eetng things Biffcrmtln.. Folwell Junior High School Minneapolis, Minnesota In the past year we have seen Folwell in our o w n unique ways. We remember the good times as well as the bad. The closing of Nokomis was hard take at first, but after awhile everything turned out O.K. Now after one year there are just Folwell students. You might say that the “Nokomis” kids have added to Folwell’s Great Spirit! We are proud that Folwell has survived budget cutting, school closings, and declining enrollment. This year marks Folwell’s 49th anniversary. With all It’s great memories, Folwell has really improved since the good old days, which consisted of seven periods, and who knows how many teachers. But now they say Folwell is on It’s last lap before It reaches the big school in the sky. We all hope Folwell will stay forever, but with It’s declining enrollment and a tight budget, we never know what’s going to happen. cr_H00tBWS W. Arnold J. Bergren M. Brockel L. Butwin Y. Magnuson D. Melody Tykwinski, Peter The Teachers The Students Fohvell has a wide variety of teachers: a teacher of the year, a “wonderful” teacher, flexible teachers, creative teachers, hardworking teachers, and even “Mickey Mouse” teachers. The students are: serious, hardworking fun-loving, outgoing, involved and ALWAYS hungry! Put the two together and you get some great programs that make for a great memorable year! and The Programs 48 Mrs. Doepke has been a choir teacher for many years, so it was quite a challenge for her to teach band this year. She didn’t want to leave Folwcll, so she was willing to teach band. Previous years, Mr. Koppelman was Folwell’s band teacher, but due to lay-offs and some switching around, he is now teaching band at Sanford. It was nice to see Mr. Koppelman again when he conducted Folwell in a mass band number at the Roosevelt Band Concert. Mr. Harrington was the choir teacher at Nokomis Jr. High before it closed. He was at Sanford one year before coming to Folwell. He says Folwell is a great school, but he still misses Nokomis. 49 51 Folwell students always look forward to Ski Club. It was started 10 years ago by Mr. Costello, the Liaison Officer, who is now at Roosevelt. Every year, about 90 students experience the thrill of skiing down the powdery hills. This years chances of skiing started out pretty slim, but thanks to Mother Nature, and the snow making machines, we finally had several trips. This year we were able to receive money from the school-board to start a girls’ basketball team. So many girls turned out that we had enough for 2 teams, when most other school couldn’t even get one. In fact, we had to drop our 9th grade team because no other schools had one. The team was coached by Mr. Bergren and Mrs. Supinela and did well with a 3 win — 4 loss season. We hope next year will be even more successful. 55 ...about what you want to be???? Intern is a great chance to check-out a job, and see how the work is done and job conditions, and see what the people are like. — Paul Clarkson I think the program gives us a better chance to go out and see how people really have to work for a living. We also get to meet all the different kinds of people. It’s also good to get away from the school desk too. — Todd Larson It’s a chance to get to know many new people, and a chance to show how responsible you can be. You show yourself how much you can accomplish and what you can do. When you get to know the people you work with, they will take time to help you understand. — LeeAnn Gossman is the answer!!!! 58 ©ssasaaMnnr 60 In community Studies we learned how to become historians. Our prime goal was to uncover the history of the Folwell community. There are no textbooks on that subject, so we learned by doing. We used the historian’s methods: make hypotheses, gather data, quantify, and share information. We used the historia’s resources: museums, cemeteries, census records, journals, and first hand accounts. Interviewing senior citizens in this neighhorhood was rather frightening at first, but we met some fascinating people who told us about bobsledding at Powderhorn, swimming at Lake Amelia, and sliding down Zero Hill. Outstanding in our minds were the lessons studied “on location at Stillwater, St. Anthony Falls, and Fort Snelling. Through all these unique experiences, we not only learned about our community; we also learned about ourselves. 61 it 62 'crrruunx . Al. ------ TRY OUTS The Boy 67 n October 29th to November 2nd was yearbook week. That week presented the opportunity to buy a yearbook and a chance to show off your school spirit. Day after day of activities included: button sales, hat day, ka Halloween day, camera day, and even ribbon day. [Phe week was hectic, but it proved that there’s a little school spirit in everybody. F O L-WE’LL This year the yearbook staff decided to make the yearbook individual by adding student art to it’s pages. Here are the results. We finish off the school year through Autumn leaves and snow, Watered eyes and sad good-byes, I hate to see the good times go. The summer passes quickly, and so soon we start again, with the sniffing nose and happy hellos, we’re back together again. Lee Ann Gossman WE HOPE THERE IS A FUTURE FOLWELL TO COME BACK TO, WITH THE SAME GREAT STUDENT SPIRIT AND THE SAME GREAT “PRINSABLE”. 71 are tlje I 1,97.9
