musical education and Fm not con- cerned about all the diversified types of music of which I know nothing, I'm content just sitting here singing, or whistling in the wind, or banging on my shield whenever I feel musically inclined. I'm perfectly happy with the one song I remember, even though I can't understand a word of it anymore: Sumer is icumen in, Lhude sing cuccug Groweth sed And bloweth med, And springeth the wode nu. Yes, yesf Harold interrupted hastily. That was considered enough in our day, when the only musical entertainment was supplied by the King's musicians, an occasional band of troubadours, or a few wandering minstrels. Now, in the Kingdom, music is taught so that the serfs may become familiar with the masterworks which have contributed to the great diversification in the world of music. This beginning in musical com- prehension prompts ambitious villeins to strike out on their ownf' You mean they will sit in front of their radios all day 'appreciating' mu- sic? queried Bertram. Imagine how flabby they will soon become. Egad! If they study too diligently they will pre- sently become mere physical nothings, thoroughly unfit for the adventures facing them. And you call them well- rounded! 5 g MUSIC DEPARTMENT Seated, L. to R.: Mrs. Piedra, Chairmang Miss Miller, Standing, L. to R.: Mr. Stamm, Mr. Orshan. fu ii t a lffi igsfm f 1-ia elif? ,' Q g 2f?i'7fi5' ' -fg, . You dont seem to realize that the mentors are pre- paring their proteges to adapt to changes taking place in the world far different from any we have known. The tourna- ment of life is changing, and knowledge of the arts is a formidable weapon when one is challenged by boredom. Can you believe that these serfs may work but thirty hours a week, while enjoying high incomes and three-day weekends for their toil? They must be shown how to spend their leisure time usefully. Of course you must know that appreciation of the fine arts is not innate and must be instilledf, There! You have just proven my point, Harold. A thirty-hour week! Courses in art! Pshaw! What kind of knights will these be? Marry, Bertram, no one unites his time in the study of artg he enriches his life instead. And that applies to music as well. Music also plays a large part in entertaining man during his leisure hours. No longer is the enjoyment of music restricted to the elite. Wfhy, by a mere twist of 21 dial any one can have his choice: classical, modern, jazz, or 'rock and roll'. However, the serfs must be taught to understand the music they will be listening to before they can begin to appreciate it. Thats not true! I never had a

WWW BOYS' HEALTH ED. DEPT.-L. to R..' Mr. Mullin, Scaling gymnastic heights Clmirman: Mr. Montalbano, Mr. Di Chiari, Mr. Jensen, Mr. Levitz, Mr. Berg, Mr. Larsen, Mr. Harras C-radzooks! You certainly are unobservant, Bertram. How could you believe they had forgotten about health education? Every serf is required to take an active part in the Kingdoms program to develop the subjects in body as well as in mind. This curriculum includes basketball, volleyball, and other games and varied gymnastic skills. The most proficient and outstanding athletes and leaders are awarded with medals for their deeds. And we can't overlook the fact that the maidens of the court also take part in the physical education programs. They have even exhibited their talents in public performances of contemporary dancing. Damsels trained as athletes? Phooey! exclaimed Bertram derisively. This is all part of the modern educational program. Every serf is educated so that he or she will develop both wisdom and fortitude. I get exhausted just thinking of all the work each serf has to do, sighed Harold, thinking that he had finally proven his point: that the serfs have many more opportunities than they, the gargoyles, ever enjoyed. His smug grin faded when Bertram said: Forsooth, Harold, your arguments have merely shown how the serfs' formal studies prepare them for the future. A true education includes much more than this. You have completely neglected the activities that are available to the whole popula- tion of the empire! I could tell you a thing or two about them!
