CLASS PROPHECY “We Dipped Into the Future, Far as Human Eye Could See” (With an Apology to the Poets) Having realized the prophetic powers granted Jo Doris and me, the seniors asked us to look into the seeds of Time to say which grain would grow and which would not. But we two would fain turn the pages of “The Graduates’ Book” slowly, lest there be recorded much to regret. Timidly we opened the treasured volume kept by Father Time and turned to the chapter bearing this heading: “A Record of the 1954 Graduates of Fred T. Foard High School.” Hesitating no longer, we dared read. Seniors, proudly do we reveal your future record. Step quickly across the pages of time to the year 1964. Troy, John Wallace, Bobby, Howard, Derrell, and Frank - once the most care- free of youths; now, distinguished educators - view your progress. Alluring young minds to nobler worlds and leading the way! Ah, Jean, Doris Coulter, Mary Jane,Betty Jean, and Beatrice - Angels with the Lamps - feeling another’s woe. Think of it. Suffering relieved through your minis- try of mercy. Ah, Memory, play an old tune on our hearts, for here we read of lasting fame for musical Naomi, Ann, Sylvia, and Joanne. Guy, Ralph Cook, Farrell, Lewis, Larry, and Eddie - in the service of your country - going where glory awaits you. Glory is your prize; honor is your wealth. Say, Richard, Leonard, and Weston - ministers of God. Well are you fighting the better fight. And Ruby Jo, Emogene, Margaret Sigmon, Shirley Dare, and Peggy Ann - in your chosen secretarial work. Delight in your careers. Laboring hands bless a waiting world. Ah, here’s a list. Nancy, Shirley Sue, Nadine, Juanita, and Benelia - School- marms all. A few limbs of birch and a few plain rules! Well, there’s no gather- ing the rose without being pricked by the thorns. Behold Jerry and Gene, with timely care, dispensing balm of Gilead. Remem- ber that physicians, of all men, are most happy; upon their sacrifices the gods themselves throw incense. And Maxine, Betty Jane, Margaret Mull, Maynell, Alice, Evelyn, and Jackie - housewives proud. Tend your little ones with loving care, for of such is the kingdom of heaven! Ah, Scottie Sue, Helen and Billie Faye - ladies of fashion and models fine. No beauty is like the beauty of the mind. Well, Betty Dean, Doris McRee, and Sue - Champions fair. How many medals and trophies rare! Ah, Johnny and Ralph - seekers of distant happiness - Hollywood is granting you lasting fame. Jack, Ray, Alfred, and Sammy - tillers of the soil - thriving citizens of a thriv- ing state! Betty Jo, F ranees , Shirley Dickinson, and Peggy Jean - caretakers of the female crown of glory. You are much sought after. There, now, Ercel. As no man is born an artist; so no man is born an angler. Your fishing has improved; your paintings have endured. Well, Danny, you and Howard Weaver are truckers rare, being endowed with wisdom to guard your tempers and tongues in the battle with pedestrianism. That’s all, classmates. We've reached the end of the chapter. You see, you aren’t escaping the normal, feverish state of human beings, but you are enjoying the secret applause of duties well done. Jo Doris Lail Charles Rhoney Prophets
