Neo-Newton For the first time in centuries I agree with you, Bertram. When we talk of 'ease and understanding' we can't ignore the contributions of mathematics and science. Though the alchemists of old never succeeded in changing lead into gold, today's mathe- matical and scientific achievements exceed this marvel a hundredfoldf' Alack, Harold, what are you talking about? Look there, inside the castle! Those serfs seem to be amusing themselves drawing figures and for- mulas on the blackboard. It looks like fun, I think I'll try to solve a problem. I agree that solving problems may be fun, Bertram, but in sooth you're ignoring the fact that WT mathematics occupies a role of increasing impor- tance in this complex world. While the students in the Advanced Math class you're watching are en- - joying the study of this fascinating subject, they also realize the practicality and usefulness of the knowledge they are acquiring. With mathematics as a tool, bold new concepts have been developed and we are closer than ever to fathoming the mysteries of the universe. Haven't you noticed the satellites zooming close overhead lately? Don't you know what made them possible? Mathematics? asked a puzzled Bertram. Certainly, mathematics. Everything about us can be explained by delving into the realms of . . . I smell stone burning! . . . I think you'd better put that problem aside, you just weren't cut out to be a mathematician. Sensible reasoning! Fie! Where do you see any logic in teaching the serfs alien tongues? English is good enough for them! It's the only language we know! Didn't we feel elated speaking the new vernacular while the others swiveled scornfully on their Latin-inscribed pedestals! We completely neglected ancient Latin, and didn't concern our- selves with reading and learning other languages, or even speaking to gargoyles from foreign coun- tries. In sooth, Bertram, I don't wish to excuse our F ignorance, but bear in mind that we didn't even A know there was an American language until we came here. We are not like these modern young- sters who want and need to know about other M' people in other lands. They study different lan- guages and cultures to learn the true character of the people of these countries. Listen to the lan- guage classes! . . What for? I can't understand a word! Exactly! We venerable gargoyles can't, but these young serfs can. They learn to speak Gallic, Iberian, and Teutonic, and they haven't forsaken Latin. They read the great literary works written in these languages and become familiar with the countries from whence they came. Their study here will help them to enjoy future journeys to other lands and to become acquainted with all people with ease and understanding. How thou talkest, Harold! Language study can't be the only portal to ease and understandingf' LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Seated, L. to R.: Miss Rubinow, Miss Worms, Mrs. Lewin, Mrs. Thom, Mrs. Finnan, Mrs. Harrasg Standing, L. to R.: Mr. Robbins, Miss Cohen, Dr. Walker, Claairmanf Mr. Costaras, Miss Krepela, Mrs. Kallich, Miss Gonzalez.
