QQIIJWWM7 .... HE Destroyer Escort U. S. S. Fogg was named for Lieutenant Carlton Thayer F029 AVKGD, USNR, who died a hero's death in the early part of the war while Hying a Torpedo Bomber from the deck of his ship, the U. S. S. Enterprise, in the attack on the Marcus Islands. The U. S. S. Fogg was commissioned at Hingharn, Massachusetts, on July 7, 1945, and Lieutenant- Commander Charles F. Adams, USNR, assumed ssmmaad. srass then the ship has been commanded by Lieutenant-Cernrnander Frederiek H. Martin, USNR: Lieutenant-Cernrnander E. R. Parker, USNR, and at present by Lieutenant Edwin R. Lozier, USNR. Since censorship regulations have been modified it is now permissible to say that this type Destroyer was one of those especially designed and trained to fight submarines. In this assigned duty the ship has travelled about 150,000 miles and has become known in naval circles as the Fighting Foggf' On December 20, 1944, the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine about 400 miles west of Gibraltar. In this action ,fifteen members of the ship's crew lost their lives. The next few days witnessed a running battle between the wounded ship and the heavy seas. After temporary refuge in the Azore Islands, the ship finally arrived at the Boston Navy Yard on March 8, 1945, to be rebuilt, to be fought again by the same plucky crew that brought her back. , ' ' -LLWL,.M4gf . ., QM, -- A .L ,.. , s - . a' -. ar-.aa . - a A,-,. .-as '. .-.m,..s......a-7 .sfa..-anis...-..-,,'..,.., W I ' .-QM, grl, A , Q. :.,,,,4,,,,,:,LL,,LM 1 .a..a....,a-.a ..s..h we 1z...zr, a -Nr ras-w Zn Memoriam .....
