t r % « - THIS IS THE 1960 Qua fra Jjm PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF 2 Volume VII FRED T. FOARD HIGH SCHOOI______Newton, North Carolina 3 I960 Here in the pages of this annual the staff has tried to record some of the school happenings in nineteen hundred and sixty. Here are memories, pictorial and printed, depicting the characteristics of life at Fred T. Foard, socially and intellectually. We, The Quatra- Log Staff, hope we have helped to preserve those unforgettable memories, and that this book will serve as a rich treasure in the years to come. % These 'Pages (Attempt CONTENTS FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS FEATURES ADVERTISING The library provides many sources of information for Latin students, Carolyn R. and Texie W. Mrs.Reitzel helps them prepare a difficult Latin assignment. Varied Curriculum mdldJed 'Rounded This year Foard offers to its students a broader and more versatile curriculum than ever before. Special emphasis has been placed on science, mathematics, and the languages; in addition, social competence and im- proved human relations have been stressed by the social studies de- partment. This modernization pro- gram enables the students to become better prepared citizens for well- rounded life in the coming space age. Pducafirmi 'Pmram Reid P. builds a Zan de Graaf gen- erator as his science project. He hopes to enter this project in the State Science Fair. UMk Gdlot 'Partitipatton Darnell B., a member of the FHA, demonstrates the correct method of sewing. Glenn J., under the careful supervision of Mr. Shugart, learns to use one of the many devices of the agricultural workshop. Gene W.uses the burettes in his chemistry experiment. This is one of the experi- ments which chemistry students are re- quired to participate in. The Latin Club members reverently enter the Catholic Church at Belmont Abbey to attend Mass. In its second year of playing, the football team ended its season winning one and losing eight gridiron contests. Although losing most of the games, the team showed improvement over the previous year. Their only victory was over Rock Springs with the score 28-12. This game, which provedvery exciting, was Foard's home- coming game. Coaches Peeler and Honeycutt expect a fine team next year, as most of the team will be back. With more experience next year the team will definitely make a better showing. Get that rebound! Strike one? Wanda S. finds her hours of practice were not in vain as she blocks two more points. The Foard Tigers, coached by Make D. Honeycutt, were up and down most of the season and were better than their record indicated. However, great teamwork was noticed during this basketball season. Since the team lost some of last years' players, this year the Tigers had more training to do. The Tigerettes, coached by Hugh Peeler, had the first taste of winning this year, as the team showed a great record. A decisive improvement was shown over last year's team. At the half of the basketball season the Tigerettes were tied for first place with Maiden with a record of 5-1 in the conference games. The Tigerettes ranked top in non-conference games with a record of 6-2. Coupled With Mi Harvest Carnival- K j ✓ , ,. Foard High School, when we were green freshmen. After several tries we found our right class. In our sophomore year, we found ourselves taking field trips and disecting frogs. When we became juniors, we were feeling more important. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was a very big experience to plan and put together ideas for ourselves. In our senior year many headaches and even gray hairs were very common. Senior English Class, which prepared us for college proved very beneficial. Although at times we felt like giving up, we struggled on. In the end, we realized it was all very profitable. With high school almost over, April 24 finally arrived-the date long awaited for-at last, off to Washington and New York! For twelve years we had waited; then it finally came, our senior trip- perhaps the most mem- orable occasion in school, one we will remember far in the future. With twelve years full of joy and sorrow now gone, we look into the future-a world unknown. Some will further their education by attending various colleges. Others will begin to realize their childhood ambitions. However, after twelve years of hard work, memorable experiences, and joyful occasions, each of us will enter a new and difficult world of success or failure. Mascofs Joy Elaine Mull, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Odell Mull of the Mountain View section, and Tony Edward Dickinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dickinson, also of the Mountain View section, were chosen by the seniors as their mascots. Joy and Tony will participate in the senior graduation exercises in June. ■ Left to right: Heidy Fletcher Reporter Neoma Young Reporter Sibyle Abernethy Treasurer Elizabeth Jones Secretary Wanda Scronce President CMay Buff Vice-President 1 Advisers e Seated: Mrs. Kathleen Isenhour, Mrs. Dessie P.
