees to join his unsavory pal , Jigger, in a robbery. The robbery goes awry, and Billy, trying to escape, falls on his own knife and is killed. Fifteen years later Billy, looking down from heaven, sees that all is not well with his child, now an attractive but rejected young girl. He returns to earth for a day, makes himself visible to his daughter, and gives her a star. This star, together with BiIIy's father-ly advice, brings the girl new joy and assurance. Billy, satisfied that he has at last done something good for his child, returns to heaven . ENOCH SNOW, JR. Cast CARRIE PIPPERIDGE .......... Karen Hixson JULIE JORDAN ........... Janice Henson MRS.
