Neo-Newton For the first time in centuries I agree with you, Bertram. When we talk of 'ease and understanding' we can't ignore the contributions of mathematics and science. Though the alchemists of old never succeeded in changing lead into gold, today's mathe- matical and scientific achievements exceed this marvel a hundredfoldf' Alack, Harold, what are you talking about? Look there, inside the castle! Those serfs seem to be amusing themselves drawing figures and for- mulas on the blackboard. It looks like fun, I think I'll try to solve a problem. I agree that solving problems may be fun, Bertram, but in sooth you're ignoring the fact that WT mathematics occupies a role of increasing impor- tance in this complex world. While the students in the Advanced Math class you're watching are en- - joying the study of this fascinating subject, they also realize the practicality and usefulness of the knowledge they are acquiring. With mathematics as a tool, bold new concepts have been developed and we are closer than ever to fathoming the mysteries of the universe. Haven't you noticed the satellites zooming close overhead lately? Don't you know what made them possible? Mathematics? asked a puzzled Bertram. Certainly, mathematics. Everything about us can be explained by delving into the realms of . . . I smell stone burning! . . . I think you'd better put that problem aside, you just weren't cut out to be a mathematician. 'Tve always had a fancy for wizardryf' Peace, stout Bertram. You wrong scientists-no longer are they sorcerers like Merlin, they employ the scientific method instead of relying solely on chance in their attempts to make lasting contributions to mankind. They look toward the future, when this courtls young scientists, now in their apprentice stage, will have completed their period of initial learning and discovery and will join those who, right now, are working for a better world. Science loses none of the intrigue of necromancy, but manages to remove the element of trial and error. Egad, Harold. Speaking of error, haven't you ever watched the science scholars in their laboratories? Prithee tell, do they ever perform experiments correctly? Don't form hasty judgments, Bertram. No one said that science was perfect. The workings of science are governed by man and man is not perfect. The worth of experimentation lies not only in achieving the expected results, but in analyzing causes of error, or fallacies in one's hypotheses, if experiments fail to work correctly. Science is another subject which teaches the serf to think. Verily, I doubt that this is your calling in life either.
